Awesome Armistice Appeal

This could not have been possible without the many poppy sellers from various RSL sporting groups, the RSL Day Club members, Probus Club of Phillip Island members and numerous other volunteers who gave their time to sell poppies at five main venues and various other locations.

Chris Cannin, Phillip Island RSL Appeals Co ordinator said: “This, along with other personnel who walked the Phillip Island Racing Circuit , Thompson Avenue, the Concourse industrial estate and additional other sites ensured we achieved the outcome we did.”

“This success could not have been achieved without the excellent assistance from fellow RSL Committee members Michael and Sue Curwood who were there with me every day during the Appeals selling period to assist in this mammoth task in collating the daily takings, refilling the selling boxes, manning selling points when required along with numerous other tasks, confirming it really is a team effort. “

Once again a huge thanks to our community and to those who participated in the Poppy Appeal selling period culminating in securing this record amount to support current and former Service members in need.

REMEMBRANCE DAY – 100 years of ArmisticeA large crowd attended the Cowes Remembrance Day Ceremony held at the recently refurbished cenotaph on Sunday 11 November.

The ceremony was conducted by Phillip Island RSL President, Greg Mead OAM with local song bird

Kelly Foster singing the hymn and national anthems. Andrew Foon played the bugle and the lone piper was provided thanks to the Old Haileyburians.

The President was thrilled with the attendance including a group of young girl guides from Pearcedale.

Festive Season

2

Serendipity Summer newsletter 2018

Phillip Island RSL Committee, Management and Staff wish all members a happy and safe festive season. Relax and enjoy the vibe of Phillip Island – slow down, take a deep breath and please look out for our local wildlife.

Summer is a very busy time on Phillip Island so please be patient when trying to book your table for lunch or dinner.

We will attend to your call as soon as we can; in the meantime, you can book on line at:

www.pirsl.com.au

Bookings are required to avoid disappointment.

Dear Members, Staff and Committee

May I take this opportunity to wish you and your families a happy and healthy Christmas and 2019.

To all our volunteers, thank you for caring and assisting other members requiring a helping hand.I never cease to be amazed by your efforts. Fellow committee members are well intentioned volunteers who do an amazing job at considerable cost to themselves. Well done.

2018 has seen changes in our Administration most notably the appointment of Mr. Jess Feather as our General Manager. Jess, although only forty years of age, comes to us with eighteen years of highly successful general management behind him. Mr. Brad Carter has been appointed as our 'Operations Manager.' Brad has been promoted from within and now has the opportunity to take on this new and exciting role in assisting you and indeed the RSL into the future. Both Jess and Brad have a wealth of experience and I have no doubt that Jess with Brad's assistance will achieve positive results in this next phase of exciting times. I must say I am very enthusiastic about the future of our Phillip Island RSL. We were in need of a boost in areas of our operation and premises that were a little 'tired.' Our Committee and new General Manager will provide that much needed lift and excitement.

Committee Treasurer Mr. Steve Davie resigned after 10 years service but has agreed to assist where possible. I thank him for his loyalty and tireless support. I am proud to announce that our building loan will no longer exist with our final payment this month. Mr. Peter Paul is a great mentor in all portfolios. Peter never ceases to amaze me with his intensity and energy sitting on several committees. Peter has agreed to take on the extra role of Treasurer until our AGM, on the 7th April 2019,

when voting will take place for Treasurer, Vice President and two general committee positions. These positions are for a two year term although to stand for Treasurer or Vice President, under State RSL rules, a person must have had one year within the last five years on our committee.

Vice President Mr. Chris Thompson has willingly undertaken numerous duties throughout the year and has done so admirably. Mr. Michael Curwood and his wife Mrs. Sue Curwood seem to live in the RSL. They both have huge energy and are willing to help in all portfolios. Mr. Terry Heffernan has put in nearly ten years on committee chairing the Men's Shed and our Welfare and Charitable operations – not easy tasks but well done. Mr. Chris Cannin joined the committee this year chairing many portfolios and is doing a sterling job.

The changes to personnel is the catalyst for a reappraisal of our structures and Strategic Plan. I look forward to the challenges and the positive outcomes for the benefit of all at the RSL as we plan for an exciting future.

Thank you to all who were able to attend our Remembrance Day commemorations and the presentation by Mr. Michael Madden about his amazing journey compiling his coffee table book “The Victoria Cross – Australia Remembers.”.

In 2019 our RSL will celebrate 80 years involvement in the Phillip Island Community. I thank our foundation members and subsequent members for the wonderful legacy they have given us.

Healthy choice optionsOver the winter months, we asked for your input regarding our latest initiative with Bass Coast Health using a traffic light symbol system on our seniors and kids menus. We appreciate your feedback and as a result, we received an overwhelming level of support to roll the Healthy Choice options across the entire menu.(95%). The summer menu will be released in December so your feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Community benefits from Phillip Island RSL community grants!

7

Seven local community groups benefited recently from community grants provided by Phillip Island RSL which will result in the following projects being funded. These projects will benefit a cross section of our local community in a number of different ways.

Serendipity Summer newsletter 2018

Daryl Hergt from the Cowes Yacht Club was a guest presenter at the ceremony who described how the 2017 grant benefited their club “the funds enabled us to purchase two new Opti training dinghies where a great number of young people specifically in the age group of 7 to 12 years, had the chance to learn sailing over the summer period. It’s great to see kids get off the couch and onto the water!” Daryl said.

Newly opened Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic primary school received $4,000 to purchase three flagpoles to display the Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island flags, their installation and suitable landscaping.

Phillip Island Senior Citizens Club has an annual power bill of $12,000 so to minimise the expense, and to ensure that their popular senior’s programs continue, the club is seeking funding to purchase solar panels. The RSL’s grant of $4000 will assist in leveraging the total funding required to purchase the solar panels.

Phillip Island Movie Club has close to 150 members with many on a wait list, screening monthly movies at St Philips Church hall. Recently their amplifier had a melt-down so the grant of $1,500 will enable to the club to purchase a new amp and continue with their monthly movie program.

A grant of $800 was provided to the Phillip Island & District Genealogy Society replacing its current printer, copier and scanner with updated equipment. This will greatly assist Society members and other researchers by keeping printing costs down.

The Phillip Island Cemetery Trust was provided $1,500 which will be used to purchase a sculpture of two soldiers to be located on the island in the Cemetery’s wetlands. This island is reached by the ANZAC bridge built in commemoration of WW1

veterans about four years ago. The wetlands offers the community an affordable option of memorialising their loved ones by way of spreading ashes from the bridge and having a plaque memorial made which is attached to the island’s memorial rock.

The oldest building in Bass Coast Shire is the St Philips Anglican Church, turning 150 years old next year. The church is a favourite on tourist’s lists viewing the unique historic leadlight window. Sadly, the weatherboards have deteriorated badly so the grant of $5,000 will pay for the replacement weatherboards and subsequent repainting.

Phillip Island Pony Club is not only 60 years old but also one of the oldest established pony clubs in Victoria providing a safe and supportive environment for young horse owners up to 25 years. The grant of $500 will provide dressage arena letter cones.

The Phillip Island RSL’s commitment for the 2018 community grants is $17,300.

Pictured are the lucky recipients with Phillip Island RSL Committee and Management from left to right: Jess Feather, General Manager, Phillip Island RSL. Angela Luke, Phillip Island Movie Club. Letter of thanks received from Phillip island Pony Club for Horse Rider Fall Safety Program

On behalf of Phillip Island Pony Club I would like to thank the Phillip Island RSL for your commitment to improving the safety of our members.

Your sponsorship of the recent Horse Rider Fall Safety Program enabled our riders to access training that may one day save their lives.

The training program incorporated a mixture of important skills riders can implement to reduce their risk of serious injury. During the sessions riders were taught, amongst other things, the Brace Position (important in the protection of the head, neck and back) and the Tuck and Roll (to disperse impact forces and prevent the rider ending up under the horse).

We greatly appreciate the continued support of the RSL and sincerely thank you for your ongoing support of the club.

The Breakfast Program at Cowes Primary School will conclude on Wednesday 12 December and will resume in 2019 from the beginning of Term two.

A sincere thank you to the zealous 15 volunteers who have supported the rotational roster of volunteers this year. With so many willing volunteers we were able to spread the load. The RSL can only offer the school Breakfast Program because of the fabulous volunteers and their hard work and support.

Thankyou also to Deputy Michael Curwood for his support in helping to introduce new ways to run the program.

Generous weekly bread donations from Woolworths and Coles have been greatly appreciated.

An end of year "Thank you" RSL luncheon for our volunteers is a small thank you for their hard work.

Breakfast Program

The Captain, Lindsay and his lovely wife, Irene prepared a sumptuous barbecue lunch on board including home made salads, fresh fruit platters and home made cakes, tea and coffee. The 2019 calendar of events will be available by the end of January and will be placed on our website www.pirsl.com.au.

Kaye Cannin joined the Islander's Day Club as a volunteer in October 2007 who took up the role of tours and entertainment organiser, scheduling a yearly calendar of activities and events from guest speakers, games days, craft days, at least four bus trips a year, dine outs, Christmas in July function, birthday on Cup eve, and Christmas breakup. Kaye loved organising these activities for the wonderful seniors who always thanked and appreciated everything the Day Club organised for them. Kaye has seen membership grow from about 20 odd members to about 80 and with a waiting list. “we have been so lucky to have been fully supported by the RSL with their generous subsidies when needed” Kaye said. On top of all that, Kaye is a member of Probus Phillip Island and has been on the committee for about ten years, performing various roles including President. “I am leaving Day Club in the hands of good volunteers and committee who will have new ideas and continue to grow.”

Islander's Day ClubPhillip Island RSL’s Islander’s Day Club enjoyed a lovely 24 degree day on Western Port Bay on board the Tidemaster based out of Tooradin.

CONGRATULATIONS!!

The Circle of Friends ProgramThe monthly program continues and attended by at least a dozen guests.VCS are always on the lookout for suitable candidates amongst our database (and the greater community) for this program. We are looking for individuals who are potentially socially isolated and may benefit from a casual social engagement.

Portsea Camp 2019The application process for the Portsea Camp 2019 has been completed. We will be funding and transporting 8 children to the Portsea Camp in late January 2019. Two students from Cowes PS, San Remo PS, Newhaven PS and Newhaven College will be attending.

Advocacy AssistancePension/Advocate Officer Bruce Dunlop is visiting our Sub-Branch to meet with Service members and their dependants on a fortnightly basis (depending on demand). To assist all local Veterans in need of DVA assistance we have made email and postal contact with over 400 of our service members. We have received several requests to meet with Bruce. We will work with Bruce to organise appointments

Veteran & Dependant AssistanceIn September VCS provided a young Veteran and his family with firewood. We have previously assisted this family financially and with the provision of groceries. VCS has continued to seek quotes to provide an over 70’s Service member with a replacement gutter/down pipe. We have previously organised and financed a gutter clean for this member.

Veterans’ Health Week 2018This year Veterans' Health Week was held between Saturday 22 September to Sunday 30 September. The theme was Nutrition, thus we offered a free meal promotion to our Service members. 126 Service members took advantage of this promotion at an estimated cost of $3,780 (average $30 per meal).

RSL ActiveOur Sub-Branch will host a second RSL Active event for 2018 in December. This will take place from Monday 10 to Thursday 13 of December. At this stage we will be running a similar program to the one that we ran in April. So far we have 6 guests registered to attend.

Memorabilia. It must be appreciated that we at Phillip Island hold one of the most comprehensive collections of memorabilia in the State. With this responsibility comes a few conditions which must be considered before you donate any articles to the collection.

Projects underway include conversion of the original storage cupboard into social and office space, manufacturing a shelving unit, manufacturing sanding blocks, repairing six dining chairs, restoring a Grandfather Clock for Churchill Island, manufacturing a camper van bed support, cut and painted table number dowels for the RSL, repairing an antique table, manufacturing a triple seat “Santa Seat” for the Cheeky Goose Cafe, manufacturing a small book shelf unit, covering a table top with recycled fence palings and some members are

involved with their own projects. The attendance numbers at each session averages eighteen to nineteen, which put a strain on space for members to work in. We are currently investigating the option of opening on an additional day during the week.

The last session for 2018 is Tuesday 18 December followed by lunch at the Lone Pine Bistro. The Shed will reopen on Tuesday 22 January 2019 at 9am.

An extraordinary amount of work has gone into the production of this book. The presentation is superb, Covers are finished with a heavy hardboard including a decorative window cut out. Internally, the pages are ordained with numerous colour

photography illuminating the family legacy of the original Victoria Cross recipient and indeed all Australians.

This Australian Military book captures the history of Australia’s most prestigious award for acts of bravery in the face of the enemy and its highest military honour, the Victoria Cross Medal, the VC. Since 1856, when the award was created by Queen Victoria, 100 Australian servicemen have been recognised with the Cross.

Several biography books about Australian Victoria Cross medal recipients have been written over the years. One of the most important considerations of purchasing this book is that it covers all the current recipients up to and including the Afghanistan War.

This book, however, is not a traditional history book; it takes a different approach to recognising these remarkable Australians. Through 100 individual profiles of each Australian VC recipient, this book has been written

as a way for families and friends to give their perspective on the men they knew, how the Victoria Cross has affected them and how families coped after the fighting had ended. The profiles reveal just how much these men came from every walk of life and the rich colour of the families and communities they came from.

The author, supported by volunteers from the Totally & Permanently Incapacitated Ex-Servicemen & Women’s Association of Victoria Inc. (TPI Victoria), has travelled across Australia and around the world to interview families, peers and friends about these 100 remarkable Australians.

All these strands have been brought together to tell the story of the creation of the Victoria Cross, how it has evolved to find its place in modern Australia, and to illuminate the lives of these Australians with an incredible array of photographs taken on these travels, but also from official sources and the families.

Good morning team

First time to Phillip Island for us to attend the Moto GP event. "We arrived Thursday evening and were looking for a place to eat when I asked a local “where is the best place to eat?” They recommended the RSL. "They were not wrong! We were so impressed with the service and food we received on the first night of arrival, that we booked the next 3 nights without hesitation. Food was amazing and so big in portions that we struggled to get through it all…That’s value for money spent. Saturday night was overflowing with people. We still received the same service and the meals arrived promptly and of outstanding quality. Please pass on a big thank you to your amazing team you have there from your friendly person at the front entry who was there each evening to greet us to the seating, table and bar staff all of whom were extremely friendly.” – Joe & Theresa Andreucci

Pat on the back

“I would like to thank you and all your staff at the RSL for the wonderful service and excellent food served at my 80th birthday party lunch held in October – everything was just perfect” – Maureen

“Thank you to all the staff involved in the Rotary function – everyone from hospitality, bar and kitchen staff worked together to deliver a wonderful lunch and experience for our Rotary volunteers" – Joyce

"My wife and I greatly appreciated the opportunity to join with your community in the 100 years commemoration of Remembrance Day. The setting for your cenotaph is inspiring. The placing of a poppy in the urn was a wonderful moment of reflection for us and the singing of the Australian and New Zealand national anthems was moving. Your acknowledgment of the deeds of a most famous Australian leader, Sir John Monash, was a learning experience for us. Congratulations on a memorable ceremony" – Ian & Darlene McKenzie, Saskatchewan, Canada.
