LITURGY CORNER100 yrs ago the first Monday in Sept was not aholiday. Working people in NYC walked off theirjobs so they could meet and march together. Thiswas one moment in a long struggle for the rights

of working people. Labor Day became a holiday to honor thesacrifice and amazing courage of workers who had no standingat all until they all stood together. It then became a federalholiday in 1894 to remind us that human work can’t be boughtand sold. It became a holiday to acknowledge the right ofworking people to organize unions and to stand in solidarity. We need to know what it means today to stand in solidarityand to think about other people as brothers and sisters. Weneed to know what it means that what hurts one will hurt usall, that what is of benefit to one is of benefit to all. Laborunions did not begin with grand schemes for millions ofworkers. They began with a few people saying, “If you treatmy co-worker like that, you won’t have me to push aroundanymore.” In place after place, mostly poor and powerlesspeople saw that their only power was solidarity with oneanother. That is what is asked of us now. Labor Day beganas a celebration of courageous solidarity. We can continue the

celebration!

FAITH AT HOMEAs painful as it was, Jesus was not to bedissuaded from his call. The glory of theResurrection had to pass through the suffering

and humiliation of the cross. As we pass through our ownanguish, we eventually rise again and discover new truthsabout our divine call. Adults: What have I discoveredthrough my own crosses? Children: For what difficulty orcross will I ask God’s help? A Family Perspective: As yougather as a family, talkabout what we expect God to be doing in our world andin our family life. Do we sometimes forget to let God beGod for us? That is, do we sometimes get discouragedbecause God doesn't act in our world in the ways thatwe expect?

From Fr. Roberto:

Dear friends,

What’s going on this week? First of all I would like to wish you a Happy Labor Day, Monday, September 4th. Havefun and enjoy the opportunity to be with family and friends free from your responsibilities at work. However, don’t forget to give thanks to Our Lord for having a job. Don’t forget also to pray for those who are unemployedand going through a difficult time. In observance of Labor Day our Rectory will be closed on Monday.

Secondly, we have heard about the devastation caused in Texas/Louisiana by Hurricane Harvey. It will take a longtime for people to recover from the storm’s damage. As always happens in situations like this, our Bishop is askingus to help those people in need. He wants us to take a second collection the weekend of September 30/October 1.There will be no special envelopes for that collection. Whatever we collect on that second collection, the parishwill send to the Diocese.

Third, as you know, I gave Fr. Milton the responsibility of training the Altar Servers. This is a beautiful ministry fora young priest that I had myself as a parochial vicar at my previous parish. I hope with all my heart to see oursanctuary full of children as our Altar Table is meant to be surrounded by our children. This is the place at churchwhere they belong. May our Good Lord grant us the grace to have them as an essential part of our liturgies. Wealso have Adult Altar Servers and we thank them for their service and encourage our Adult People to join them inserving at the Altar. Fr. Milton is willing to work hard with the Altar Servers. He will have his first meeting withthem on Tuesday, September 12 at 6:30 PM. Please, remember that our children should be accompanied by afamily member.

Finally, weeks ago I mentioned at Mass that we were dealing with the rental of the school building. It wasn’t thateasy. It involved meetings, the agreement of the Diocese, many conversations on the phone and negotiations.Thank God it’s over! We signed the lease last week. The tenant will be another school. They are from AbundantLife Church in town. It has been a pleasure to talk so many times with Pastor Joe and Pastor Donnie. They aregood people of God. I am sure they will be wonderful tenants and our relationship with them will grow. Theirschool is small and they don’t want to rent the whole building. We are giving them the opportunity to growgradually. This means we are not receiving that much. However, there are many other benefits: we are able toshare our building with them for Religious Education and any other activities, our building will not be empty, theywill take care of maintenance and cleaning, we will share payments of utilities and above all there will be lifeagain on our property. We love to see children all over the place! Eventually, their school will get bigger and wewill also receive more benefits from that growth. We wish them the best on their mission as people of God. Maymany children come to be part of their program. God has been very good to us allowing us to share our propertywith people who share our very mission: preaching the Gospel of Christ with the example of our lives. May God bealways with all of us. May He help us to do his work.

Blessings, Fr. Roberto
