Crashing Hoosiers Invade the StadiumBig Indiana Team Meets Minnesota Today/or First Clash

Since Far-off 1922MNNESOTA plays it s last homeconference game of the 'seasontoday against no less an opponentthan Pat Page's dashing teamfrom ' Indiana University.Neither is an unbeaten team, buton the other hand, neither is by anymeans a weak team, and the day's sport will give a

line on the relative merits of suchIndiana players as Bennett, Balay,Harrell, Reinhardt and Magnabosco and Minnesotans such asNagurski, Brockmeyer, Hovde,Kirk, Burdick and Pharmer. Both teams are captained inthe line, Indiana by Defensive Captain Mathew andMinnesota byGeorge Gibson,Bennett, a halfback, is Indiana's offensivecaptain. On occasion he canbe extremelyoffensive, whilerunning with the ball.

Indiana is PresidentL. D. Coffman's university, from which hewas graduated in 1905and received advanceddegrees in 191 0 and19 12, Z. G. Clevenger,Indiana's athletic director, was in college inPresident Coffman'stime, which is statedhere as a matter of interest, not that it willmake any difference inthe ' attitude of the twoelevens at kick-off time.

ing game to Iowa. Indiana, on theother hand, has won from Minnesota'sancient but enfeebled rival, Michigan.Today's game is the seventhbetween these two teams. In1906 ' Minnesota edgedout an 8 to 6 victoryover the Indiana players, winning also. in 1917, 1919,192 1 and 192 2,the most recentg am e beingMinnesota's bya score of 20 toO. But in 1920Indiana's great elevend ow n e d Minnesotahandily, 2 1 to 7.Notwithstanding it slosses to Illinoisand Ohio, In diana's 1 92 8football team isadmittedly oneof the strongestthat ever represented that institution. This

is Pat Page's third yearat the Hoosier university, and his system hasbegun to work. Hisline is heavy and J-.asthe fighting quality. Hisbackfield is both fastand heavy, with someoutstanding plungersand certain gentlemenvery agile at kicking.Today's game shouldbe one of the season'sbest, with nothing certain until curfew callsthe children from thefield of play,Illinois and Ohio

have beaten Scarletthis year. Minnesotahas lost a heart-break-

Above: Harrell, Indiana's notedback; below, Robert Mathew, defensive captain of Indiana.

Although no furtherconference games willbe played at , homt>.

GOING GOPHERSOV ER there at the side are four fastfootball players whom no one isparticularly eager to get rid of . Read-ing from top to bottom, their namesare Fred Hovd e, Kenneth Haycraft,C lay ton Gay and Clarence Arendsee.T hei r p ositions are quarterback, end,end and fullb ack , and all have doneMinnesota and themselves great creditby their p erformances during their play-ing years.

Hovde will long be remembered forhis 91 yard run to a touchdown againstIowa this fall, a performance that byal l rights should have won the ballgam e. It was small wonder afterplaying all afte rnoon and making thatrun in the last period that he was un-able to catch the fresh (both ways)Mr. Pape when that gentleman brokethrough the Minnesota line two playslater and went 63 yards of hi s own toscore a touchdown for Iowa.

Hovde became a regular only inhis senior year, not through any faultof his own, but because Barnhart, Ny-dahl, Almquist and Joesting hadworked together too long to be dis-turbed.

Ken Haycraft , coming from no far-ther away than Wayzata, has been oneof the best ends ever to play for Min-nesota . Relatively small, like Hovde,Haycraft is richly endowed with in -testinal fortitude, to which he has add-ed a highly developed skill. His playhas pulled many a ball game out ofthe fire for Minnesota, his specialtybeing the act of plucking long passesout of the air on the goal line, ornear it.

Clay ton Gay, basketball and foot-ball man, has done yeoman service in:nany games into which he has beensent while Haycraft or Tanner was tak-ing a rest: He has always been de-pendable and fast. Gay hails fromMoose Lake.

Clarence "Dutch" Arendsee, hail-ing from Aberdeen, S. D., has beena reliable backfield man over threefootball years.

GOING GOPHERSMNNESOTA is going to lose someof its most redoubtable playersat the conclusion of the 1928 footballseason. In the column at the side areshown, from top to bottom, CaptainGeorge Gibson, Lawrence "Duke"Johnson, Edgar Ukkelberg, who putthe battle in Battle Lake, and AndrewGeer of Crookston.

Taking Gibson, Johnson and Ukkel-berg out of any man's line is goingto leave a gaping vacancy that can notbe filled by mere magic. Gibson andthe Duke have been regulars for threestraight y ears, ~ n o t h e r asset which aplayer can not pick up at a moment'snotice, and this is Ukkelberg's secondyear as a first string r e g u l ~ r . Geer, also, is play ing his third year of Go-pher football, having come out as ahalfback, only to be transformed inhis senior year in to a capable center, which position he contests with WayneKakela and Lloyd Johnson.

One has reason for wondering wheth-er th e kind of line material Minnesotahas been having for the past few yearscan always be assembled. There is nodenying that the team has been for-tunate in this respect, although it isequally true that material for line sub-stitutions has been on a plane hazard-ously below that of the first string.

M inn esota's entire line is m a d ~ upof men from Minnesota towns andgraduates of Minnesota high schools, with the exception of George Gibson, who hails from Medford, Okla. Gib-son and- hi s brother Bill chose Minne-sota among al l the universities fouryears ago and rode up here on a boxcar, or bronco, or something, to attendcollege. Results were mutually satis-factory.

Minnesota bids these four linemenfarewell with deep regret. Maybe ithas to be, but it's not right.

President Coffman insiststhat he became "chancellor" in 1851,but was not born fo r nearly 30 yearsafter that, so it must be al l wrong.President Coffman was for sometime a member of the Indiana facultyand is a loyal Hoosier, except on football days when Indiana and Minnesotahappen to be clashing. At such moments not even the hardiest would dare, question his complete loyalty to thesturdy team of Northmen. At one time President Coffman wasprincipal of a high school in JamesWhitcomb Riley's home state, and inthat capacity also coached the variousathletic teams.
