Dear Kenji,
The fun activities continue in Jefferson Park this weekend.
I hope you get to enjoy some great music during Rock theBadges, a battle-of-the-bands competition betweenChicago Police Department and Chicago F ire Departmentbands. Proceeds benefit the families of fallen officers andfirefighters.
The fundraiser is Saturday, Sept. 7, at 5 pm, at theCopernicus Center, 5216 W. Lawrence. More informationand tickets are at the Rock the Badges website.
Speed Cameras at JeffersonMemorial Park
Late last week, I received word fromthe Mayor's Office thatthey intend to install speed cameras at twolocations adjacent to Jefferson Memorial Park. (Find the fulllist of sites at the city's website.)
I oppose the installation of these cameras and was notconsulted on their placement.
Last year during hearings on the speed camera program, mayoral appointees said that aldermen would be consultedbefore camera locations were finalized, and no cameras
would be installed without aldermanic approval. Thatcommitment has not been honored.
As you might recalled, I voted against the ordinanceauthorizing the speed camera program. I continue tooppose it. There are many other ways to slow traffic andmake our streets safe for pedestrians, bicyclists, and otherdrivers. This program, allowing the cameras near parks andschools, seems to me to be another attempt to raiserevenue.
I'm additionally confused by the proposed location of thesespecific cameras. The camera at 5435 W. Higgins isbetween the stop sign at Linder and the stop light atMilwaukee. The camera at 5439 W. Lawrence is close thenewly-installed stoplight at Lawrence and Long.
The cameras will both be positioned to monitor east-boundtraffic and are expected to be active between 6 am and 11pm. After their installation, there is a 30-day grace periodwhere only warnings are issued. Tickets fromdrivingbetween 6 and 10 mph over the limit are $35. Tickets for11 mph or more over the limit are $100.
Many of you have contacted my office to object to the useof this enforcement tool without first exploring other, lessintrusive tools. I have requested a briefing with the ChicagoDepartment of Transportation, after which I will host apublic forum and invite CDOT to address the community'sconcerns.
I will continue to fight against the placement of thesecameras in our community.
Fringe Fest Continues
Chicago Fringe Festival continues this weekend with awide variety ofwell-reviewedperformances. The well-regardedperforming arts festival runs t hrough Sunday,Sept. 8.
This fest, with half of the shows presented by localperformers, is just one of the reasons some are callingJefferson Park the city's newest theater district . In the firstweekend, more than 2,000 people came to the festival, andover $20,000 in ticket sales have been generated andreturned directly to the performers..
The shows are spread between seven small venuescentered around Lawrence and Milwaukee. Tickets andshow descriptions are at the Fringe Festival website.
Each show is $10, plus the one-time purchase of a $5button. Multi-show packs are available. Hope to see youthere.
