SEPTEMBER 2017 Welcome Back Everyone!!! We are so excited to see everyone after a long summer break! The school has actually been incredibly busy over the last 2 months. We were so happy to see the laughter and learning of all those students and staff who participated in the Summer Heat Program in July. Our beloved custodian, Ms. Ciolfi and her team have been in for most of the summer working hard to make our school sparkle and shine-which it does! Many of our staff have been in the school now for weeks in anticipation of the school year. We all want to make this year the best one yet. We have a number of new staff, students and families to our community this year. We want you all to feel welcome and part of the family. Princess Elizabeth is truly a special place for a number of reasons: we have creative and committed staff who go out of their way to make all students feel loved and successful; we have a number of community partners and parent volunteers who donate their time and resources so that we can provide students with phenomenal opportunities; and finally, we have the most interesting, funny, and capable students anywhere. These factors combined make this the best place to send your children. We hope that we get lots of opportunities to see you here at the school throughout the year, and that you will always feel free to contact us if you have any questions, concerns or compliments! SEPTEMBER 2017

Welcome Back Everyone!!! We are so excited to see everyone after a long

summer break!

The school has actually been incredibly busy over the last 2 months. We were so

happy to see the laughter and learning of all those students and staff who

participated in the Summer Heat Program in July. Our beloved custodian, Ms.

Ciolfi and her team have been in for most of the summer working hard to make our

school sparkle and shine-which it does! Many of our staff have been in the school

now for weeks in anticipation of the school year.

We all want to make this year the best one yet. We have a number of new staff,

students and families to our community this year. We want you all to feel

welcome and part of the family. Princess Elizabeth is truly a special place for a

number of reasons: we have creative and committed staff who go out of their way

to make all students feel loved and successful; we have a number of community

partners and parent volunteers who donate their time and resources so that we can

provide students with phenomenal opportunities; and finally, we have the most

interesting, funny, and capable students anywhere. These factors combined make

this the best place to send your children.

We hope that we get lots of opportunities to see you here at the school throughout

the year, and that you will always feel free to contact us if you have any questions,

concerns or compliments! Let’s make this the best year yet!

OUR SCHOOL MISSION

DSBN Continues Makerspace Revolution

In recent years a new focus has emerged in elementary classrooms throughout the world –

Makerspaces. Makerspaces encourage invention, design, building, programming, tinkering,

and creativity using products from all fields of technology, science and math. Innovation and

discovery is happening at rapid speed and students are responding to this form of classroom

delivery with enthusiasm and creativity. To nurture this new initiative the District School

Board of Niagara has decided to expand our elementary Technology programs, encompassing

the Makerspace philosophy.

Previously grade 7 and 8 students would be bussed to local high schools to participate in a

Design Technology program. Our focus will now be to bring current skills and technology to

all students, in all grades, to a Makerspace environment. Teachers will now have the time

and space to immerse their students in an innovative and technologically enriched

environment. Schools and communities will be using their

Makerspaces to complete cross curricular projects and

board wide challenges designed to foster the skills and

creativity that are hallmarks of today’s technological

world.

Stay tuned for more news and ways to get involved in the

Makerspace revolution.

At Princess Elizabeth we are committed to reducing our ecological footprint and one way you can help in that regard is to read the newsletter online. To that end, no paper copies of the newsletters will be issued unless requested on the form below.

NEWLETTER COPY REQUEST

Our family does not have regular access to a computer, therefore we request that a paper copy be sent home with:

Name of one child_________________________________________________ Teacher___________________________

Signature of Parent/Guardian__________________________________________________________________________

Please email a copy of the newsletter and calendar, as they become available, to __________________________________

For many reasons and varied reasons, the

following changes are being introduced:

-Pizza will not be pre-ordered this year . Simply

send your child with the proper change to buy the

number of pizza slices they will need for second

break. The price remains $1/slice for cheese

pizza.

-Pizza will now be sold on Tuesdays at second

break, except for the last Tuesdays of each month,

which will now be Lunch Lady Day. First Pizza

Day is Tuesday September 12.

-Lunch Lady orders are by pre-order only. Those forms will come home soon, for the September 26 lunch

date. Check out their web site at www.the lunchlady.ca .

-Breakfast Club members will be enter ing the school through the Library door off the playground.

Breakfast Club starts on Monday September 11 at 8:30.

-Milk Cards will be sold at the office at fir st break starting Wednesday September 6. Each card is

worth 12 cartons of milk (250 ml), white or chocolate, at a cost of $10 per card. Milk is available

at second breaks starting Monday September 11. Individual milk is also available after that date at

a cost of $1/250 ml carton.

GYM SHOES / INDOOR SHOES

Mrs. Ciolfi and her crew have worked extremely hard this summer to make our school sparkle and shine. We can show our appreciation by ensuring that our students have clean shoes to wear inside the building. In addition, for safety reasons and to help develop positive attitudes and total involvement in physical education classes, students need proper footwear for the gym.

VISITOR SIGN IN & SCHOOL SECURITY

Most visitors are welcome to the school. Should you need to pick up a student early, or drop something off for your child, during school hours, we ask that you enter through the front doors and report directly to the office. Items which you are dropping off may be left with the office and we will call down your child at the next class break. Lunches may be left on the shelf outside the office. Please write a note for the teacher if you need to pick up your child early; otherwise, we ask that you meet your children at their respective dismissal doors. All visitors who wish to visit the school will need to check with the office, sign in and wear a visitor’s tag. Wearing the visitor’s tag signifies to staff and students that you have stopped by the office before walking through the school.

NUT ALLERGIES

We are asking students to bring only nut free snacks and foods to school. We are trying to make the school a “Nut-Aware, Nut-Free Zone” for several reasons. Peanut and nut allergies are usually severe and can be fatal. Even tiny amounts of nut particles or residue can cause someone with a nut allergy to have a strong reaction. Please read labels to see if peanut or nut products are present. Try to avoid products that do not carry a list of ingredients. Thank you in advance for your co-operation.

From your school nurse . . .

Anyone can get head lice. Check for head lice weekly as part of your regular

routine. The best way to avoid the spread of lice is by avoiding head-to-head

contact. Remind your children not to share combs, brushes, hats, scarves or

anything used on the head.

Checking for lice

Use a bright light (a magnifying glass may help)

Part hair in small sections and look near the scalp

Head lice are tiny grey/brown insects that live only on the scalp of hu-

mans. They crawl quickly but cannot fly or jump. Adult female lice

glue eggs on the hair shaft close to the scalp.

If you find lice

Check all the people that live in your house

Treat all cases at the same time to stop the spread of lice

Inform the school and/or daycare so classmates can be checked

Tell anyone in close contact with your child (family members, friends,

baby-sitters)

Getting rid of lice

Treatment products are to be used only on those who have head lice, as they

do not prevent lice. Talk to a health professional about products and methods

available. Follow instructions carefully. The Wet Combing Method helps find

and remove head lice by combing through hair soaked with conditioner, using

a fine-toothed comb. For more information on Wet Combing Method or on lice

visit:

www.niagararegion.ca/health search lice or call the Parent Talk Line at 905-688-8248 or 1-888-505-6074 ext. 7555

EARLY RELEASE DAYS

Friday, September 15th is an Early Release

Day.

Students who walk to and from school will

be dismissed at 12:05 p.m.

All buses providing service to the District

School Board of Niagara will arrive at their

respective schools three (3) hours earlier

than the regularly

scheduled bus

departure time.

Historically, working on a fixed three-hour

advanced schedule across the Board

provides parents with greater clarity in

knowing that their children should be

arriving home three hours earlier than

normal on these days.

VOLUNTEERS

We love our volunteers and couldn’t do what we do without them! As noted on the

first-day packages, all volunteers must complete an information form that gives us

contact and medical information. This applies to all volunteers including drivers to

sporting events.

FOR SAFETY’S SAKE

Please call the school before 8:30 a.m. if your child is going to be absent. We have an answering

machine that is on 24 hours/day. This will reduce the number of call backs our secretaries need to

make. We track the attendance of all our students twice daily. If we don’t hear from you, and your

child is not in school, we will make every attempt to reach an adult to ensure the safety of our

students.

If your child is in danger of suffering a severe anaphylactic reaction to bee stings,

nuts or other allergies, please inform the office immediately so that an emergency

plan can be put in place to ensure that your child’s medical needs are met

immediately.

Please inform the school if there are special custody Orders for your child.

Please do not send medication to school with your child or do not place it in your

child’s backpack. All medication must be stored at the office with your written instructions for

administration, in accordance with DSBN Policy & Procedures. Please contact Mr. Mayhew for

further information.

Feel free to text our school cell phone at

905-933-5889

to relay attendance or other information!
