PROCESSIONAL HYMN: We Have a Gospel to Proclaim (tune LBW

356)

1 We have a gospel to proclaim, Good news for all throughout the earth; the Gospel of a Saviour’s name, We sing His glory, tell His worth.

2 Tell of His birth at Bethlehem, Not in a royal house or hall But in a stable dark and dim, The Word made flesh, a light for all.

3 Tell of His death at Calvary, Hated by those He came to save, In lonely suffering on the cross, for all He loved His life He gave.

4 Tell of that glorious Easter morn, Empty the tomb, for He was free. He broke the power of death and hell that we might share His victory.

5 Tell of His reign at God’s right hand, by all creation glorified, He sends His Spirit on His Church, to live for Him, the Lamb who died.

6 Now we rejoice to name Him King, Jesus is Lord of all the earth, this gospel message we proclaim, We sing His glory, tell His worth.

WELCOME

CONFESSION & ABSOLUTIONP: Trusting in the forgiveness of sins Christ has won by his death, and the new life promised by his resurrection, let us confess our sins in the desire to be forgiven and to live in righteousness.

We need your mercy and forgiveness to deliver us from sin, death and the devil. For the sake of Jesus’ suffering and death, forgive us; and by your Holy Spirit, lead us into all truth and righteousness. Amen

Silent reflection on our sinfulness and need of forgivenessP: Your heavenly Father looks upon you in mercy, and by the blood of his beloved Son, Jesus Christ, forgives you all your sins. Rise to live in newness of life.C: Amen; thanks be to God for his mercy and grace

HYMN: My Hope is Built on Nothing Less LBW #294

1 My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness; No merit of my own I claim, but wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

Refrain: On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand.

2 When darkness veils his lovely face, I rest on his unchanging grace; In ev’ry high and stormy gale My anchor holds within the veil. Refrain

3 His oath, his covenant, his blood Sustain me in the raging flood; When all supports are washed away, He then is all my hope and stay. Refrain

4 When he shall come with trumpet sound Oh, may I then in him be found, Clothed in his righteousness alone, Redeemed to stand before the throne. RefrainBe Seated1ST LESSON: Romans 10:5-17R: The 1st lesson is from Romans, the 10th chapter.

5 Moses writes about the righteousness that is based on the law, that the person who does the commandments shall live by them. 6 But the righteousness based on faith says, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 “or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your

Page 5: christusclintonville.orgchristusclintonville.org/Ordination Service.docx  · Web view2020. 7. 23. · 1 We have a gospel to proclaim, Good news for all throughout the earth; the

heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); 9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.R: The Word of the LordC: Thanks be to God

2ND LESSON: 1 Corinthians 3:10-13R: The 1st lesson is from 1st Corinthians, the 3rd chapter.

10 According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. 11 For no one can lay a foundation other

than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— 13 each one's work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done.R: The Word of the LordC: Thanks be to GodStandGOSPEL LESSON: Matthew 10:16-27P: The Holy Gospel, according to St. Matthew, the 10th chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord

16 “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. 17 Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to courts and flog you in their synagogues, 18 and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the Gentiles. 19 When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. 20 For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. 21 Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death, 22 and you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 23 When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

24 “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. 25 It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have

called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household.26 “So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. 27 What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops.P: The Gospel of our LordC: Praise to you, O ChristBe Seated

SERMONStandHYMN: O God, Send Heralds LBW #283 (tune 287)

1 O God, send heralds who will never falter, Who dare to walk where Christ has set his feet, Who know the Church as beacon and as altar where human need and your abundance meet.2 Not to be served, but only to be serving, To feed the hunger in the human heart, To know that love which comes without deserving, That love which only Jesus can impart.3 Empires have come, have flourished and departed, but still your Church, as witness to your way, Lives on in darkness, light of the true-hearted, and calls to action those whose feet would stay.4 Send heralds, then, in whom your heart rejoices; Send those who hear the call that sets us free, with eager hearts and jubilating voices Each making answer, “Here am I! Send me.”

NICENE CREEDP: Together with the saints of all times and places, we confess the one, true faith, using the words of the Nicene Creed.C: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father; God from God, Light from Light, True God from True God; begotten, not made; of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit, he became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake, he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again, in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit; the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen

Psalm 1391 O God, you search me and you know me; All my thoughts lie open to your gaze; When I walk or lie down, you are before me, Ever the maker and keeper of my days.

2 For you created me and shaped me; Gave me life within my mother’s womb; For the wonder of who I am, I praise you; Safe in your hands all creation is made new.

3 Although your Spirit is upon me, Still I search for shelter from your light; There is nowhere on earth I can escape you; Even the darkness is radiant in your sight.
