Upcoming Changes

Yes, this is a repeat…because it is worthy of repeating…

Change is a part of life, leadership, and the church.

Researchers explain that “the change” isn’t usually the problem. Instead,

it’s the loss that comes with the change. We grieve what we lose when

change happens, at home, at work, or at church, even if the change cre-

ates positive results that support and complement our beliefs or organi-

zation.

At Messiah, we consider change through the lens of Messiah’s mission and vision. We

work to retrieve as much information as possible, to obtain as many perspectives as possi-

ble, and to build consensus on how potential changes will aid Messiah in its missional and

visional pursuit, with attention to any losses that might accompany change. Other consid-

erations of change include timing, communication, and implementation, all of which pos-

sess their own opportunities for growth and learning. Simply put, change is complex.

Well, all that is to lay the groundwork for me to announce that beginning Sunday, Septem-

ber 2, 2018, our worship service times will change.

Traditional Liturgical Worship, 9:00am

Gift Hour (Growing In Faith Together), 10:15am-11:00am

Contemporary, 11;00am

Journey at Messiah (JAM) will have a new format also, as we will offer learning opportuni-

ties for children during both service times.

At the 9:00 service, after The Kids Talk, children will be dismissed to participate in

learning activities and then return for communion and the completion of the ser-

vice with their families.

At the 11:00 service, JAM will resume its former arrangement, where kids will go to

classrooms and participate in a rotational curriculum and worship participation,

and parents will pick up children after worship.

We hope these changes will honor our mission and vision as well as benefit our entire

community of faith at Messiah.

Peace, PT

Staff Updates

This is overdue, but we welcome Dave Beard to our staff as Messiah’s Outreach Direc-tor. Dave facilitated our Day of Outreach in August and will be working to coordinate other events that will help us achieve connections to the groups in our vision statement. Welcome Dave!

Secondly, we have hired Mrs. Caitlin Vance as our Preschool and Childcare Director. Caitlin comes to us from Abacus Learning Center in Fort Wayne. Caitlin will be assuming the reins of leadership from Karen Haines as Karen and her family prepare to relocate. We look forward to learning more about Caitlin and welcoming her family in the weeks ahead!

Finally, we welcome Rev. Fred Hasecke, retired Senior Pastor from Trinity English Lu-theran Church in Fort Wayne. Beginning in September, Pr. Hasecke will help lead our Quest Bible study on the first Tuesday of the month. In addition, Pr. Hasecke will also assist Pr. Tim with homebound visitation and communion one day a month. Just as a point of reference, Pr. Hasecke served as my pastor and helped me discern my call to ministry. Welcome, Pr. Hasecke!

Children and Youth Activities Kick off with Rally Day!!

Rally Day is Messiah’s special kick-off day where we celebrate the beginning of our Chil-dren’s and Youth programs!

The Journey is Messiah’s children’s ministry program which includes something for the children at both services as well as family fun activities each month. Service at 9:00a will have KUCoo (Kids Under Construction), and our Journey Hour (traditional Sunday School), will be during the 11:00 service.

The EDGE – is our youth group for students in grades 5 and 6 – right on the edge of leaving childhood and entering the scary world of ….the teenager!! We meet for Bible study as part of the Journey hour (during the 11:0 service). We also meet at the Youth House on various Sundays as well as fun events off-campus!

CIA – Confirmands in Action – is our students in 7th and 8th grades going through the Confirmation process. This group meets Wednesday evenings from6-8p at the Youth House. They also meet various Sundays at the Youth House (when EDGE isn’t there!) as well as a few off-campus activities.

PULSE is our high school youth group which meets for fellowship, fun, bible study and discussion on Sunday evenings from 6-8p, at the Youth House.

New Journey Times!!!

We are changing things up again this year! In an effort to meet the needs of all different approaches to worship, we will be offering something for the children at both services!

9:00 Traditional Service

We are going KUCooo at our 9:00 worship service with Kids Under Construction!! Get it? We’re going KUCoo for Jesus…K(ids) U(nder) Co(nstruction) o (just because we needed another ‘o’ to be kucoo!!) During the 9:00 service we are offering an alterna-tive to our Journey program that provides opportunities for families so spend some time in church worshipping together as well as some time together with other kids building on their faith foundation. Families will go to church together, then the kids will go to Kids Under Construction (KUCoo) after the Kids Talk. In KUCoo the kids will

do an activity based on the sermon readings that could include making a snack, a craft, games or songs and prayer! After they’re done going KUCoo, they will be brought back to their parents to join them for communion.

11:00 Contemporary Service:

During the Journey hour parents will take their children to their classrooms before the service begins. Parents can pick them up at the end of the Journey hour. Journey us-es the Workshop Rotation Model as our guide for our curriculum, where one Bible sto-ry is taught over several Sundays, and the children attend a different workshop each week to experience the story from different perspectives. Each week, different activi-ties are planned around the chosen theme or lesson. Workshops include Crafts, Cook-ing, Story Time, Drama, and Video.

All children and friends of Messiah are always invited and welcome at any and all of our fun events such as the Easter Egg Hunt, Trunk or Treating, Pumpkinpalooza, Movie Night and our Christmas Program in December. The Journey is moving forward with great ener-gy and momentum. Hop on and enjoy the ride!!

Rally Sunday and Pancake Breakfast!!

Things are gearing up for Rally Day which will be Sunday, September 9, 2018. Rally Sun-day is the big kickoff for much of our growth learning groups’ ministry ‘season’ such as EDGE, CIA, PULSE and Journey and our GIFT (Growing in Faith Together) hour.

9:30-11:00- Pancakes and Sausage Breakfast & Entertainment Join us in Satre Hall and enjoy breakfast together as we celebrate! Entertainment will be provided again this year by Mindy Miller with Twists to Remember! We will also have info all our children’s and youth ministries and all the opportunities available to you! All free will offerings will go towards youth activities for the coming year.

11:00 – Take your children to their respective Journey classrooms before the service. There will volunteers in the hallways helping you find the right place! During this ser-vice our Journey teachers will bring the classes in for a special Kids Talk, introduce and install the Journey and EDGE, CIA and PULSE leaders and our GIFT leaders. We will also have Noisy Offering, and Communion. Teachers will take the children back to their rooms where you can pick the up after the service.

September 23 - Bible Sunday

The Journey will be handing out Bibles to our 3 year olds, kindergarteners and 3rd graders on Sunday, September 23, at both services. The children and their parents will be invited forward for the Bible blessing and presentation during the Kids Talk at each service. If your child attending Journey does not have a Bible or if you have not received a letter in the mail, please contact Heidi, [email protected].

Journey Teachers

We have been blessed, once again, to have folks who have answered the call to be Jour-ney, Edge, CIA, and PULSE leaders. Following are our leaders for your children and youth. The three and four year old teachers are: Mary Hudson, Jennifer Mable, Izzy Peckham, and Lisa Daniel. The pre-k/kindergarten teachers are Marlie and Emma Gernhardt, Lily Kissner, and Jacob Crum. First/Second grade teachers are Amy Reff, Sally Kissner, Dave Beard, and Sashelle Graham. The Third/Fourth grade teachers are Rachel, Owen, and Christine Counterman, Dane Farlee, and Katie Engle. Our Edge (5th & 6th) teachers are Car-ey and Linda Baker, Nedrah Kilby, Sue Miller, and Sha-kiya Collier, CIA leaders are John and Cindy Sabo, Craig and Shelley Musolf, Curtis and Rachel Langlois, and Kayla Reidenbach. Dave Beard, Taylor Pufahl, Lori Dunham, and PT are PULSE leaders. Journey “support crew” include Sashelle Rose, Owen Counterman, Jack Davis, Pat Strasser, Walt Strasser, and the parents.

Please thank these folks for helping to lead our children and youth on a journey that grows a faith in Jesus Christ that works in real life.

CIA Orientation and Acolyte Training Wednesday, September 5 (5th and 6th Grades, optional; 7th & 8th Grades, mandatory)

Please mark your calendars for CIA Orientation, for parents and students, on Wednesday, September 5, 6:00-7:00 PM in the Sanctuary. PT will go over expectations, schedules and other requirements and answer questions for the upcoming year and the Confirmation process. Orientation is part of the CIA program and attendance is expected. If you cannot be there, please contact Heidi so information can be given to you.

From 7:00-8:00 PM, we will have a training session for all acolytes. Participation in aco-lyting is a required part of the Confirmation training at Messiah (grades 7 and 8) and we

Page 12: September 2018 - Messiah Lutheran Preschool/Kindergartenmessiahlc.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/2018-09-Messenger.pdf · At the 11:00 service, JAM will resume its former arrangement,

would like to extend an invitation to our 5th and 6th graders. Parents and students will also have the opportunity to sign up for Sundays that work best for their schedules. CIA students have to sign up for both services both during the fall and spring.

The Messiah acolyte pool has been configured numerous ways in the past. Most recently, our confirmation youth, 7th & 8th graders, have been serving in this capacity and will con-tinue to do so. However, we would like to involve more young persons (5th and 6th grad-ers) in this act of service to God and Messiah. In addition to training, our expectations would be that you allow your child to acolyte at whatever service your family attends. For example, if your family worships at the 11:00 AM service, the worship staff would only anticipate you serving at the specific service per your choice. In other words, we would not expect your child to serve at the 9:00 am service, of course, unless you have indicated otherwise. That will happen enough during Confirmation! When you attend the training, you can select which service your child will be available to serve. We appreciate your will-ingness to consider this opportunity to serve God and Messiah. Likewise, should you de-cide to do so, we hope that service in this capacity will bless your child and family as well. If your child already serves in this capacity, he or she will remain on the upcoming sched-ule unless notified otherwise. And certainly, we thank you for your willingness and dili-gence in this service.

First Communion Instruction

It is common practice within the ELCA, and other traditions, to offer the Sacrament of Ho-ly Communion to younger children according to individual church and family preferences. At Messiah, we currently offer that opportunity to families with younger children. We will offer First Communion Instruction this fall.

All New Communicants will be formally recognized on Sunday, November 11th, at the service of the families’ choice.

If you are interested in having your child/children receive communion, we are offering the following instructional classes (60mins) that you (or other adult/guardian) and your child must attend (only one of the classes):

• Saturday, October 27th, 2018, at 10:00am & 2:00pm, in the Sanctuary

Saturday, November 3rd, 2018, at 10:00am & 2:00pm, in the Sanctuary

Please contact the church office at 260-485-8716 if you are interested in Early Commun-ion Instruction for your child and state which of the above class times you will be attend-ing. Some instruction booklets will be available as a reference for conversation with your child when you come to the class. Please feel free to contact Pr. Tim with any questions.

New Bible Study/Social Group

A Bible study/social group is being formed for military veterans of all ages. Messiah mem-bers and their friends are welcome. Contact Tom Agness for further information at [email protected], 485-9710, or 466-7464.

Preschool/Childcare News

“Dear Lord, use my eyes to see new friends, open my ears to hear my teacher, open my mind to learn new things, let my heart remember You are near when I am afraid, help me to love others like you do. I want to shine your light so bright in my school. Amen.”

This is a prayer that I came across one evening as I was “surfing” through Pinterest. Isn’t Pinterest the greatest thing since sliced bread? I think it is very appropriate as we begin another school year with all of our eager preschool students. We are excited to have so many students back to learn about Jesus and His love for them. It is so rewarding to see such little children begin to build a faith that will last them a lifetime. This back-to-school season is a very bittersweet one for me personally, as it will be my last fall as director here at Messiah. I am confident that Pastor Tim and the hiring team have found a very qualified director to replace me. I have been talking about my family’s move to Georgia for so long that it has seemed that it would never be a reality. Now that the move is hap-pening very soon (most likely late October/ early November), my emotions seem to get the best of me nearly every day. My time as director at Messiah has been one of the most rewarding things I have ever experienced in my life. I have worked with a staff of wonderful people, and I have seen so many children come through the doors of this building, and leave prepared for elementary school. I have very fond memories of my days at Messiah (both with the church and preschool), and I will treasure my time here forever. I will continue to keep everyone posted, and I promise I won’t leave without say-ing goodbye.

God’s peace,

Karen Haines, Preschool and Childcare Director

CARE & NURTURE

From The Parish Nurses…

Ah – the good old days of summer…sunshine, fresh air and many opportunities to eat in the great outdoors. Here are some things to remember when enjoying the family reunion at the park, tailgating at the football game, or floating down the river in your kayak eating your lunch.

According to the CDC (Centers for Disease and Control), every year 1 in 6 Americans gets sick after consuming a contaminated food or beverage.

These illnesses are largely preventable with proper food safety. Potlucks seem to be a main culprit – foods sit out for extended periods of time at the wrong temperature, and a dish is easily contaminated when someone grabs a serving with their hands or double-dipping.

Wash, wash, wash your hands with soap and water for at least 40 seconds before and after handling food.

Keep cold foods cold. Place cold food in a cooler with ice or frozen gel packs. Meat, poul-try and seafood may be packed frozen to keep them cold longer. Keep the cooler closed – use another cooler to keep drinks in as it will get opened and closed more often lowering the temperature.

Don’t cross-contaminate foods. Keep raw meat, poultry, and seafood securely wrapped to keep their juices from contaminating other foods.

Clean your produce well under running tap water before packing them in the cooler – even the ones with skins or rinds that are not eaten.

Before you begin your outdoor feast – make sure your hands and surfaces are clean. If you have no running water, use a water jug, some soap and paper towels. You could also use disposable, moist towelettes. Clean the area where food will be served and eaten. Keep all platters, bowls, and serving utensils clean when preparing and serving food.

This would probably be a good time to tell you to stay away from the Same Old Plate – do not put cooked food (from the grill) on the same plate that held the raw food unless it has been thoroughly washed in hot soapy water first. While on the subject of plates, encour-age the use of a clean plate for second helpings as the serving spoon may touch the used plate and then be put back into the serving piece. Ick! continued on next page

Once food has been served, cold food should not sit out for longer than 2 hours (1 hour if above 90 degrees). If it does, don’t take a chance – discard it!

Enjoy your outdoor food event safely!

If you are unfamiliar with this mission you can see what it’s all about at www.bagsofgrace.org. Messiah Lutheran Church Vision Statement Our Vision: To forever change lives through the Gospel of Jesus by becoming an equipping, empowering, and mobilizing church in our community that displays the love of Christ and con-nects with people of all walks of life through worship, communion, service, fellowship, and compassion, led by the Holy Spirit and focused on the Great Commission (Mt 28.18-20).

Our vision of 2017 includes a 3-5-year focus on…

Singles and Starters (ages 17-32) We desire to broaden our scope of ministry to meet the practical spiritual needs of

single, young adults. Messiah Lutheran Church will commit resources to expand hospitality and engage-

ment to single, young adults. In the next year, we will develop a social media ministry to engage young adults in

meaningful issues of faith and life. We will also create a physical space on our premises that will foster hospitable and authentic conversations.

Families with Young Children Messiah Lutheran Church desires to partner in worship and ministry with families with

young children. Through our preschool and childcare ministry (Preschool/Childcare), we can meet the needs of this group, which comprises a large portion of the community sur-rounding the church. It is of utmost importance to connect with these families because youth are the lifeblood and future of our church.

We will build and strengthen our relationships to families with young children through the Preschool/Childcare ministry.

In the next five years, we dream of growing church membership within the Preschool/Childcare program from 10% to 60%. Furthermore, we desire to increase attendance and inclusion of the congregation at Preschool/Childcare events and Preschool/Childcare fami-lies at congregational events.

Forever Young Messiah Lutheran Church is called by God to reach those who are Forever Young, who

are nearing retirement or are already retired, with the Good News of abundant life through Jesus Christ. The skills and experiences of these adults are a rich resource for our community.

We will offer them new opportunities for worship, for fellowship among themselves and within our congregation, seminars and personal services to maintain and improve their quality of life, and avenues for them to be of service to the community. In each of the next 5 years, we will offer 4-6 meaningful outreach activities for personal growth, fel-lowship, and service.
