Adjusting Hook Timing

1. Remove the presser foot, needle plate and bobbin case.

To check the hook timing, push the needle bar all the way to the left. Rotate the handwheel towards you to bring the needle all the way down, then continue to rotate the handwheel until the tip of the hook is at the right side of the needle. At this position the tip of the hook should be 1.6 to 2.0 mm above the top of the eye of the needle.

2. To make the adjustment, place the machine on its back. Loosen the two 2.5 mm screws on the lower shaft gear. While holding the hook race, rotate the handwheel until the hook timing is correct. Then tighten the screws.

14

Page 16: Service Seminar Memory Craft 9700. Removing the Face Plate 1. Open the face plate. 2. Remove the 2 screws and remove the face plate. 1

Adjusting the Hook to Needle Clearance

1. Turn the handwheel to bring the hook point behind the needle. The clearance between the hook and the needle should be as close to zero as possible, without the hook hitting the needle as it passes behind the needle in both left and right needle positions.

2. If the hook is hitting the needle, or if the hook-to-needle clearance is too large, place the machine on its back. Loosen the 3 screws on the hook base plate. Move the hook base plate until the clearance is correct. Check the clearance in left, center and right needle position. Then tighten the screws. After making this adjustment, the hook gear backlash also must be checked.

15

Page 17: Service Seminar Memory Craft 9700. Removing the Face Plate 1. Open the face plate. 2. Remove the 2 screws and remove the face plate. 1

Adjusting the Hook Gear Backlash

1. Rotate the handwheel towards you until the hook point is below the legs of the feed dog. Hold the hook and move it left and right. At this position there should be .8 mm or less rotary movement,” backlash”, in the hook.

2. If the backlash is not correct, place the machine on its back. Loosen the 2.5 mm hexagon set screw. Place a small screwdriver in the slot of the lower shaft left bushing and rotate the bushing. If there is too much rotary play in the hook, move the slot DOWN. If there is too little rotary play in the hook, move the slot UP.( make sure not to move the bushing left or right)

Adjusting the Feed Dog Height

1. Install the needle plate and the presser foot. With the presser foot in the down position, turn the handwheel to bring the feed dog to its highest position. The feed dog should be .8 to .9 mm above the surface of the needle plate

2. There are two adjustments for feed dog height: front adjustment and rear adjustment. For the rear adjustment, loosen the set screw. Then loosen the lock nut(5.5mm) on the adjusting screw. Turn the adjusting screw clockwise to raise the feed dog and counterclockwise to lower the feed dog. Then tighten the set screw and the lock nut.

3. To make the front adjustment, locate the silver set screw. This has left-handed threads. Also locate the empty threaded screw hole.

Servicing the Base Unit

1. Place the base on the table. Remove the 4 screws and remove the base cover plate.

2. Lint or other debris stuck in the stepping motor gears could cause the base not to work properly.

To check the stepping motor A which control left to right carriage movement, locate and remove the 2 small brass screws. Gently lean the stepping motor on the side and observe the two gears. Make sure both gears are free from lint. While moving the carriage arm left to right, lubricate the shaft.

3. Return the carriage arm to the most far right position (home position) and place the motor back into position and insert the 2 screws. Make sure there is a slight backlash between the gears.

19

Page 21: Service Seminar Memory Craft 9700. Removing the Face Plate 1. Open the face plate. 2. Remove the 2 screws and remove the face plate. 1

4. To check the stepping motor B which controls the front to back carriage movement, locate and remove the 2 small brass screws. Gently lean the motor on the side and look for any lint between the gears. While moving the carriage unit front to back, lubricate the arm.

5. Locate the plastic leveling bracket and the 2 small screws. If the carriage arm has been hit or blocked while embroidering, chances are that the bracket has shifted and the arm is tilted. Push the arm back and then tighten the 2 screws.

6. Place the stepping motor back into position, make sure that the wires are not caught underneath the step motor. Insert and tighten the 2 screws. Make sure there is a slight backlash between the gears. When realigning this step motor into home position, push the arm and line the back of the carriage arm with the right hand side of the outer edge of the base.Important! The arm should not be pushed all the way in.
