Lions member Dennis Dulniak (District 35-0, Cen-
tral Florida) got the idea to make clear face masks
from a story he saw on WFTV. Dulniak worked with a
fellow Lion to modify a standard face mask print,
adding a fog-proof window of clear plastic over the
mouth. Soon, a team of four seamstresses were
making the masks by the hundreds to pass out for
free. He says he’s already had orders from local pub-
lic schools’ special ed departments. “It’s not just the
Deaf and hearing impaired. It is the schools. It is the
hospices.”
Twelve-year-old Jocie Dagenais is Deaf and be-
fore she got her cochlear implants, she relied heavily
on lipreading for communication. That became im-
possible with standard face masks.
“I was probably missing about 60 to 75 percent
of every sentence and so it was really hard.”
Dagenais had her cochlear implant surgery during
the pandemic. The doctors and nurses were all wear-
ing facial coverings which made it hard for her to al-
ways understand what was going on.

Hello Lions, Lioness and Leos!
It is a great day to be a Lion! Now, some of you may be asking yourself, “why?”.
There are a number of reasons we should be happy today and each day being a Lion. One
of the main reasons is “we serve” and by serving you are touching someone’s life and
usually it is in an incredibly positive way. When you think about what makes you happy, it
is usually something that makes you feel good. It can be something happening to you or
more likely, as a Lion, it is happening to someone else. Do you remember what that smile
looked like on that child who just received their first pair of glasses who can now see;
what about when you took that family food and the children were jumping up and down
saying “we have food, we have food” or maybe it was when you provided some funds to
help that family with a child suffering from leukemia and there were tears in their eyes
knowing that they were just given a special gift of love from some caring Lions that they
really did not even know.
I think we forget what motivates us at times. Maybe we should spend some time
in our meetings discussing and highlighting why we became Lions in the first place. It is a
great way to rejuvenate ourselves. It might even be time to reach out and “elbow bump”
each other and say “Thank you for serving. You are making a difference.” Words can be
simple, but they can go a long way in boosting our ego and in many cases, it comes at the
most opportune time. I want to say “thank you” to each of you for serving. Do not give up
during these times of COVID because people need us now more than ever.
Have you given any thought to what kind of training you would like to see happen-
ing in our district? Do you want to have some of the specific office responsibilities dis-
cussed; how about some Ohio Plan training for your club; a class on how to conduct a
fundraiser or conduct a meeting? What about some leadership classes? If you are look-
ing for something and do not know where to go, please contact IPDG Sherry Bingamon
who is our Global Leadership Team district representative at: [email protected]. She is
willing to help you in anyway she can.

I hope all of our clubs have committed to the Fall Into Service project the week of
October 4-10. Some ideas are writing cards for a nursing home, the fire department, the
police department, our schools. How about taking someone some of the masks to wear?
You could do a road or park clean up. You could prepare a meal to someone who cannot
get out. You could have a food collection. You could deliver flowers to someone shut in.
You could do yard work for an elderly person who cannot get out. You could paint a build-
ing. The list goes on and on. The project does not have to cost a lot of money. It can be
something you can do with your club helping others. I will be working that week serving
others and I hope you will too. Make sure you get your activities listed in MyLion to get
credit for the Fall Into Service Week.
As members, we need to keep in touch with each other. If you cannot meet in per-
son, please look at having an electronic meeting. If you use a program such as Zoom,
people who do not have a computer can still join via a phone. Now more than ever, we
need our members to step up and be strong Lions. There is so much we can do even if it
is something that we have never done before. Who knows? You may have just found a
new project that you will like better than the same old thing. If you want to host an elec-
tronic meeting via Zoom but you do not know how to do it, please contact me and I will
help get you connected. Keep recruiting new members and retain what we have. New
potential members can attend a Zoom meeting and they may even be more comfortable
by meeting the club this way the first time. We are finding out that there are many people
who are recruiting and installing new members via Zoom. Way to go!
Our first district Cabinet meeting was held August 8th. We were able to social dis-
tance at a park in Washington Court House. Great information was provided by the dis-
trict committee chairpersons. Most of us had not been out for some time so it was nice to
visit through our face masks. We are also halfway through our Zone meetings. Some
have been in person with the appropriate social distancing while others have been via
Zoom. I can tell you that all of them have been well attended. Please join us for these
meetings. You would be surprised at what you will learn and hear about.
Thank you for your great work and do not be afraid to ask for help if you need it.
Even though we are not having many face-to-face meetings right now, you can keep re-
cruiting new members. Use the Ohio Plan which provides you with the templates for
membership recruiting. It works!
Let me know when you are having activities so I can come when my schedule per-
mits. My email is: [email protected] and my phone number is (937) 520-1936. I
am here to serve you!
Stay healthy and safe! Have a wonderful 2020-2021 Lions Year!

“Want to grow”
Most people don’t want to gain weight they want to be lose a pound or two! Me TOO! But I’m writing
about growing Lionism! Some might think membership-- but membership is only about numbers. I want
you to think not just in quantity but also in quality. Most every club I have visited, tells me they want
more members but don’t look at themselves, their existing members. The vital ingredient for true satis-
fying long-term success may very well be how satisfied is your existing members with your club. What is
your club gatherings (meetings) like -> is it a party, happy members, informational, personal satisfac-
tion, do you like being part of the gathering? Are the personal needs of your members being satisfied?
Before you look outside your club for new members, take time to look inside your club. Are your mem-
bers feeling satisfied with the Why, What, and How you do what you do? Do your members have ideas
and desires to change? Most people want to feel needed, appreciated, and a contributor of the club.
WHY does your club exist today? Maybe you want to take time to brainstorm with your members about
the purpose of you club, its activities, and what the community needs that your club can provide. The
following exhibit has been extracted from “Full Steam Ahead” about building a vision; page 176: “Vision
is a lot more than putting a plaque on the wall. A real vision is lived, not framed. The following diagram
depicts the ‘double click.’”

cused, get energized, get great results. Read the book “Full Steam Ahead!” by Ken Blanchard and Jesse

and PEACE. This year, young people have the opportunity to express their visions of peace
through the lens of service. Students ages 11, 12 or 13 as of November 15 are eligible to par-
ticipate in the International Peace Poster Contest. Entries not meeting the following deadlines
will be disqualified.

North American Membership Initiative (NAMI)
By: IPCC Lydia Houser, District Representative OH6
This year LCI has implemented a new program on a new initiative. LCI has introduced the North Ameri-
can Membership Initiative (NAMI).
The goals of NAMI are:
Rejuvenate Districts with New Clubs
Revitalize Clubs with New Members
Re-motivate Members with New Fellowships and Exciting Service
Support District and Club Leaders
NAI is a process by which Districts:
Build a Team: Consists of leaders to lead the district in creating and implementing a plan for suc-
cess.
Build a Vision: Have the leadership team develop a vision and set goals for the district.
Build a Plan: To achieve the goals.
Build Success: Implement the plan, work through it, and adjust it, as needed.
This program is of major importance to LCI and Ohio Lions. We continue to lose many more mem-
bers than we bring in all across Ohio and North America. We are also losing clubs that have been
around for many years but have not been able to recruit and retain members. If we are to remain a
viable part of being a service organization, we must work to recruit and retain our members.
We have seen numerous initiatives over the years to improve our membership numbers and continue
to grow. This not only allows us to accomplish our projects, raise funds and perform service, it allows
us to do more. In these times, there are many in need of our services and it never hurts to have anoth-
er helping hand to get our work done.
I am not asking you to go out and start another whole program to make our district grow. I am asking
each club to take the Ohio Plan and utilize it this year. Do not just go look at the plan; you need to read
and then go accomplish each step in the plan. The Ohio Plan is 10 pages and half of that document is
templates that a club can use so they do not have to create letters, forms, etc. It has been proven to
work if you utilize it and follow it all the way through the process. Remember, even if you get one new
member, you have been successful!
I will be working with the Global Membership Team and Global Leadership Team. The Ohio Plan is
what our district provided training on last year. We will be happy to provide the training for you and
your clubs; just ask. I can even send you the Ohio Plan but you can also get all of it by going to the
Ohio Lions website, got to Committees, then Membership and the Ohio Plan and training charts are lo-
cated in the attachments box. We do not need to reinvent the wheel; use the Ohio Plan. It works!
We need to ask other people to join us and become Lions. Find out what is important to them and
determine if it is something that will work for your club as a project. It is time to think “outside of the
box” to move our terrific organization forward. New ideas can bring in new members. Also, keep our
current members involved and an important part of your club.
I look forward to working with you this year. If I can assist you or your club, please call me at (937)
609-6594 or email at: [email protected]

Fall into Service with Lions Save the Date
There will be a Week of Service for Ohio Lions scheduled for October 4-10, 2020. The event
has been dubbed Fall into Service with Lions. During the week of service, all clubs of the Ohio
Lions will be asked to perform service in their community, zone, region, or District. No one will
tell any club what type of service should be performed. However, help will be given to any club
to assist in developing or performing service. The service performed does not need to be a new
project but must be service safely performed.
It is hoped that by working together we will not only have a major impact on our local com-
munity, zone, region, District and State, but will become more visible to non-Lions looking for a
way to serve in these challenging times. A sense of Lions working together will strengthen the
Pride in all meanings of the word.
There is not much time to plan and implement this project so start putting on your thinking
hats to come up with a service project that you can do. It could be cleaning up a park; writing
notes to the elderly or to a limited income facility; making face masks; doing road clean up; de-
livering food to those in need, doing a car sign parade around your community, etc. The list is
endless.
What can you think of to do that doesn't cost a lot, but is serving our communities? Let's
work together to show Ohio Lions how it is done. OH6 clubs can all think of something to do to
serve and be visible in our communities.

The MD 13 goal is 60% of the clubs participation throughout the State. Can OH6 match or beat
that? During the month of August all clubs, Zone Chairs, Committee Chairs and District Officers
will receive additional information along with service suggestions. Clubs willing to participate
will sign a “Letter of Commitment”. Clubs can work with Zone Chairs and other District Offic-
ers if you need help. Projects can be a few hours during the week, a few hours over several
nights or a project that lasts all day. Your club knows your members’ talents. No project is too
small or too big. The GAT Committee, made up of the District GMT, GLT and GST is available to
help clubs reach their goals. In conjunction with doing the service, clubs are asked to report the
service in MYLION. More information will be coming soon! If anyone has any questions once you
receive the information; please feel free to contact the OH6 District Governor Ric Houser or Dis-
trict GST Coordinator, Lion Jay Newland. This state wide project can only succeed, if your club
participates. Join us as we continue our second century of service.

Lions:
Please see the I Am A Lion Sign Order Sheet below. Signs are $10 each. This may be something
where you would like to have a sign but also want to check and see if any of your Lions/clubs are
interested in purchasing as a great way to advertise. I have one in my front yard. Our club is buy-
ing a number of them to put out when we have events to advertise who we are as well. We talk
about branding and getting ourselves out there and noticed. This is a way that we can start and it
is fairly inexpensive. Signs will be black, red and blue lettering.
This is something that was thought of due to the COVID-19 and not being to get out and about to
advertise being a lion but it is something we want to do at anytime. This way, any lion could have
a sign to advertise.
Feel free to pass this on to anyone who might be interested and especially get it to all your club
members. I am trying to avoid added costly shipping fees and will work in the seven districts to
arrange pick-ups.
The order forms have the contact and payment information on them. Order forms come back to
