WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

*CALL TO WORSHIP

*OPENING PRAYER

*HYMN OF PRAISE NO. 71 “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty”

+++

CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION (in unison) We are workers, God, just like you. But we confess that our work is not always done in a manner that affirms and honors each other. Our work is not always done in a spirit that is pleasing to you. We confess that, on some occasions, we have blindly bought goods made by people who are paid too little or work in unsafe conditions. We admit that we have failed to end an unjust system in which some workers have jobs that provide good wages and benefits while others may have no job, or one that pays little and provides few benefits. Creator God, help us to be your people, working for a world where all workers are valued. A world where all workers everywhere share in the abundance that you have given us. (Silence for personal confession)

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

RESPONSIVE SONG NO. 455 “Take Thou Our Minds, Dear Lord” (vs. 1, 4)

Take thou our minds, dear Lord, we humbly pray; give us the mind of Christ each passing day; teach us

to know the truth that sets us free; grant us in all our thoughts to honor thee. Take thou ourselves, O

Lord, heart, mind, and will; through our surrendered souls thy plans fulfill. We yield ourselves to thee-

time, talents, all; we hear, and henceforth heed, thy sovereign call.

SCRIPTURE LESSON Genesis 2:2-3

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD’S PRAYER (unison)

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

OFFERING OUR GIFTS TO GOD (Members and Visitors, please take this time to sign and pass our friendship pads which are located in the book rack of your pew.)

SCRIPTURE LESSON 2 Timothy 2:1-7

SERMON “Teaching Discipleship: Soldier, Farmer, Athlete” Rev. Anne Schaefer AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I Believe

I believe in truth as a living reality, not captured in theory or a creed, but revealed to those who love; the truth of Jesus, the Spirit of truth, the truth of God.

Because I believe I trust, not blindly but open eyed and bold as a child climbing into a mother’s lap; the truth of Jesus, the Spirit of truth, the truth of God. Because I believe I serve, not as a slave that serves a tyrant but like farmers reaping a harvest; the truth of Jesus, the Spirit of truth, the truth of God.

Calling All Gardeners (and shoppers!) Once again we have the opportunity to help families within our community by donating fresh fruits and vegetables to Northville Civic Concern. If your garden has an abundant crop, please consider sharing. Whatever you bring in and leave on the produce stand in the Narthex will be delivered to Civic Concern. Each week they donate groceries and produce to local families that may otherwise go without. If you do not have a garden but would like to contribute, store bought produce is also accepted. The Local Mission committee is so thankful for your generosity. We will be collecting produce through the end of September.

The Gospel According to Paul, by John MacArthur Join this 8-week Bible Study, Tuesday Evenings in the Chapel

7:15 to 9:00 p.m., Tuesdays from September 19 to November 7, 2017 The subtitle of this new book by John MacArthur, published in 2017, is “Embracing The Good News at the Heart of Paul’s Teachings.” Unlike the rest of the apostles, Paul never spent time with Jesus during Christ’s earthly ministry. However, he defended the authority and purity of the gospel: “I am appointed for the defense of the gospel of God.”

MacArthur writes, “Gospel truth permeates everything Paul ever wrote.”

Join in reading and discussing topics, including Things of First Importance, How Can a Person be Right with God, Alive Together with Christ, and The Lessons of Grace.

Sign up on the bulletin board next to the elevator on the first floor.

Copies of the book (cost $13) will be available at the first class on Tuesday, September 19.

Questions? Please contact Roger Cromwell ([email protected]) or Nancy White ([email protected]).

WEDNESDAY MORNING WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY

AMP - A Morning’s Peace & W3 – Women in the Word on Wednesdays

Twelve More Women of the Bible Study Guide: Life-Changing Stories for Women Today by Sherry Harney

September 13 – November 15, 2017 (10 weeks) Cost: $15 (Materials & Study Guide)

This Bible study is for women of all ages and is structured to meet once a week for 10 consecutive sessions. We will look at the spiritual lessons learned from ten women in the Bible and what they mean for us today. You will look at these women’s successes and failures, see how they drew near to God in the midst of trials, and learn how they overcame rejection and disappointment. Their stories will inspire us to persevere through difficult times and find joy in the hope that Jesus has provided. This 10-week Study Guide provides reflective questions to be answered between sessions. A DVD lesson is shown in class each week with small group discussion to follow. Class meets from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. with free childcare. Contact: Rev. Emily Campbell ([email protected]) or Sue Kage ([email protected]) or register online at: http://fpcp.net/grow/adults/wednesday-morning-womens-bible-study Additionally, you may sign up on the Life Long Learning bulletin board by the elevator. Please register by September 10th.

Life Long Learning

Do you sometimes…feel a little jealous of someone else’s abilities? Do you feel inferior to others, like

you just don’t measure up to the standards of this world? A friend sings much better than you, another friend can

grow tomatoes in abundance while you seem to have a black thumb, another bakes “killer” chocolate chip cookies

–yours always seem to burn on the bottom, etc. Consider Romans 12:6. “We have different gifts; according to the

grace given us...let us use them.” We shouldn’t feel bad about ourselves because we’re not able to do what

someone else can do. God made us different from everyone else to fulfill the desire of HIS heart…and He promises

to give us the desires of our hearts too. (See Psalm 37:4) Let us worship Him with our God-given gifts and talents,

and enjoy ourselves.

Learn more; join a Bible Study. Lord, I know you a little; I want to know you more. Amen.

Paraphrased from Starting Your Day Right by Joyce Meyer, p. 164
