1 IntroductionEarthquakesaretheprecursorofmanyhumanandeconomiclossesinEuropeandworldwide-recall,forinstance,therecentearthquakesincentralItalyinAugustandOctober2016andJanuary2017.TheaimoftheHorizon2020projectSERA(SeismologyandEarthquakeEngineeringResearchInfrastructureAllianceforEurope)istoreducetheriskposedbynaturalandanthropogenicearthquakes,basedoninnovativeresearchanddevelopmentprojects.
SERAWorkPackage2'Communication,Outreach,Dissemination'enablesaprofound,consistentandefficientexchangeofinformationinthelargercommunityofstakeholdersinthefieldsofseismologyandseismicengineering.WithintheSERAproject,theEuropeanSeismicHazardModelisbeingupdatedand extended. Relevant activities include the definition of engineering output requirements, theupdatingandextensionoftheseismogenicsourcemodelandthegroundmotionpredictionequation(GMPE)logictree,andtheinterfacetoEurocode8andriskmodelling.Therefore,intheframeworkofthecommunicationactivities,theJointResearchCentre(JRC)oftheEuropeanCommissionorganiseda workshop on seismic hazard assessment, together with SERA project partners and experts fromCEN/TC 250/SC 8. CEN/TC 250/SC 8 featuring among the main stakeholders on the topic of theworkshop,asitisresponsibleforEN1998'Eurocode8:Designofstructuresforearthquakeresistance'and is currently working on the next generation of Eurocodes under a standardisation mandate1,includingtherepresentationoftheseismicaction.
Theworkshopintendedtofacilitatethedialoguebetweenstakeholders.Thespecificobjectivesweretoprovidefirst-handinsightsontheoutputsoftheSERAproject,linkSERAactivitieswithotherscientificefforts in the field, and ensure awidely accepted basis for the development of the new EuropeanSeismicHazardModel.Thecollaborationinitiatedattheworkshopwillultimatelycontributetobridgingthegapbetweenresearchandstandardisation,andtothereductionofseismicriskinEurope.

2 AgendaTheworkshoplastedafulldayandcomprisedpresentationsonthelatestdevelopmentsregardingtheupdatingandextensionoftheEuropeanSeismicHazardModel(ESHM19/20)andseismicriskmodellingin Europe, presentations on the developments in Eurocode 8 regarding the representation of theseismic action, as well as the views of national delegates to CEN/TC 250/SC 8 on seismic hazardassessment.Theworkshopwasconcludedwitharound-tablediscussion,wherethefuturestepsinthecollaborationbetweenSERAandCEN/TC250/SC8wereagreed.TheagendaisshowninTable1.

4 ConclusionsSERAandCEN/TC250/SC8agreedtofurtherstrengthencollaborationwiththeobjectiveofoptimizingeffortsandresults inorder toensureconsistencyof requirementsandoutputs,and investigate themeans forEurocode8 to takeprofitof theresearchperformedwithin theSERAproject toadvancetowardsaharmonisedEuropeanseismiczonation.Thiswillbeachievedby:
1. Nominatingcontactpersonsfrombothsideswhowillactasliaisonbetweenthetwogroupsandwillattendrelevantmeetings.
2. ContinuingthetechnicaldiscussionandprovidingformutualparticipationinrelevantmeetingsorganizedbySERAandbyCEN/TC250/SC8.
3. Draftingatechnicalreportontheissueofderivationoftheseismichazard,whichcouldsupportadvancementtowardsaharmonisedEuropeanseismiczonationandbeconsideredasthebasisfor an eventual Informative Annex in the new version of Eurocode 8, provided that suchzonationisacceptedbyCENmembers.
