It’s the start of a new school year and the clubs here at DCHS are kicking off the year with new members and fun activities, all while helping students find something they love to do as well as making new friends along the way. A Few New Staff Members at DCHSby Morgan Snyder

Ciao Lucia!by Bailey Harward

How would you like to leave your family and study at a school across seas? This year’s foreign exchange student did just that! Lucia Bardelli is a junior this year who has came all the way from Italy. She is staying with Kami Shutter currently and will be attending Davis County until January. Talking to Lucia, I have found that she admires traveling and adores culture, which inspired her to join the program, even though it’s not always easy. When Lucia came to Iowa she was taking on the chal-lenge of not seeing her family for an extended amount of time. She also had to figure how our school systems work and further her study of Eng-lish. A big difference was our schooling. In Lucia’s school you attend a school of subject. Meaning you can choose the school of science, math, literature, and so on. Lucia was in the school of science where she stayed in one room the whole day and learned from one teacher. Where here we are constantly changing from class to class. However at Lucia’s school, they do have an English program similar to our Spanish class which helped Lucia prepare for her time at Davis County. In her time here Lucia is excited to become involved in a few clubs and sports. She is playing volleyball and has signed up for drama and speech club. She was also very interested in our prom. Unfortunately boys, she’s not a date up for grabs because of her departure in January. But if you come across her in the halls don’t be shy, say hello. Or even say Ciao!

Mrs. Johnson has worked for the Davis County School District for the past 12 years. She started out working in the old high school from 2005-2009 and then moved to the elementary to be a secretary. She is married to Jeff and has one daughter Riley who is a Junior this year. She lives on a farm north of Moulton where she has cows, horses and corgi puppies. In her free time she likes to sing, horseback ride, kayak, and go on walks. Mrs. Johnson’s favor-ite thing about Davis County is the people because everyone is very good to work with and genuine. If she could change one thing about the world she would want everyone to learn to love and get along with each other.

Mrs. Banks just graduated from Iowa State and has accepted her first job here at Davis County High School teaching math. She is also the student council advisor. She cur-rently lives in Centerville and just got mar-ried to her husband Tanner three months ago. In her free time she likes spending time with her husband and their cows. She also teaches dance one night a week. Part of the reason she wanted to teach at DCHS is because of the really good things she heard about the respectful kids and helpful staff. Her favorite thing about the school so far is that there are so many clubs available to students. If Mrs. Banks could change one thing about the world it would be having no such thing as being mean to one another.

Mrs. Heckart is from Ottumwa and has lived there for the past 30 years. She has two daughters Hannah, who is in pre-school, and Henley, who is getting ready to turn one. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends, scrapbook-ing, watching movies, and traveling in her free time. She wanted to teach at Da-vis County because of how close every-one is and how everyone comes together as a team and she wanted to be a part of that team. She also loves our school spirit. If she could change one thing about the world it would be for everyone to be able to be open minded and accept other people for who they are.
