OwnerBonkoski Lawn Care 17. My name is Jim Bonkoski, and I reside in Carpentersville. I am thevice president of the Dundee Township Park District board and Iam also on the school board at Immanuel Lutheran School in EastDundee. I have two children, Maddie who is 11 and Jack who is 10.I, along with my father, own and operate Bonkoski Lawn Care, inEast Dundee. We are a lawn and landscape maintenance companyserving East and West Dundee, Sleepy Hollow, Algonquin, Elgin, and Carpentersville. After graduating from college I worked in Oak Brook, Illinois for acompany called Barter Corp. It was a business to business tradeexchange. I coordinated and brokered trades of goods and servicesbetween the over 3000 companies that were members. I workedthere until 1999, when I went into business full time with my fatherin the landscape business. 18. I am a 1988 graduate of Dundee Crown High School, anda 1992 graduate of Iowa State University. I graduatedwith a Business Administration degree, with a major inFinance 19. The skill set that is necessary to be a successful landscaper,is the same basic skill set required to be successful in anysmall business. You need a passion and a dedication forwhat you do. You need organizational skills, knowingwhat needs to get done and when you have to do it. Also, you need to have your employees organized. You need tomaximize their productivity when they are working foryou. You need communication skills, to generate newsales and revenue, as well as for customer service. 20. A typical day depends on what time of year it is.But, a majority of our business is lawn andlandscape maintenance. So during a typicalweek, we will have a full mowing scheduleMonday-Friday. Most days are started between6-6:30am, loading equipment and gettingorganized for the day. Depending on the timeof year, once mowing is completed for the day, there are other jobs and projects that need to becompleted. Examples of those might be mulchinstallation, trimming bushes, applyingfertilizer, and spraying weeds. 21. During the heavy parts of the season, there is atremendous time commitment involved with thisjob. April-July, depending on the weather, caneasily average out to 70 hours a week. As far asworking conditions go, some days are certainlyeasier than others. A majority of the time, theweather dictates our working conditions. The thingabout the landscape business is that you knowwhen your busiest, and most lucrative, time of theyear is and you just become accustomed to workinglong hours during those months. 22. The biggest thing I love about my career is I thoroughly enjoy what I do. I enjoy being ableto work outside all year. I enjoy being my own boss, and being responsible for the success ofmy business. After being able to work outside and be my own boss for the last 15 years, Idont know if I could ever go back to an office and work for someone else.Typical challenges involve revenue streams. Always trying to expand our customer base. Not only expand it, but maximize the revenue from those sources. Another challenge iscompetition. Like any business, there is a lot of competition in the landscape industry, andwe have to be able to set ourselves apart from the competition, whether its price, customerservice, or a higher quality of work. Also, another challenge that we face is weather related. If we have a hot and dry summer, it can severely affect our companys revenues for the year.It can be very frustrating, because that is something that is completely out of your control. But another challenge is to build your business so you are able to sustain those periodswithout a complete loss of revenue. Over the years we have been able to build our businessto lessen the severity of the loss of revenue that those conditions may cause. 23. Founder/OwnerEmmetts Brewing Company 24. My Background? Project confidence with your decisions Adapt to the situation Be creative, use innovative ideas Your word and actions are your reputation 56. What does a typical day in your job look like? Yourcommute, travel, meetings, tasks, etc. There is no typical day in my business and that is why preparationis absolutely crucial.Office Day:Team Meeting (once per week)Reach out to my Field Supervisors to go over critical issues or newcompetitive promotions that need attentionDiscuss current business climate, what is working and what is not.Find solutionsSales analysis by Account (are accounts meeting expectations? if not, what can be done)Email consumes a lot of my time. Sometimes not articulating youranswer can lead to multiple exchanges, I find that a personal phonecall can accomplish in 5 minutes what sometimes takes up to 4exchanges (8 emails) to accomplish. 57. Travel Day:Customer MeetingPrepare a list of what needs to be accomplished at the meeting.Send the meeting agenda in advanced to everyoneparticipating. Many of my customers are close enough to drive to but someaccounts require air travel and overnight stay (make sure travelarrangements are made before the trip to avoid complications). Not all meeting can take place during regular business hourssometimes meetings can take place in the evening so dinner andentertainment is expected by clientsInternational travel is sometimes required, my travels havetaken me to Japan, China, England, Australia, Latin America. 58. Time commitment, working conditions, level of stress, work-life balance, pay Location Home office twice a week, travel to different customer sites (Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois,Michigan, Indianapolis and Ohio) remainder of the week. Hours During Peak Season, October December, it is common to work 40-60 hour weeks and very common towork weekends during this period. Levels of stress can become high during peak seasons when competition is more fierce, this is when a hobby, playingsports, working out and having family time becomes important. Balancing family time and work time. Successful Professionals spend many hours working but that time needs to be balanced with family and friends. My personal formula for balancing my Career and Family life is: Breakfast with kids before dropping them off at school Create a To Do List and stick to it. When working Home Office, shut computer down at 5:00 pm and dont check email until the next morning. Dinner with my family Email is evil, pick up the phone and you can accomplish things faster. On the road Organization and planning will make life and work easier Plan your meetings to get the most out of your visit If the meeting is not absolutely necessary, dont waste your time or your customers time. Liked English, history and science. The most beneficial of all was English, if you can not communicate and express yourthoughts on paper you are going to have a very short lived career in business. Was your path into this career typical? (i.e. Do you have a unique story about how you got into this field? See above. Everything happens for a reason. What is the projected job market? There are always jobs in Business (Sales, Marketing, Inventory Management, Logistics) What you need to understand is that you need to build your experience sometimes it means taking an entry levelposition to gain that job qualification, no one starts at a CEO position (unless daddy happens to own the company) youneed to work to earn that position. The subjects I most liked to study in school were History andMath.Finding a career that you enjoy doing sometimes takes sometime. I always enjoyed working outside and being my own boss. But sometimes its hard to envision making a career andsupporting a family doing something that basically used to be mysummer job. When my father expanded the business in 1999,and asked me to join him the timing seemed right.I would say I did not take a typical path to my career in business.Figuring out what you want to do, what makes you happiest, sometimes takes a few turns before you get there. The degree Ihave from Iowa State is something that can never be taken awayfrom me. And even though a lot of what I do is physical labor, Istill rely heavily upon my business administration and financeback round every day that I go to work. 71. falkdsjflajd 72.
