service learning at new dominion alternative center
TRANSCRIPT
“We need your service, right now, at this moment. I’m not
going to tell you what your role should be; that’s for you to discover. But I am asking
you to stand up and play your part. I am asking you to help
change history’s course.”
President Barack Obama
What IS Service Learning?
• …A research-based learning method where guided or classroom learning is applied through action that addresses an authentic community need in a process that allows for youth initiative and provides structured time for reflection on the service experience and demonstration of acquired skills and knowledge.
There are 5 stages in Service Learning:
• Investigation• Planning• Action• Reflection• Demonstration
INVESTIGATION
• Individual student assessment; i.e., talents, skills, strengths and weaknesses, attitudes and values…
• Classroom assessment; roles, relationships, expectations (team building)…
• Community assessment; i.e., brainstorm ideas, survey needs, identify community partners, etc.
PLANNING
• Brainstorm as a group. Identify what needs to be done and who needs to do it.
• Make sure it is tied to curriculum goals and objectives. Can it cross curricula?
• Discuss possible obstacles and ways to overcome them. Adjust the scope of the plan, if necessary.
ACTION!• Direct Service: Students work hands-on with the
recipients of the plan.• Indirect Service: Students work behind the scenes.• Advocacy: Students work for a cause about which
they are passionate.• Research: Students conduct research and share
findings with someone who will use the research.
