MissionClinica Privata Villalba is part of the network of healthcare facilities distributed over the national and international territory belonging to GVM Care&Research, a private Italian group committed to healthcare, research, the biomedical industry, spa treatments and business services, with headquarters in Lugo (Ravenna). Our hospital conveys the philosophy of the Group, which envisages the realisation of high specialisation healthcare facilities on a human scale, with the goal of guaranteeing clinical results and attention to the person, taking care of quality in every detail.

PrinciplesCentrality of the person

INFORMATION AND PARTICIPATIONWe believe that clear and correct information on state of health and on the proposed treatments allow the user to make conscious decisions about his/her own health and quality of life. We also guarantee the active participation of each guest, promoting the possibility of expressing opinions and providing suggestions and observations. For this purpose we have prepared a satisfaction questionnaire that we give to users during their stay at the facility, inviting them to fill it out and place in the special container at the time of discharge.

User protection and participation are also guaranteed by the possibility of lodging complaints about any disservices through:

a) the prepared form, which can be requested from the head nurse or at the Head Office;b) letter on plain paper sent to the Head Office or delivered in person;c) signed fax, telephone report or e-mail to the Head Office.

The Head Office will answer the reports that can be resolved quickly; in the other cases it will start an investigation with the managers of the Operational Units and/or services and provide a response in any case within 30 days.

RESPECT FOR THE INDIVIDuALRespect for the individual is realised in the attention to life habits and privacy, in the minimisation of waiting times and formalities, in the development of interpersonal relationships, in particular between doctor and patient, and in the attention to comfort to create a hospitable and familiar environment.

Established in Bologna in 1966, Clinica Privata Villalba is a private multi-specialty hospital that has been part of GVM Care&Research since 1997.

The operating division comprises five operating rooms, four of them dedicated to major surgery and one to outpatient surgery. The “critical care - intensive care” area has 7 beds, one of them in isolation, all equipped with invasive and/or non-invasive continuous patient monitoring and with devices to prevent bed sores.

In the process undertaken, Quality is conceived as clinic management planning, to improve the services supplied, fully meet the needs of the user and make the most of the healthcare facility’s internal resources.

HOTEL SERVICESThe hospital rooms, finished with cherry wood and carefully furnished, are single and have a bed or sofa bed for the accompanier, private bathroom (complete with linens and hairdryer) and have:- autonomous air conditioning system- nurse call system with speakerphone- centralised oxygen, vacuum and medical air distribution system- telephone- Wi-Fi- TV- mini-fridge- safe

A “courtesy kit” is also provided, composed of shower cap, shampoo & shower gel, soap, disposable slippers, potpourri, mending kit and paper handkerchiefs. Restaurant serviceAccompaniers, visitors and, when possible, patients can enjoy lunch at the restaurant located on the ground floor. Menus for celiacs and personalised menus based on the doctors’ instructions are possible.

RELIGIOuS SERVICEFreedom of worship is guaranteed in respect of all religions. The facility houses a Catholic Chapel.

At admission we recommend that you bring with you any health documentation related to previous hospitalisations or medical assessments and the list of medicines that you usually take.

Useful information for the hospital stayWe advise the user to bring the clothing and items necessary for personal care and hygiene, in particular:- nightgown, possibly made of natural fibres (wool or cotton) with a spare set if necessary- dressing gown and slippers (a tracksuit may be worn, if preferred)- personal toiletries- books or magazines

The admissions office is available for further information.

DischargeOn the day of discharge the ward doctor will provide the discharge letter, addressed to your doctor, containing indications and information on the hospitalisation and on the post-discharge treatment.

The patient may request a photocopy of the medical records from the Admissions Office which, depending on preferences, may be mailed or delivered in person within 20 days from the date of request.

Outpatient ServicesThe modes of access and treatment illustrated below concern the set of healthcare services provided on an outpatient basis: Specialist visits, lab tests, diagnostic imaging (Radiology, Ultrasound, CT, MRI) and instrumental diagnostics (ultrasounds and Dopplers doppler).

Required documentationA GP’s referral is not required for paid services, while paid services in agreement with Insurances, Associations, Agencies and Health Insurance Funds require the documentation specified in the agreement with the Agency. The Outpatient Office can provide further information upon request.

Delivery of medical reportsMedical reports can be picked up by the patient or by another formally delegated person at the Outpatient Office. You can ask to have the medical reports mailed to your home address by filling out the appropriate forms available at the Outpatient Office.

I The Departments

Cardiothoracic-Vascular DepartmentANGIOLOGy uNITThe team deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of venous and arterial vascular diseases, in both the acute and chronic phases. Complex diseases like angioplasties of peripheral vessels and diabetic foot are dealt with using pharmacological or surgical medical treatments, even in the catheterisation laboratory.

CARDIOLOGy uNITCoronary, valvular and mediastinal heart diseases are treated. The team has among the most state-of-the-art non-invasive and invasive diagnostic means available, like the Aquilion One 640 Slice 4D CT scanner, the dynamic volume technology that allows drastically reducing diagnostic times and thus exposure to radiation and the contrast medium dosage. Hypokinetic and hyperkinetic arrhythmias are treated with possibility of ablation of accessory pathways and implantation of pacemakers or defibrillators.

CARDIAC SuRGERy uNITThe most important coronary or valvular alterations, such as mitral regurgitation, are treated. We generally favour the mini-invasive approach, which allows reducing the impact for the patient and recovery times both in Intensive Care and at home.

VASCuLAR SuRGERy uNITThis unit deals with venous or arterial diseases of surgical interest, from varicose veins of the lower limbs to aortic aneurysms up to problems involving the carotid arteries, using both traditional surgical techniques and methods with reduced tissue trauma.

THORACIC SuRGERy uNITPrimary and secondary (metastasis) lesions and alterations of the lung, pleura, trachea and oesophagus are treated, as well as benign disorders like palmar or axillary hyperhydrosis and pneumothorax, mainly using video-laparoscopic treatment techniques. A program for the early detection of lung cancer is also underway.

Head-Neck DepartmentMAxILLOFACIAL SuRGERy uNITThe team deals with morphological alterations and dento-skeletal (VIII included), maxillary, nasal (rhinoseptoplasty), oral cavity, salivary gland (stones) diseases, both congenital and acquired.

DENTISTRy AND STOMATOLOGy uNITThe team performs implant and extraction surgery, dental hygiene or conservative treatment activities. The procedures can also be performed under general controlled anaesthesia for children or disabled persons, where necessary.

OTORHINOLARyNGOLOGy uNITThe most frequent disorders are treated, including paediatric (tonsils, adenoids) and the more complex ones like snoring surgery, diagnosis and treatment of nighttime snoring, as well as alterations of the outer and inner ear. Aesthetic treatments like face lifting, rhinoplasty (surgery to reshape the nose) or otoplasty (ear pinning) for so-called “protruding ears” are also performed.

OPHTHALMOLOGy uNITThe team deals with the treatment of the anterior segment (cataracts, glaucoma), the posterior segment (vitrectomy, retinal detachment) and of refractive disorder.

NEuROSuRGERy uNITClinica Privata Villalba is at the forefront in the treatment of back pain and in peripheral nerve disorders, neuromas and carpal tunnel syndrome.

uROLOGy uNITThe Urology Team performs specialist visits as well as medical and surgical treatments of the diseases of the urogenital tract, from benign and malignant disease of the prostate, of the bladder, of the kidney and ureter to calculosis, urinary incontinence - including female - and penile prosthetic surgery. The team’s strong point is mini invasive laparoscopic and endourologic surgery especially owing to the new thulium and holmium laser technologies, particularly indicated in the treatment of benign prostatic hypertrophy and urinary calculosis.

GyNAECOLOGy uNITThe diagnostic path involves specialist visits complete with office ultrasound, Pap test, colposcopy and possible portio biopsy. As regards the surgical path, special attention is offered to the so-called mini invasive approach, i.e. as respectful as possible of the physical integrity of women, containing the surgical aggression required to eradicate or correct diseases of the uterus and ovaries to the utmost. The vaginal approach, in other words the complete absence of visible incisions, deserves special mention. This technique, eliminating the surgical trauma connected with the opening of the abdominal wall, is also feasible in patients at high surgical and anaesthesiological risk, like the elderly, who have debilitating systemic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, as well as severely obese patients.

Medical DepartmentThis unit works both as support to all the other surgical units, and on its own for the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal, gynaecological, urological, endocrine, oncological and brain disorders. The team performs diagnostic and operative pancolonoscopies and gastroscopies under sedation. Clinica Privata Villalba has a state-of-the-art pneumology service for the early detection of lung cancer and the treatment of all types of respiratory disorders. They offer post-operative care to patients coming from other healthcare facilities and/or long-term due to internal pathologies.

Health Support ServicesSome of the diagnosis and treatment services listed support the medical-surgical hospitalisation activities and offer outpatient services for outside patients, while other services are synergistic with the hospital wards. The Hospital Directorate coordinates and monitors all medical and surgical activities to ensure the highest quality standards and compliance with the guidelines.

Musculoskeletal Department ORTHOPAEDICS AND TRAuMATOLOGy uNIT The common diagnostic and operative arthroscopies of knee, shoulder, ankle and, above all, hip are performed here, with the possibility of functional assessments through MR-arthro. The best known orthopaedic prostheses, even ceramic, are used during the operation for hip, knee, shoulder and elbow.The team deals with neoplastic bone, muscle and cartilage diseases and surgically resolves traumatic lesions, also providing the necessary physiotherapy rehabilitation. Clinica Privata Villalba also stands out for the results and the important applications in hand surgery and in shoulder surgery.

Surgical Department GENERAL SuRGERy uNIT The team is specialised in the diagnosis and treatment of neoplastic - and non-neoplastic - diseases of the liver, bile ducts and pancreas. Colon rectal disease and hernia are treated using the most recent techniques, while we attempt to reduce surgical trauma as much as possible when treating urogenital, breast and thyroid problems. MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING uSING AN OPEN 0.26 T SySTEMThe magnetic resonance unit installed at Clinica Privata Villalba is a Picker Philips 0.26 Tesla “open”. This model has a very large space that reduces or eliminates the feeling of claustrophobia in patients and, based on the same duration, allows obtaining the same or a better image quality compared to the MRI scan performed with a classic machine. In addition, the “open” magnets of the high performance MRI replace the “tunnel”, which in many cases is poorly tolerated by claustrophobic patients. This type of MRI is especially indicated for musculoskeletal system diseases.

BONE DENSITOMETRy (CBM) Computerised bone mineralometry (CBM) is a diagnostic technique for the assessment of the degree of mineralisation of bones and thus it is the examination of reference for the diagnosis of osteoporosis. The most widespread technique for performing CBM is the so-called DXA, which uses an X-ray device. The lumbar spine and the femoral neck are the skeletal sites of choice for CBM. The CBM does not require preparation, nor does it cause pain or discomfort; it also reduces the dose of radiation absorbed by the patient to the lowest levels.

MAMMOGRAM This is the morphological technique used for a complete breast examination and offers the highest level of sensitivity, 85-90%, if the breast has abundant adipose structures or less than 70% if the adipose component is scarce, particularly for tumors in the initial phase of development. Regardless of age, it can be used as the basic technique in prevention programs. In the presence of evidence from a clinical examination, a mammogram should always be carried out on women over 35 years of age.

4D VOLuMETRIC CT This is state-of-the-art equipment capable of acquiring 640 slices involving complete coverage of an organ, like the heart or brain, the liver or the pelvis in a single rotation lasting about 30 hundredths of a second.The great rapidity of acquisition allows combining better image quality with the lowest dose of radiation currently possible. For example, from a study carried out, for an examination of the paranasal sinuses performed with a CT scan to high-end technical standards, the dose is equivalent to 35 chest x-rays (parameter for measuring the radiation dose of one examination); with the 4D volumetric CT available at Clinica Privata Villalba, on the other hand, the dose is equal to 3.5 chest x-rays, 90% lower.This equipment is particularly indicated in dynamic investigations such as the study of vascular regions like the cardiac and cerebral regions and that of the abdominal organs or the study of articular structures in motion.The largeness of its “gantry” - the hole through which the patient’s body is inserted - as well as its great scanning speed make this scanner indicated for the most difficult patients also, such as obese patients and those who are not very cooperative. INTERNAL uLTRASOuND SERVICEAn ultrasound is an instrumental exam that relies on the use of sound waves (ultrasounds) to supply images of the organs of almost the entire human body in a way that is absolutely non-invasive and harmless for the user. Thanks to recent technological innovation, it is possible to use ultrasound techniques in the urological and gynaecological field through the use of intracavitary probes that allow the diagnosis of neoplastic diseases in the early


the coronary arteries and thus it serves to precisely evaluate the risk of myocardial infarction (heart attack). The programme measures the degree of calcification of the coronary arteries, whose closure is the main cause of heart attack. The test lasts around 30 seconds and does not require contrast medium.

- Virtual CoronarographyVirtual coronarography is recommended in subjects at risk or with cardiac symptoms, and it is particularly indicated in bypass controls on patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Besides the calcium test, it includes a complete cardiological assessment with ECG, the non-invasive study of the coronary arteries (coronary angioCT) and the ultrasound measurement of the carotid artery intima. The test requires the intravenous injection of a small amount of contrast medium.

- Total body plusThis is a global CT exam extended to the entire body and allows studying neck, chest, heart, abdomen and pelvis. The screening lasts around 10 minutes and provides detailed information on the presence of neoformations or anomalies. This exam can reveal many diseases hidden in the brain and heart, as well as lung cancer, kidney and liver tumours, abnormalities of the prostate, ovaries, uterus, adrenal glands, spleen and gall bladder. It can also reveal bone alterations like osteoporosis. It differs from a classic total body CT because the reconstructed images allow a better and more accurate analysis of the internal organs.

- Virtual colonoscopyThis is the examination of the large intestine. It allows identifying potentially dangerous neoformations, even of small diameter, and assessing the involvement of the intestinal wall. It is capable of examining those sections of the intestine that cannot be reached even by traditional colonoscopy. The screening lasts 30 seconds and involves the injection of a small amount of air into the intestine, which is neither painful nor invasive. It is very useful for early detection of colon cancer; furthermore, reliable scientific studies have shown a large degree of correspondence with traditional colonoscopy.

- 3D CT angiographyWith this programme it is possible to highlight any arterial region of the body, from the cerebral region to the peripheral region of the lower limbs. It is not necessary to insert catheters inside the body, as with traditional angiography, and the simple intravenous

injection of the contrast medium suffices. The test normally lasts under a minute and allows detecting silent diseases that can sometimes cause severe disabilities or sudden deaths, including stroke, brain or aortal aneurysms. It also makes it possible to assess the circulation of blood in the brain, in the internal organs – like liver and kidneys – and in the lower limbs. In case of severe venous disorders (varicose veins), the study can also be extended to the veins.

- Dental ScanThis is a programme dedicated to the assessment of the dental arches and to the measurement of the precise relationships between bones and teeth, both to study bone defects and malformations and to assess endoosseous implants through reconstructions that allow revealing any grafts.
