New Pool Float

We had a nice surprise and addition to our pool accessories. Last year, we received a Pink Flamingo and now we have our Unicorn float. We took pictures and we had fun pushing each other around the pool during Aqua Aerobics class. Wouldn’t you love to do Slip ‘N Slide on the front lawn? We love the sun!

Arlette giggled as she floated around the pool.

Vicki said, “Oh, my grandkids are coming and they will love this.”

Treasured Ring Returned to RodneyRodney Paden wore his class ring proudly for 44 years. He had spent eight years at the Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia, and his class ring was his prized possession.

His ring went missing from his room at a Green Valley assisted living facility in June 2018, and he was devastated. Every day, he would ask his mother, Pat, resident at The Peaks, where was his ring. They reported it to the Sheriff’s Department and they checked pawn shops, but had no luck in finding it.

Rodney attended Fork Union Military Academy, beginning in the fifth grade and graduated in 1974 in a class of 130. Three years later, he was attending college in Pennsylvania when his vehicle was struck head-on by a drunken wrong-way driver. He suffered a traumatic brain injury.

In January, 2019, Pat, Rodney’s mother, called the military academy to see if she could order a new ring. After Col. David Coggins, the academy’s president, received Pat’s phone call, he shared the story with his colleagues and several students at the all-male school. The kids who go to the school become friends for life. Coggins wasn’t surprised by their reaction. They said, “We’re going to give Rodney a ring.” So they hunted up a 1974 yearbook to find a picture of the exact ring they had from Josten’s. The ringmaker at Josten’s created an exact replica of Rodney’s ring.

Col. David Coggins and his wife, Kelli, flew out special and arrived at The Peaks to present Rodney with his ring. Col. Coggins choked up with emotion as he held the ring and said, “God loves you, Rodney, so do the boys at Fork Union and so do we. God bless you, Brother.” They also presented Rodney with an Under Armour Fork Union shirt and a Fork Union president’s coin, which is given to those who demonstrate excellence.

As for the ring, Coggins said, “This is something that Rodney earned. You only get it when you graduate. It represents living up to a standard.”

Rodney grinned broadly and immediately put the ring on his finger and said, “Thank goodness.”

Welcome Back to School!September marks the beginning of the school year for kids, and what better way to celebrate this time of year than to learn about nutritious foods for brain power along with brain games and physical exercise. Our Culinary Education Series provided a few nutrition boosters for us to keep in mind:1. Antioxidants are food compounds commonly

found in Vitamins C and E and beta carotene. Antioxidants improve blood flow to the brain. Some foods to try include: kale, berries, beets, broccoli, onions, red bell peppers, oranges, cherries and dark chocolate.

2. Omega-3 Fatty Acids are essential for good brain health! They are found in fish, especially salmon, sardines, trout, tuna and white fish. You can eat almonds, avocados, walnuts and flaxseeds if you don’t like fish.

3. Dark green, leafy veggies, such as kale, spinach, and collard greens, are filled with folic acids, which is associated with processing of information faster and memory recall.

4. Water is vital as we age, so we should be drinking water even when we are not thirsty. Dehydration can have a negative impact on mental performance.

5. Eating more healthy foods is recommended by experts. Actually, they recommend a minimum of five servings of fruits and vegetables every day. Start the day with a half cup of strawberries with breakfast, fill your sandwich with veggies for lunch, and a salad for dinner, with at least two snacks during the day (apple slices, carrot sticks, or a banana).

StaycationOur September Staycation will be on Sunday, September 22nd, at 3 p.m. in the Lobby. You are cordially invited to attend a Murder Mystery Party Game and Dinner, a 1920s mystery, entitled “Murder on the Boardwalk.” We will have dinner with Italian Spaghetti, Garlic Bread and Caesar Salad with mock cocktails. The setting starts with Nuggy Jones from Atlantic City, who has agreed to host the meeting at his residence and place of business, the Karlton Ritz Hotel on The Boardwalk. It is the height of Prohibition in the late twenties, and the underground mob scene is prospering in major U.S. cities with rum running, loan sharking, protection rackets, illicit speakeasies and gaming halls. To unite the underworld, crime bosses from Atlantic City, New York City and Chicago have agreed to establish The Commission at the Atlantic City conference. This ruling body will oversee all mob organizations in the United States and serve as the supreme ruler of the underground.Varied opinions have been formed on how The Commission should be managed, who will be the boss of all bosses, and if it should even be created. The disagreements have created hostility between rival mob factions, but the crime bosses have given their word to conduct themselves with integrity at the conference. Mobsters from the most prominent families are starting to arrive in Atlantic City, and tension is building in the air. This is where your story begins. You’ll tackle a challenging crime while you feast on our fantastic dinner. Just beware! The criminal is lurking somewhere in the room, and you may find yourself as a Prime Suspect before you know it!

Eat Healthy and Exercise, for your body

and your brain.

Snack TimePhysical exercise affects the brain many ways. It increases heart rate, which pumps more oxygen to the brain. It also aids the release of a plethora of hormones, all of which participate in providing a nourishing environment for the growth of brain cells.

One important ingredient to keep our minds sharp is food. The benefits not only include better cardiovascular health, lower risk of diabetes and lower chance of developing clinical depression, but also improving our memory ability.

The Culinary Education Series provided a great new recipe for a smoothie that consists of avocado and kale. Healthy unsaturated fats in avocados help keep your brain cell membranes flexible, while the folic acids in kale are associated with faster processing of information and memory recall.

We will try out the Avocado and Kale Smoothie with a nutritious trail mix snack on Tuesday, September 24th, at 3 p.m. in the Bistro, so save the date!

Exercise, eat fruits and veggies, and hydrate.

Apples and Teachers

It’s unclear when and why students gave apples to their teachers, but the most solid theory is that apples became a common gift to teachers somewhere around the mid-to-late 1800s.On the American western frontier, families whose children attended schools were often responsible for housing and feeding teachers. In these small towns, students often helped maintain the schoolhouse, even coming in on Saturdays to help clean it up. In that tradition, an apple for the teacher could be considered a sweet token of appreciation. How many of you at the Peaks were teachers? Were your school lunches packed in brown paper bags or lunch boxes? What was the most fun getting ready to go back to school? Did you walk to school, ride a bike or take a school bus? Were you ever in a one-room schoolhouse? Did you like school or not?We would like to celebrate and honor all of you on Tuesday, September 10th, at 3 p.m., for Apple Crisp and sliced apples with a variety of dipping sauces. It will be a fun time reminiscing about school years and sharing stories and tasty apples. All residents are welcome!
