Immigrant LicenseRepeal Falls Short In

First VoteBARRY MASSEYAssociated Press

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) -- Republican Gov. Susana Martinez suffereda temporary political setback Thursday in a bid to stop New Mexicofrom granting driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants.

A legislative committee shelved her proposal and approved aDemocrat-backed alternative that continues to allow licenses for illegalimmigrants but with new restrictions.

The politically-charged fight is far from over, however. The legisla-tion heads to another panel for consideration and Martinez stands astrong chance of success if the issue reaches the full 70-member Housefor a vote. A measure to overturn New Mexico’s license policy for immi-grants passed the House last year with the support of eight Democratsand one independent.

“I’ve got all the votes I need in the House,” said Rep. Andy Nunez, aHatch independent sponsoring the governor’s proposal.

Nunez conceded it’s very uncertain whether the measure can clear theDemocrat-controlled Senate, which solidly rejected it last year.

Income generated throughHearts Desire will be used to makethe recovery center a reality. Landon south Main Street was recentlypurchased from local businessmenJohnny Vega and James Wright. The men also graciously donatedone lot to the organization. Theland purchase will help pave theway for the new treatment center.

The organization generatedover $300,000 last year throughsales, donations and grants andhas grown from the single thriftstore to a furniture store andOutreach Center. The thrift storerecently started collecting andsorting donated clothing and shoesfor “Charity Shoes and Clothing”.This means clothing and shoeswill end up in needy third-worldcountries and not in the local land-fill. Heart’s Desire gets a check forthe clothing each time it fills a

shipping container.“She’s evidence of what God

can do with you if you let him,”says her husband Jimmy.

Feltman collects no salary forthe time she puts in for the organi-zation. “I don’t know where shegets so much energy…I don’t havethat much energy myself,” laughsJimmy.
