Last Friday marked the end of a veryspecial era with the final MatamataMen’s Combined Clubs Bowling Tour-nament that began 57 years ago. When the tournament was initiated eachof the local bowling clubs contributed fivepounds, giving a start-up balance of 25pounds. Entry was by way of a fee andprize money of 26 pound was distributed. It very quickly became an anticipatedevent for catching up with like-mindedfriends from all over the North Island, andteams registered their interest monthsprior to the annual event each February. As much as the competitive bowling; thefriendliness and camaraderie fostered hasalways been one of the main draw cards.Sadly however, with a marked decline inentries over recent years, the decision wasmade to host the final tournament thisyear, and it was an emotional time formany loyal competitors. On behalf of majorsponsor, Matamata Club Inc. vice PresidentRene Thomson acknowledged a superbweek. “It’s been such a pleasure hosting allthe visitors to Matamata for this tourna-ment” he said, “and we have been veryproud to be involved over many, manyyears. Of course all those reacquaintedfriendships and new introductions have al-ways provided a wonderful atmosphere onand off the greens, and I offer my congrat-ulations to everyone involved.”One of just two men to have played 50Matamata Men’s Combined Clubs Opentournaments, co-Patron, Murray Davis saidat its conclusion, that the committee has al-ways proudly upheld the reputation of afriendly, very well organized tournament.“It has been an excellent tournament overthe years” he said “and I have been veryproud to stand as your patron.” Incredibly, there was only one year the tournamentwas cancelled due to treacherous weatherconditions. Thoughts from the BibleLalla Loeffen

Lent is a time of preparation for Easter. It is a time for fervent prayerfulness– for drawing closer to God. To helpwith this aim we may make small sacri-fices, eg; giving up something we enjoy ordoing something that costs extra effort, ordoing something of benefit to others.Whatever we do to observe Lent, it shouldbe motivated by our love for Jesus. We candwell in our thoughts and reading the suf-ferings and sacrifices made for our re-demption by Jesus. We can open our mindand heart to develop a new depth of devo-

tion to our saviour. When Easter comes we are ready to cel-ebrate the joy and promise that comeswith the resurrection. A quote from PopeJohn Paul II says, “Christ goes towards his suffering, aware of its saving power; he goes forward in obedience to the Fa-ther, but primarily he is ‘united to the Fa-ther in this love’ with which he has lovedthe world, and man in the world. For thisreason St Paul will write of Christ, “Heloved me and gave himself for me.” (Gal,2:20)

A time of preparation

Building tomorrow’s future today with GatewayWelcoming John Denton, a motormechanics tutor from FairviewEducational Services (FEDS),Matamata College Gateway Coordinator,Kym Bolton Hampton was pleased to see adozen senior students begin working towards their eight week automotivetraining course through the FEDS schemethis week. The course includes practicaland theory assessments and is compli-mented with Gateway placements madeavailable with the support of local busi-nesses. “It is my job to facilitate these workplaceopportunities” says Kym, “and we are veryfortunate that Matamata College hasforged very good relationships with localemployers over the years. The relation-ships built through these opportunitiesoffer a great insight to potential industrycareers for our students but also, over theyears, have helped employers select keenand focussed young people for further

training, apprenticeships and job vacan-cies. It’s a win-win situation and we arevery proud of the association.”With a selection of tailor-made automo-tive related educational packs already in-cluded in around 200 school Gatewayprogrammes throughout New Zealand,John says that although they are writtenwith an automotive focus, the FEDScourses also include key work and lifeskills. “Many schools deliver these units tostudents across different curriculumareas” he says, “and have had tremendoussuccess – particularly with those studentsready to transition from school into theworkplace. We are an accredited trainingprovider and have been established forover 20 years. Fairview support continuesafter completion of our courses and welike to track our students when necessary, helping out with everything from creatinga CV to providing references.”Caron Stewart.

Year 12 student Stanley Mayo is enthusiastic about the Fairview Educational Services course, particularly as he intends to train in the industry as a mechanic. “I like to fix things up” he says,“and it would be good to make a career out of something I really enjoy doing.”

Pictured with Matamata College Gateway Coordinator, Kym Bolton Hampton, Fairview Edu-cational Services Tutor, John Denton and Matamata College Teacher Aide, Stacey Green, se-nior students Edward Roskam, Luke Gurnick and Irene Edwards are looking forward to gettinginto the course – especially the practical component, and at the same time gain valuable cred-its towards NCEA Level Two.

With a noticeable decline in num-bers of 18 to 21 year olds contin-uing to play rugby once they leaveschool, Hinuera Rugby & Sports Inc. andUnited Matamata Sports (UMS) realised itwas time to address the issue and providea solution. “The idea was mooted that rather thanstruggling to find an under 21 team at eachof the respective clubs, that we combinethe two and create a district team” sayslong time sponsor, Bruce Magan. “Many ofour local young fellas leave school andbegin apprenticeships or employment, andsimply get busy with life. Some years Hin-uera have enough players to field a teamand other years, UMS, but over recentyears especially, it has been increasinglydifficult for both – in fact, there were justsix under 21 teams throughout theWaikato region last season. This makes itextremely difficult to offer good competi-tion with having to play each of the teamsthree times throughout the season. It madesense to bring the two clubs together andprovide a solution that will keep theseyoung people motivated, competitive andon the field.”With support from both clubs, the newseason brings a new era in under 21 rugby- and the announcement of a new teamregistered with the Waikato Rugby Union. The Matamata Combined Colts has beenestablished on a two year trial and will bereviewed after that. It will be administeredby Bruce and managed by a mix of Hinueraand UMS club representatives. RayTuhakaraina will coach the Colts and onceplayers move up to the next grade, theycan choose which of the two clubs theywould like to be affiliated with.On behalf of Hinuera Rugby & Sports andUnited Matamata Sports, Craig Bigham andAlex Bradley agree that the combinedteam offers great opportunities that feedback to respective clubs. “The most im-portant thing is to ensure we can supportour locals that choose to continue playingrugby after they leave school and provideopportunities to further their interest and

passion for the sport” says Craig. “There isa camaraderie and ethos within teamsports like ours that builds lifelong friend-ships and support and its important wecontinue to foster and encourage that.”With the Matamata Combined Colts stripfeaturing Hinuera Rugby & Sports on onesleeve and United Matamata Sports on theother, Bruce says there are sponsorshipopportunities available and enquiries arewelcomed. Summer heat helps blow the whistleChosen by their peers, House Cap-tains have a responsibility to leadby example and motivate those thatvoted for them - and so far, the 2019 Mata-mata Primary School group are certainly

proving their worth! With one of the major focuses on pur-chasing essential sports items for gamesand activities, the captains got together re-cently and decided a fundraiser would be agreat idea to purchase extra whistles. And,with the summer bringing exceptionallyhigh temperatures of late, what better wayto raise money than by selling popsicles!Caron Stewart.

Saving our local licensingWhen New Zealand TransportAgency made the decision not torenew their Matamata lease lastyear, they had a fight on their hands and,as it happens, it was well won!Although the synergy of specialist furni-ture and flooring retailers and NZTA li-censing services might seem a little odd,the partnership is far more a communitydriven initiative by building owners

Graeme and Fay Waterson. They were notabout to see another essential agency beaccessible only in larger centres, or causeextra inconvenience to our locals.“Along with our Carpet Court Manager,Brett Watson, we fervently fought for thelicensing side of the agency to remain”says Graeme. “Whether it’s a young adultsitting a Learners License or a more ma-ture motorist renewing a license they’veheld for decades, we did not feel the justi-fication in travelling to another town totake care of something that can take lessthan half an hour was warranted.”Although the NZTA agency is a com-pletely separate business to Waterson’sSuperstore, Graeme and Fay agreed to paythe wages of Tinka Adamson who is con-tracted to NZTA to administer the agencythree days per week. “Although we could-

n’t save the AA services once provided, weare delighted to have secured the licensingside of things which also takes care ofmotor vehicle licensing, registration andbookings for practical tests etc” saysGraeme. With many of the AA services availableonline, Graeme says it’s important to remember that AA membership subscrip-tions can be paid at the ANZ bank, AA accommodation books are available at i-Site and AA mechanical servicing and call-outs are available at Challenge onBroadway. For international driving permits, online booking or AA offices inCambridge or Morrinsville are the only op-tion. For more information about servicesavailable locally, see the advert on thispage.Caron Stewart.

Suffrage in stitches Alps 2 Ocean in six daysKate Sheppard once said “Do notthink your single vote does notmatter much. The rain that re-freshed the parched ground is madeup of single drops.”Widely acknowledged as the leaderof the women's suffrage movements,it was Kate Sheppard’s third petitionthat granted women full voting rights, successfully passed in the House ofRepresentatives in August, 1893.Even with this remarkable achieve-ment however, New Zealand womenstill had a long way to go to achievepolitical equality. They would not gainthe right to stand for Parliament until1919, and the first female Member ofParliament (Elizabeth McCombs) was not elected until 1933 – 40 years after the introduction of women’s suf-frage.Now, through a collaboration pro-ject between Vinnies Re Sew and thenational creative community, the suf-frage petition is about to be recreatedthrough fabric, stories and conversa-tions. With the help of individual NewZealanders and a lot of recycled tex-tiles, Vinnies Re Sew will be creatingan extraordinary textile work reflect-ing the physical size of the originalsuffrage petition and celebrating itthrough stitching the lives of the

woman petitioners of 1893 and be-yond. The final work will be 274 me-tres long, have 546 individual panelswith 25,521 hand stitches (46 perpanel), and be the same length, num-ber of pages and votes as the originalpetition.Once the completed panels are re-ceived by Vinnies Re Sew by the endof this month, they will be backedwith a piece of fabric which shows thetextile trends over the last 125 years. They will be displayed chronologi-cally to illustrate the changes in fash-ion, colours, textures and fibres at theWellington Museum from October 29,2019.After meeting last October to dis-cuss the idea of participating in theproject, five local women have re-cently completed their panels, eachcelebrating an allocated lady whosigned the petition, and will courierthem to Wellington this week. “Thecolours green and purple featurestrongly as the colours of suffrage”says Bridget Gill, “but for us, celebrat-ing the bravery of women past issomething we have been motivatedby. It has been a wonderful challengefor us all and we are very much look-ing forward to seeing the finished ex-hibit.” Caron Stewart.

With a renewed appreciation of ourbeautiful country, local couple Dudleyand Joy Jordan recently completed a310km cycle challenge simply “because theycould!”“The Alps 2 Ocean Trail is the longest in NewZealand and has, arguably, the most variety ofscenery of any trail as well” says Dudley. “Westarted at Aoraki Mt Cook Village and had themost amazing experiences over a period of sixdays. You fly in by helicopter, ride aroundglacial and hydro lakes, down through theWaitaki Valley and finish at Oamaru. It was justwonderful – throughout the entire trip.”Well known for heading almost everywhereon their bikes, Dudley and Joy chose the modeof transport over 40 years ago - not for anyother reason than to get out and enjoy the freshair. “It’s always kept us reasonably fit” says Joy,“and at least two to three times per week, wehead off for around 20km of cycling. Dudleyhas always maintained you can’t save fitnessup and we believe this regular exercise has def-initely contributed to keeping us in fairly goodhealth over the years. It’s very enjoyable andsomething we are continually challenging eachother with. Plus of course, there’s no parkingissues when we head into town!”After completing their last major challenge, the Rail Trail, around eight years ago, the Jor-dan’s decided the Alps 2 Ocean Trail would besomething different, especially with its varietyof terrain and scenic environment. “There werehills, remote sections, small stream crossingsand some sections of trail that have a fairlyrough surface so we were fortunate to have areasonably good level of fitness” says Joy. “Itwasn’t a race and with our gear transported tothe next stop point by Cycle Journey’s, all wehad to do was bike and take in what we couldsee of our beautiful country. It was a wonder-fully well organised trail and we were very welllooked after along the way.”In thinking about trail highlights, Dudley and

Joy say it’s hard to pinpoint any particular mo-ment, but probably the peace and serenity ofthe wilderness and scenery around Lake Ohau.“It really is like seeing your own countrythrough new eyes” says Joy. “Many of the legswere in very remote areas and we hardly sawanyone else. This makes you really aware ofyour environment and boy, we are lucky to livein such a gorgeous country. We’ve always livedby the “If the best is not possible, make the bestof what is” mantra, but honestly, throughoutour experience, we really did have the best. Our summer break was time forsome of our students to focus ontheir preferred sports and excel inthem. Year 13 student Kurtis Pertab spenthis summer touring New Zealand on theRodeo scene. Kurtis finished up the2018/19 season competing in the New Zealand Rookie standings he placed2nd in the team roping header, 3rd in the rope and tie and 5th in NZ all roundrookie cowboy. The New Zealand highschool representatives trans-tasman challenge sees New Zealand take on Australia in a three round rodeo held overdifferent days at different locations. The team is usually made up of the top three cowboys and cowgirls of each

event. There are usually 12 people in theteam, three barrel racers, three steer rid-ers, three bull riders and three breakawayropers. A new team is chosen for everychallenge. Kurtis has made the NZ teamthree years in a row, as well as being in-vited to Australia three times. Kurtis hasmade an international team to travel toShawnee, Oklahoma in July 2019, and iscurrently working with the rest of theteam to plan this trip and we look forwardto hearing all about it when he gets back.Kurtis will be competing at the National Fi-nals rodeo held in Canterbury on March9th which is an invitational event andsomething to be very proud of making it athis age. Our Year 11 Student Ollie Morton-Far-relly spent his summer advancing abright athletic career. Ollie competedat the North Island Colgate Games in Januaryat Porritt Stadium. He was chosen to be theambassador of the Waikato BOP team wherehe got to lead the team out and got to openthe Games by reading the Athletes oath. Hewon three medals, one of each colour to com-plete the set. He won gold in discuss with athrow of 44.20m – (2nd place threw 39.36m)and silver in the shot put with a throw of12.13m, (1st place was only 12.17m). FinallyOllie won a bronze medal in the 100m sprintwhere the top five athletes going into the fi-nals all had times between 11.75s and 11.80s,so the competition was incredibly tough inthat race. Ollie smashed personal bests in allthe events at these games and set newrecords for the Matamata Athletic club at thesame time! And, if that wasn’t enough, thehighlight was that he won the prestigious andcoveted Nick Willis Scholarship, which isawarded to the two most outstanding ath-letes at the Games. This is a huge honour es-pecially as it is very rare for a “thrower” to beawarded this scholarship. We look forward toseeing where Ollie will go from here - and justhow many records he can beat!

Soiree acknowledges 100 years of Matamata Racing Club

NZTR acknowledge locals with service award

New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing(NZTR) introduced a Service Awardthis season designed to acknowl-edge the efforts of people who have givenlengthy (and usually unsung) contribu-tions to the thoroughbred industry. NZTR,with the assistance of Matamata RacingClub, was delighted to acknowledge locals,Roger Blake and Tom Brown who have given long and distinguished serviceas club administrators in the Waikato region and at a wider level. RichardSeabrook from Cambridge also received anaward.Tom Brown became a member of theMatamata racing Club committee in 1974and served as president from 1995 to1998. He had earlier made his mark as anamateur rider and was the leading ama-teur in New Zealand for two successive

seasons in the mid-1960s. He won theFarmers’ Steeplechase, a former historicamateur race at Te Rapa five times – “butnever won a Duke of Gloucester!” Tom alsohad a 25-year involvement with the racingjudicial system and became a valued andrespected panellist at all levels.Roger Blake became a Matamata RacingClub steward in 1979 and then joined thecommittee before succeeding his brotherin law, Tom Brown, as president in 1998.Rogers work was not confined to his localclub and, for 15 years, he was chairman ofNorthern Raceday Services, the non-profitorganisation responsible for the supply ofstarting gates and staff to race and trialmeetings throughout the northern region.Rogers first involvement with racing wasas an amateur rider and he also served aspresident of the Putaruru Point-to-Point.

Pictured from left are Sponsorship and Events Coordinator Charlene Conner, Matamata Rac-ing Club Board Chairman Dennis Ryan, MPDC Mayor Jan Barnes and Matamata Racing ClubAdministration Manager Graeme Reid.

Life members Jack McAnnalley and Barbie and Tom Brown enjoy a catch up.Board Chairman Dennis Ryan is pictured with NZ Thoroughbred Racing Chairman Dr AlanJackson and Matamata Racing Club Patron, Lindsay Tisch.

Acknowledging his Board, staff, helpers and everyone associated,Matamata Racing Club Chairman,Dennis Ryan, was delighted to welcome invited and distinguished guests to a celebration soiree held on Friday evening. “All of you and so many more are continuing a legacy started in years gone by” he said. “Our community

certainly values the village created in your own right and it is a pleasure to welcome you all here to acknowledge 100 years of successful thoroughbred racing.” During the evening guests enjoyed memorabilia, reminiscing and addresses by past and present stalwarts of the club. Here are a few of the high-lights:

Afilly tracing back to one of Mata-mata’s most world-famous mareshas put Murray Baker’s name onthe J Swap Contractors Matamata Breed-ers’ Stakes honours board for a secondtime. It took 27 years for Murray (an inducteeinto the New Zealand Racing Hall of Famelast year) to enjoy his second taste of suc-cess in the country’s most important two-year-old fillies’ event and there was causefor jubilation after Aretha scraped homein the Group Two $100,000 feature lastSaturday. Murray won the Breeders’ Stakes(1200m) back in 1988 with Kate’s Myth,an Australian-bred filly who went into therace with a record of four wins and a thirdin five starts. But this time it was a filly justhaving her second start who captured thehonours. And to think Aretha traces backto Horlicks, one of New Zealand’s greateststayers.Aretha is raced by her Cambridgebreeder, Greg McCarthy and is from theunraced Stravinsky mare Tsikory, whowas bred by Graham de Gruchy, theowner-breeder of Horlicks (yet anothermember of the New Zealand Racing Hall ofFame). Horlicks, the third dam of Aretha, was trained at Matamata by Dave and PaulO’Sullivan and showed her class on the in-ternational stage when, in the hands ofLance O’Sullivan, she won the 1989 JapanCup in a world record time for the 2400m.Horlicks won a total of 17 races, includ-ing five Group Ones, and over $4 millionin prizemoney. Among her best NewZealand wins were the two editions ofEllerslie’s $1 million DB Draught Classicand as a broodmare she hit the interna-tional headlines when her son Brew won

the 2000 Melbourne Cup for Matamata’sMike Moroney. Aretha is linked to Horlicks throughLatte, a half-sister to Brew, AvondaleGuineas winner Bubble and the GroupOne Australian Derby winner Fiumicino.Latte had just three starts for two secondsand a fourth and one of those seconds wasat Pukekohe 17 years ago when shechased home Ethereal, who went on to be-come the last New Zealand-trained win-ner of the Melbourne Cup whencompleting the 2001 Caulfield – Mel-bourne Cup double. With such a staying pedigree, breedingbuffs would expect Aretha to be better-suited with more distance and more time, but here she is as a late summer two-year-old winning one of the best juvenile raceson the NZ racing calendar.Aretha is not only the first stakeswinnerfor Charm Spirit, but also the first winnerfor Windsor Park Stud’s shuttle sire, andit’s through long-time Windsor Park em-ployee Steve Till that Greg has bred thelatest J. Swap Matamata Breeders’ Stakeswinner.‘’It’s thanks to Steve Till that I’ve bredAretha,’’ said Greg. ‘’Steve sourced themare (Tsikory) for me. Unfortunately Ilost her through a pedal bone issue lastyear – she couldn’t be saved. But I stillhave two fillies from the family.’’Greg has been racing and breedinghorses for many years. He has eightbroodmares and winners he has raced in-clude Sabbatrical (four wins) and Mrs Tit-tlemouse (five wins). But all have beenovershadowed by last Saturday’s result.“This is my best result in 30 years,’’ hesaid. Greg is quick to pay credit to Murray

and his training partner, Andrew Fors-man, and rider Jonathan Riddell for theirhandling of Aretha, who won her two tri-als before finishing third on debut in theGroup Two Wakefield Challenge Stakes atTrentham behind Aotea Lad, who wasrunner-up in the Karaka Million 2YO andagain in last Saturday’s Waikato SlipperTrial. Murray and Andrew hatched a planearly in the season to have Aretha on handfor the J Swap Contractors MatamataBreeders’ Stakes.‘’It had always been the target, but ithasn’t been easy getting here,’’ said An-drew. ‘’She was shinsore after her first

start and she had a few weeks off. She hasbeen feeling the ground, but the easing ofthe track helped her. We got her here thenit was down to Jonathan. She was drawnone so I said not to panic, just use the drawand stick to the fence, and he rode herbeautifully.’’After trailing third, Aretha camethrough on the inside and got the better ofthe leader Rainbow Dash in a head-bob-bing finish, scoring by a nose with three-quarters of a length to the JacobMcKay-trained Aalaalune, who producedan eye-catching finish for third.Wally O’Hearn.

Jonathan Riddell is pictured returning to scale.

Five-time Group One winner Melody Belle, the star ofMatamata’s Te Akau Racing Stables, has stampedherself as the logical winner of this season’s NZHorse of the Year award and also completed a piece ofNew Zealand racing history for top big-race jockey OpieBosson.Though the NZ Thoroughbred Racing Awards are obvi-ously not held until after the season ends on July 31,Melody Belle has already done enough to earn thesupreme title, having won four Group One races so far thisterm as well as a Group Two and been third in a GroupOne,. The latest of those major triumphs came at Otaki lastSaturday in the $200,000 Haunui Farm WFA Group OneClassic (1600m) and that victory enabled Opi to make aclean sweep of all the Group One races in New Zealandand maintain an unbeaten record on Melody Belle.“I enjoyed that race,’’ said Opie. “It’s the only Group Onein New Zealand that I hadn’t won. To get the whole lot, I’mquite proud. I haven’t ridden in it that often because it al-ways clashes with Matamata. To be on a quality mare likeher I knew I was in with a big chance.”Opie’s two previous rides on Melody Belle had resultedin wins in the country’s richest juvenile event, the KarakaMillion, at Ellerslie in January 2017 and the Group ThreeMongolian Khan Trophy at Ellerslie 13 months ago. Immediately after winning the 2017 Karaka Million2YO, Melody Belle notched her first Group One success in

the $225,000 Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) atAwapuni then enjoyed a Group Two win first-up in Aus-tralia in May 2017 when taking the QTC Sires’ ProduceStakes.Under the guidance of trainer Jamie Richards, sheadded to her Group One haul early this season when fol-lowing a fresh-up win in the Group Two Lisa ChittickFoxbridge Plate at Te Rapa with successive victories in theGroup One Tarzino Trophy and Group One Windsor ParkPlate, both at Hastings. She then produced a huge effort for third in the Group

One Sistema Railway at Ellerslie and, though she blottedher copybook in the Group One Telegraph Handicap atTrentham, she bounced back in style when taking theGroup One BCD Group Sprint at Te Rapa.On the strength of the Te Rapa win she was the horse tobeat in last Saturday’s Haunui Farm WFA Group One Clas-sic at Otaki and despite being trapped wide throughoutshe didn’t let her supporters down, scoring by a lengthand three-quarters from Wyndspelle.“She travelled beautifully and was nicely balanced andI knew she was a good chance at the 600m,’’ said Opie.“She’s such a professional racehorse and she never knowswhen to lay down. You can put her anywhere in a race andshe goes on top of the ground and heavy tracks don’tworry her.Melody Belle was bred by Marie Leicester and boughtat Karaka by David Ellis on behalf of her owners, the For-tuna Melody Belle Syndicate, for $57,500. The Otaki wintook Melody Belle’s record to 10 wins and three thirdsfrom 19 starts for earnings over $1.5 million. “If you’d said at the start of the season that she’d run inseven races, winning five of them including a Group Twoand four Group Ones, we wouldn’t have believed it,” saidFortuna Syndication manager John Galvin.“She really is amazing. She’s been the benchmark horseof the season, but you’ve still got to go out there and do it.This was really special.” Wally O’Hearn.

If recent history repeats itself, the connections of smarttwo-year-old Yourdeel could be in for Group One suc-cess at Ellerslie next month in the $200,000 SistemaStakes.Yourdeel, a son of the multiple Group One winner andexciting young sire Dundeel, raced away with the GroupThree $70,000 Waikato Stud Slipper (1200m) at Mata-mata last Saturday, scoring by six lengths from his stable-mate Aotea Lad.Prepared by Jamie Richards, Yourdeel followed in thefootsteps of another Te Akau Racing Stables star, SwordOf Osman, who was a decisive winner of the same race lastyear. And worth noting is that, Sword Of Osman went onto win the Group One Sistema Stakes (1200m) at Ellerslie. In fact the last three winners of the Matamata two-year-old colts and geldings’ feature have all followed up withsuccess in the first of the Group One races for juveniles inNew Zealand. In 2016 Te Akau Racing Stables producedHeroic Valour to win both features and a year later theLance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott-trained Summer Pas-sage completed the same double.Matt Cameron was aboard Heroic Valour when he wonthe 2016 Matamata event (then known as the Reid andHarrison Slipper) and he took the reins on Yourdeel lastSaturday. Yourdeel won his debut at Te Rapa last Decem-ber when ridden by Opie Bosson, but Matt has been

aboard in each of his three subsequent starts for a secondto stablemate Probabeel at Ellerslie and a third-equal be-hind Probabeel and Aotea Lad when giving Te Akau Rac-ing Stables a trifecta in the Karaka Million 2YO leadinginto last Saturday’s race.“He ran into a smart one (Probabeel) in his last coupleand wasn’t far off her,” said Matt. “He was drawn one thistime and down in the worst part of the track, and he hit a

flat spot coming up to the turn. But the leader kicked awaya bit and gave us a gap and once I got into him a little bithe really hit the line well. He’s looking for further, too, soit’s a good sign.”It was a big day for Matt as he rode four winners on theMatamata card, including two of the features. He won onlast year’s Group One New Zealand Derby winner Vin DeDance in the Listed Marks Ewen & Associates KaimaiStakes (2000m) and was also successful on Concert Halland Maison Roxanne.Yourdeel was one of three winners for Jamie and TeAkau Racing Stables last Saturday, the group having alsowon at Otaki in the day’s biggest event, the Haunui FarmWFA Group One Classic with Melody Belle and also withstable newcomer Sasso Corbaro.Bred by Dan Myers, Yourdeel is raced by John Norwood,Rod Preston and Chris Rutten with the latter havingbought him for $100,000 from last year’s National Year-ling Sales at Karaka. He has now earned $124,350 andholds an exciting future. “He has always shown plenty of ability, but he was a lit-tle colty in the spring,’’ said Jamie. “We decided to geldhim and turn him into a racehorse and we’re glad we did. He’s a potent galloper now and he’s going to be a hell of athree-year-old.” Wally O’Hearn.

With the 2019 Big Fish tournamentthe next biggie on the fishing cal-endar, sponsors Plumb.Co, Mata-mata Veterinary Serves, Matamata Marine,Challenge and King Electrical are encour-aging all local fishos to get out there andhave a crack. As annual sponsors of this tournament, directors of all five sponsoring businessesare keen fishermen and agree the singlemost important reason for the competitionis to encourage anyone keen on the sportof fishing to have a go. “What better way torelax and unwind than getting out on thewater with family or friends” says KenWatkinson. “Obviously the prize pool is apretty attractive lure for success but everyyear, we hear the stories of what a greattime was had, the one that got away, or justhow much a weekend’s fishing was en-joyed. Obviously we all like to bring some-thing pretty decent home for braggingrights but more than that, it’s the way to

create great memories with great mates.”With cash prizes for heaviest snapper, trout, kahawai, land-based and either ter-akihi, John Dory, gurnard or trevally, themajor cash prize is awarded to the firstheaviest in the Big Fish section with cashalso awarded to the second heaviest in thesame section. Juniors too, are well takencare of thanks to Waharoa Transport, withcash being awarded to the best junior boyand girl in two age groups: 0-9yrs and 10-16yrs.“Now, important to remember” saysMatamata Fishing Club President, ChrisBungard, “you can fish on the Friday, start-ing at 5pm Thursday evening for game fishcategories. All other fish must be caughtnot before 5pm on the Friday and over theweekend as per normal. Of course you cancatch the game fish on any of the threedays. You may have heard many of ourmembers have been right amongst the bigfish recently. Sue Baker tagged and re-

leased a magnificent Blue Marlin. ArrumAli landed his first Marlin in New Zealandwaters. Bryan Shepherd caught his firstMarlin and just to make sure, also baggeda second one on the same trip. Then, PhilStevens also caught his first Marlin outwest on his own boat with his very happycrew, Bryan Shepard, Cameron Lamas andJosh Bungard.”“The last thing we want is for people tothink the Big Fish tournament is only forthe game fishers” says Dave Harris. “Aslong as you’re a member of Matamata Fish-ing Club, just get out there, have fun andregardless of what you bring home, beready to share some great stories and havea good time. Most of us don’t get the op-portunity to get out on the water as oftenas we’d like so what better excuse than tohook up the boat, load up the chilly bin andhead out with the crew.”Caron Stewart.

Do YOU have what it takes?

Representing two of the five businesses who annually sponsor the Big Fish Tournament, Dave Harris (Challenge Matamata) and Ken Watkin-son (Matamata Marine) congratulate the top three prize winners Daryl Conder, Craig Arden and Logan Craw at the 2018 Big Fish Tournament.Do you have what it takes to scoop the prize pool this year?

In Race One (Gross event)Mark Carter came home by a nose, col-lecting the Robert Harris voucher, whileRob Colley and Lyall Wilson came inwith the place. Race Two (Par) sawAmarjit Singh-Ghag romp home by alength, and pick up the Redoubt Bar andEatery voucher, from Bruce Romley andGerard O’Neill, who took the place posi-tions. Race Three (Stableford). SawSteady Eddie, Murray Eddington, onceagain bolt in with an easy trot to the line, claiming the Sen Sushi voucher, whileGlenn Rowsell and Bluey Howell pickedup the place. In the main event, RaceFour (Nett) Ian (Monk) Taylor left thefield behind with a barnstorming 63 towin this race, as well as the Robert Har-ris Golfer of the Week, ahead of AdrianJoe and Chris Hodgkinson. Rob Colley

claimed the Sen Sushi nearest the pin, while Ian Taylor, Murray Eddington,Adrian Joe and Murray Davidson allscored twos for a couple of balls each. The Joker wasn’t struck and will jackpotto next week.

5. Robert Harris Golfer of the Week win-ner, Ian Taylor, as cool as a cucumberafter a stunning 63 nett.February 17 saw the start of Champi-onship Pennants kick off for 2019, Fol-lowing the success of 2018, theMatamata team came up against twovery competitive teams, in Riverside andHamilton, who were both keen to taketheir revenge for the 2018 result. Firstup, a very strong Riverside team claimeda 5-1 victory over Matamata, with JackTrower being the only win in the match.Nathaniel Cassidy, Kurtis Cortesi, TimNeill, Lyall Wilson and Mark (Higgy) Hig-ginson competed well, but were alledged out by strong opponents. In the af-ternoon match, against Hamilton, allplayers were even more competitive, with all matches going to the wire. Un-fortunately Nathaniel, Kurtis, Tim andLyall were pipped at the post, whileHiggy claimed a halved match againstHamilton’s Andrew Swetman, and JackTrower claiming his second victory ofthe day, over Hamilton’s James Fellows-Ford. With 2 losses from 2 games, in are-jigged format, it makes the roadahead for MTH Matamata very steep in-deed. The next matches are scheduledfor Sunday the 3rd of March at theThames Golf Course. The Division 4 teamhad greater success with a 4-2 win overRaglan, and narrowly going downagainst close neighbours Walton, 2-4.Matamata are sitting around middle ofthe table, and have an opportunity tostrike in rounds 3 and 4, scheduled forSunday 17 March, at the Hauraki GolfClub, where they will take on Tau-marunui and Coromandel.

The Vietnam List – NZ in Vietnam1964-75: Mention in Despatches(MID) Richard John Metcalfe 81177.Flight Lieutenant Royal NZ Air Force. Att11th Armd Cav Regiment (US). NZ Gazettedated 31 July 1970.Flight Lieutenant Metcalfe served withthe Tactical Control Party for the 11th Ar-moured Cavalry Regiment from May 31,1969 to November 6, 1969. During his pe-riod of service with the 19 Tactical Air Sup-port Squadron USAF in support of 11thCavalry Regiment he flew 351 combathours and controlled 101 tactical airstrikes.Throughout he displayed such a highorder of competence, aerial skill and devo-tion to duty under enemy fire that he wasconsidered by both 7th USAF and groundcommanders to be an outstanding forwardair controller. His ability to quickly analyse and quicklyrespond to a tactical situation was high-lighted by his performance near Loc Ninhon August 21, 1969. On visual reconnais-sance supporting 1 Squadron, 11th Air Cav-alry Regiment, he monitored a report thata helicopter had crashed about three milesaway after receiving ground fire. In co-op-eration with the ground commander hecontrolled two air strikes against the ma-chine-gun site which were placed only

after an airlifted recovery team had ex-tracted the deceased crew from the heli-copter. He so accurately located, markedand continued to mark the machine-gunfor the set of fighters (F100s) and secondset (F4Cs) that the machine-gun crew andfour bunkers were destroyed. In this complicated situation requiringexact timing and precise control and direc-tion of ordnance on to a pin point target,

Flight Lieutenant Metcalfe again displayedthose special qualities which have en-hanced his professional reputationthroughout his attachment to 11th CavalryRegiment. His determination, technical compe-tence, performance under fire and contin-uing devotion to duty, reflected great creditupon himself and the Royal New ZealandAir Force.

Hi! Nice to have a bit of rain in the dis-trict but a bit more would have seenwelcome relief for the farming sector, and our gardens! The local streams haven’t been affectedby the rain so are still running low and clear.Since we last spoke I have had a continua-tion of good reports from locals venturingout onto our local streams. You know, weare really gifted around this region withfishing opportunities. The evening insectflight is running hot and if you get out afterwork I think you will be impressed with therise of trout. In the Rotorua area the streammouth fishing on Lake Rotorua has pickedup. Local guide in the region, Glen Skinner, tells me of some very nice evening catchesby his clients. Glen also made a real point ofmentioning the good results he is having jig-ging on Lake Rotoiti and Tarawera. To the south to Taupo, the big lake is per-forming quite well. For those prepared to

make the effort to drag their bodies out ofbed early are doing well with the earlymorning harling. While the fish aren’t huge, the condition of them is well worth noting.During the day the jigging is going well –once again, not huge fish but nice conditionfactor. On the rivers and streams there con-tinues to be reasonable numbers of trout inresidence. I have had good reports fromloads on the Waituanui and the Tau-ranga/Taupo. They have also commentedon the fact that there is some very nicebrowns in the rivers at the moment. To the sea. If you want to catch a marlinat the moment then head west. Howevermake sure you have a boat suited to the job– all the better if two of you go. DwaydePinny tells me the snapper fishing is goingwell out there too. Fish in about 50 to 55mof water.Up to the Coromandel. Last week I talkedabout the big tides and the extra water flow

that they create. This week the tides aresmaller so I suggest you would be good inthe outer farms. Get there early in the morn-ing and fish the last hour or two of the out-going tide and then the first of the incoming. All the reports I have had coming in are thatthe fishing up there is very good. UMS helda fishing comp up there last week and ev-eryone did very well.Over the ranges to the Mercury Bay areaand a lot of attention is on the outer waters.Yes, the game fish have arrived in goodnumbers. There seems to be a good numberof bait fish along to 100 to 150m line be-tween Red Merc and the Alderman’s. Lastweek the Great Barrier Island Game Clubheld a comp and there was over 30 marlincaught. Local man Greg Stitchbury caught anice striped marlin last week and was veryunlucky not to back it up with a blue marlin.Unfortunately the blue got off after a 35minbattle. Yes, sometimes the fish wins! An-

other heartbreak was on-board Ocean Ad-dict, owned and skippered by Matt Dalton. They were out over the Penguin Rise in theBay of Plenty and hooked up a very rareblack marlin. His crew was his two brothersin law, Ben and Troy. Unfortunately after abattle to get it to the boat the fish had otherideas and they lost it. Bad luck team – agreat experience though. On the snapperscene over in the Bay there is a few niceones around at the moment. VaughanMitchell was out at Motiti last week andguided Joanne Turner McKee onto a beauti-ful near 20lb snapper fishing on the goodship Leander. They were on foul ground offthe western side of Motiti in about 20m ofwater – well done team, nice fish. Also, con-gratulations to Hayden Begovich. Last weekhe tagged and released a nice striped marlinoff the back of Mayor Island. Nice work.Happy fishing, Bungey.
