Ron RobisonCommissionerWestern Hockey League

Greetings from the WHL

A Welcome from the President

Welcome back to another exciting year of Kootenay ICE Hockey. With the way the Hockey Club finished last year the 2013-2014 season has the potential to be very special. Mirrored in last place at Christmas, the Club posted the fifth best record in the WHL in the second half of the season and made the playoffs for a 15th straight year, while finishing with a .500 or better record for a 14th consecutive season (which are both the longest active streaks in the WHL).

Our organization has been very fortunate since moving to Cranbrook to enjoy an unparalleled amount of on ice success. This year for the first time in franchise history one of our players has the potential to be the first overall selection in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. With that comes added pressure to perform, but with reigning WHL Coach of the Year, Ryan McGill leading our team, Sam Reinhart and the rest of the players will receive the necessary guidance and leadership in achieving all of their goals.

With the invaluable experience our team gained last season, we expect our returning players along with our new prospects to once again battle for contention in the very competitive Eastern Conference. Our expectations of success both on and off the ice will not change. Our fans have come to expect a team that is hard working on the ice and ambassadors for Cranbrook and the entire East Kootenay region off the ice.

On behalf of the entire organization, welcome back and I hope you enjoy the game.

Jeff Chynoweth, President & Governor

TONIGHT’S OPPONENTHead-to-Head:The Regina Pats (1-3-0-0) and Kootenay Ice (1-2-0-0) meet for the first time in 2013-14 season. The Ice won three of four games against the Pats in 2012-13, splitting the contests in Kootenay and winning both games in Regina. Kyle Burroughs led return-ing Pats with two points (both assists) against the Ice last season. 2014 NHL Draft Prospect Sam Reinhart led the Ice with six points (3G, 3A) in four games. Heading into tonight’s game, the Pats are 1-1 on their current road swing after a loss in Red Deer. Meanwhile, Kootenay picked up its first win of the season with a shootout victory over the Lethbridge Hurricanes yesterday evening. Tonight’s game can be heard on 620 CKRM starting at 6:35 p.m.Lead Up:Pats Drop 4-1 Decision to RebelsComing off a successful night in Edmonton, the Pats offence struggled to gain traction in Red Deer. The Rebels got goals from Conner Bleackley and Rhyse Dieno in the first and that would be all they needed for the win. Chandler Stephenson scored the Pats’ lone goal while Matt Bellerive and Grayson Pawlenchuk added markers of their own for the Rebels. Rookie goaltender Taz Burman stopped 16 of 17 shots for the win while Dawson MacAuley made 23 saves in the loss.Shorthanded Turnaround:Through the Pats first two games of the season, the penalty kill sat at an unimpressive 50%. Over the next two games, the pen-alty kill made a quick turnaround, killing off 10/11 opportunities (90.9%) and scoring two shorthanded goals. The Pats overall percentage on the penalty kill sits at 71.4%.Top Line Clicking:The Pats’ top line (Klimchuk, Stephenson, Stevenson) was united in the second game of the season against Swift Current. Since then, the line has combined for six goals in three games with all three players on three game point streaks.Scoring First:The Blue and White make a habit of scoring the first goal of the game. Last night’s game in Red Deer marked the first night the Pats haven’t scored the game’s opening marker after three straight games of leading off the offence.Streaks:4 – Tye Hand has a four game streak of registering at least four penalty minutes in a game3 – Chandler Stephenson is on a three game point/goal streak with four points (3G, 1A) 3 – Morgan Klimchuk is on a three game point streak with five points (2G, 3A) 3 – Dyson Stevenson is on a three game point streak with three points (1G, 2A)
