MERCY CORNER Starting with the merciful love through which Jesus expressed God’s commitment, we too can and must reciprocate his love with our commitment, and do so above all in serious situations of need, where there is a greater thirst for hope. For example, our commitment to forsaken people, to those who have severe disabilities, to the most seriously ill, to the dying, to those who are unable to express grati-tude…. In all these situations we convey God’s mercy through life-giving commitment, which wit-nesses to our faith in Christ. We must always bring God’s tender caress — because God has caressed us with his mercy — bringing it to others, to those who are in need, to those who have anguish in their hearts or are sad: approach them with God’s caress, which is the same that he gave to us.

September 8, 2019 - 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time “Everyone of you who does not renounce all his posses-sions cannot be my disciple.” (Luke 14:33) When we first hear this statement, it seems that Jesus is making an unrealistic demand upon us. How can we re-nounce all of our possessions? We need them to live. However, what we must renounce is the belief that they belong to us. Everything that we have belongs to God alone. All of our resources are entrusted to us not only for our own use, but also so that we can help others. Once we renounce the idea that we possess or are entitled to any-thing, it is much easier to share the many gifts that God has given us. Then we truly are His Disciples.

223rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Theme: Commitment is required to follow Jesus. Breaking Open the Word Suggested text for faith sharing: Today's Gospel Step One: Listen to the Word As you listen to the reading today, what image caught your imagination? What word or phrase struck you? Step Two: Look into Your Life Question for Children: J esus says that in order to be one of his followers, we must be close to him. When do you feel closest to Jesus? Question for Youth: J esus tells his disciples that they must renounce their possessions in order to be His disciple. If you had to, could you leave everything behind to be with God? What would hold you back? How much of a struggle would it be? Question for Adults: Today's Gospel is demanding. How do you as a modern man or woman "denounce your posses-sions?" What does this mean for you?

CCD Registration Forms for the Fall, 2019 Session, beginning September 8th, can be found in the back of Church and on-line.

We will explore this ten week course on the character of St. Peter. Bringing together biblical accounts, historical evidence, Church teaching, classical art, and personal insights.

Weekly Reflection September 8, 2019 Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson

Aesop’s famous tale of the Tortoise and the Hare is deliberately ambig-uous as to its meaning. You remember how it goes. A hare constantly ridicules a slow moving tortoise of his acquaintance. Tired of the hare’s arrogant behavior, the tortoise challenges the hare to a race. The hare soon leaves the tortoise behind, and confident of winning, he takes a nap midway through the race. When he wakes up, however, he finds that his competitor, crawling slowly but steadily, has arrived at the finish line before him. Here is the problem. Does Aesop want us simply to admire the tortoise for taking on a bully, or does he want us to learn something from the hare’s foolish over confidence? As far as Jesus’ take would be, I’ll go “out on a limb” and declare that He would want us to take both ideas from the fable. That means He would win against an overly confident Satan in this “race” we call our lives enroute to a promised heaven. But He would also want us to learn that attaining heaven for most of us involves a slow, steady day in and day out adherence to His teachings. Let us admit that the devil often acts like the hare. He’ll mock us, or at least try to make us feel silly and inept; out of sync with the majority of people for our misguided choice of following Christ. The devil knows that we usually prefer the easy way out of any challenges life throws at us. So he provides an outlet, which inevitably involves some form of evil. Of course, he will make our choice appear to be the right one. In today’s First Reading, we hear King Solomon praying for wisdom, as he knew from experience that our bodily nature makes us weak and vulnerable. What he would not know in his time is that this “wisdom” he seeks is called “the Holy Spirit.” As time goes by, and all of us go through the effects of our ebbing bodily strength, the mental burden of past failures mixing in with our relatively few successes, we more fre-quently doubt, and ask ourselves “Is that all there is?” or “Is being Christian worth it?” This is especially perplexing when we look from side to side and note that a lot of people who have no connection to Christ, sometimes blatantly disobeying His laws, seem to be doing quite well in life. They’re more “hare” than “tortoise”, seemingly on their way to certain victory, even if they never nap! What’s the antidote for our malaise? There are many. But the best seems to be paying attention to people who have reached the goal of heav-en. They are the saints. None of them got to where they are without a struggle of some kind. Look them up on your favorite internet device. Google their names and learn their biographies. If this were not a Sun-day, we would be celebrating the birthday of the first and greatest of Our Lord’s disciples: His Mother Mary. Being the most well-known saint, in fact the Queen of the Saints, we know her life to be anything but an easy one. That her commitment to her Son was anything but casual or flimsy. That she was never caught figuratively “napping” along the way, or had any trace of “hare like” over confidence in her ability. Rather she knew that all her strength came from God. “My soul magnifies the Lord,” she told her cousin Elizabeth. “My spirit rejoices in God my savior.” Further naming herself as “a lowly servant” displays a mind and heart replete with humility. And if we add to that St. John’s breath-taking line read out to us every Good Friday: “Now there stood by the cross of Jesus Mary His Mother” we get to see where her strength took her and how it showed. In one sense, she “knew her place.” And for that, she won the race of her life, becoming most fit for heaven to be its Queen. And that, my friends, is no fable.

September 8, 2019 Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Saint of the Week St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153)

In his sermons Bernard bares his soul. On one occasion he confided: “All night long my heart was hot within me, and the fire burned during my medication as I was preparing the delicacies I am about to serve you! I speak of the fire that the Lord Jesus came to kindle upon the earth. For, to prepare spiritual food there must be a spiritual kitchen and a spiritual fire. Now, I have only to distribute to you what I have prepared. But consider the God who gives rather than the minister who distributes. For I am only your servant who, God knows, begs the bread of heaven and the food of life for myself and for you. Please God, that I may be a faithful cook and that my soul may be a useful kitch-en!” (Sermon for the Feast of All Saints, 1,2-3) Bernard believed that “humans need personal experience of God.” Scripture supplies many texts which emphasize the need for personal contact with God in the transformation of the soul.” His habitual style was what we would call the “homily”, a word that simply means “conversation” or informal talk, on a given Bibli-cal text. Before Bernard’s time the homily had been the only method known and practiced by the great orators of the Patristic era. Bernard followed in the footsteps of St. Augustine. Like Augustine, he was given to a certain refinement of expression, without affectation or exaggera-tion, however. For it is obvious that he never sought to produce an effect. What he wanted was to catch his audience, hold its attention, and make his words penetrate into the minds, indeed, the hearts of his hearers.

St. Bernard Pray For Us … Amen

SEPTEMBER 8, 2019 TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE AN AMBASSADOR? We Christians are followers of Christ. We have been baptized into a discipleship of Jesus. We, too, are his ambassadors. There are people who will be part of our lives this week, who may only come to know Jesus and his love for them because of the way we touch their lives. Be an ambassador for Christ. Invite them to join us at an Inquiry Session. Inquiry sessions DO NOT assume a commitment to join the Catholic Faith fami-ly. Inquiry sessions are opportunities to ask questions about God, Jesus, the Catholic Faith. All who are un-baptized, baptized into another faith denomination, or baptized Catholic but have not received Eucharist or Confirmation, are invited. Inquiry sessions are for those who wish to inquire, explore, and search for ways to grow in relationship with God. For more information, call RCIA at 609-397-3350 ext. 3.
