BORDERLINES

Notes from our County Commissioner - Claire Worth I hope you have all had a fantastic summer. Each time I come to write the article for September I am able to share with you the adventures our Guides and Senior Section girls have had on their

international adventure.

Lots of groups were able to take part in Adventures in Copenhagen and our County group had an amazing time travelling from London to Copenhagen via Paris, Berlin and Amsterdam.

View their adventures on Youtube

This time I was part of the summer international adventures and led our County India Group to Sangam. I will not say too much about our trip now but I do want to say a very big Thank You to everyone involved in these trips, not just the Leaders and girls on the trips but also the Leaders,

District and Division teams who all give their support.

The girls we have taken on these adventures do gain so much out of the trips but also speak to numerous people whilst we are on our travels and show what guiding is all about ... making the most of

opportunities, taking part in adventures, having fun and making friends around the world.

As we start to prepare for the term ahead make sure you ask the girls in your Districts to share their

adventures and inspire the next generation.

The first meeting is on 22 September 2016 and is your opportunity for you and your parents to ask for

help. All meetings are monthly on Thursday evenings at New Life Church Congleton from 7.15 - 9.15pm.

India 2016

We started our adventure back in 2015 at international selection weekend. After 15 months of fundraising and briefing weekends we finally met at The Premier Inn Manchester Airport where we had a little bit of sleep before checking in at the airport for our flight to Mumbai. We arrived in Mumbai and checked into our hotel at 3.00am, we were all glad to see our beds but would have liked longer than 5 hours sleep!

The next morning we met for breakfast and then set off to Pune by coach on a 5 hour drive.

We were the first group to arrive at Sangam to a very warm welcome, we were shown our dorms and even managed a quick dip in the pool after we had unpacked. Later in the evening groups arrived from Gloucestershire, Scotland and USA. Altogether 42 of us had travelled to take part in Creating Impact II – a community and leadership development

project.

On our first day we were told about the organizations we would be working with for our community action projects before heading off to Laxmi Road to shop for saris and bangles as well as having a go at bartering in the vegetable market. In the evening we had our international night with everyone doing

displays and entertainment, there was also lots of food being tasted and badge swapping.

On the Sunday we had the opportunity to go on a hike to Takona Fort (3500ft), this was an ‘easy’ climb but in the heat and humidity it proved to be quite a challenge. The view from the top was worth all the hard work and we had lunch, whilst protecting our food from the monkeys. The climb down was just as

challenging over the rocks, but at least it was a little quicker!

The next part of our adventure was working with our charity partners. There were four different projects taking place and we had people from our group taking part in each of the projects – these included teaching science to children on construction sites, running activities with special needs children to working with recycled waste. The time spent on the projects was thought provoking and a real challenge. We also participated in lots of workshops at Sangam about leadership development, Stop

the Violence and Free Being Me.

After leaving Sangam we flew to Delhi. We were shown around ‘Old Delhi’ visiting many historical sites as well as the Parliament buildings in New Delhi. Our next stop was Agra where we saw more monsoon rain than the rest of our trip put together and visited the Taj Mahal despite the floods. Then it was on to Jaipur to visit the Amber Palace, with transport provided by elephant ride. We also managed to do some jewellery shopping! Our trip around the Golden Triangle was amazing and we headed

back to Delhi for some final shopping and relaxation before our flight home.

We had a fantastic time and our adventure is nowhere near over with re-unions being planned with our own group and lots of the people we made

friends with at Sangam.

Thank you to everyone who helped us on our adventure.

TREFOIL GUILD STROLLERS

Our July walk was a ‘walk with a difference’ as we explored the Apedale Heritage Centre at Chesterton. Several intertwining paths led to the top of the hill where there was an enormous blue mining wheel and coal wagon to symbolise the local coal mining industry. The panoramic view was

amazing.

Later, we were intrigued by the ‘Brick’ room in the museum and were fascinated reading the various

accounts of heroism and life ‘down the pit’ in the local mining community.

We meet again on Monday 19 September 2016 at 10.30 am at the picnic area at the north end of

Errwood Reservoir in the Goyt Valley.

Map Ref. Explorer Map OL24 (White Peak area) 013 757. Lunch will be at The Cock Inn, Buxton Road, Whaley Bridge SK 23 7JE at 1.00 pm. Most of us bring a flask for ‘Elevenses’. Strong shoes and waterproofs are advisable. Trefoil members and friends are

welcome to join us to walk/lunch.

Leadership Qualification

Several completed files have been verified over the holidays - well done and thank

you to all those new Leaders and Mentors.

The next LQ support meeting is at Crewe (Union Street Baptist Church) on 29 September - please book your place through [email protected] . The

evening is open to all those working on the LQ and all Mentors and Commissioners.

Our County still has over 30 people who have been working on their LQ for over 1000 days - CAN YOU HELP? The qualification does not need to take more than 2 terms to complete but there are lots of circumstances that can delay matters. If you know of someone who is struggling to complete the qualification, please do offer to help – whether you are a Mentor or someone else in the unit. Please feel free to contact Jo Pierpoint, the Leadership Qualification Coordinator, so she can help resolve any

delays or if any extra support or training is required.

When planning a sleepover, after the venue, you then think about the theme. The theme is important because it has to be something that will engage the rainbows and also the Leaders running the event. Recent

films and story books are great places to start.

So, themes I think may be a big hit this year would be.........

There are some classics that if you have not done before are great fun.

You could also do general themed event.

These are equally as engaging (especially of the Rainbows chose it themselves)

Under the Sea Princesses and Pirates The Circus

But of course it is always best to chat to your Rainbows. They come up with great ideas for themes, food, crafts, activities and much

more. You will have a sleepover planned after 15 minutes of talking to your Rainbows.

If you are excited about the idea of taking your Rainbows on their first ever rainbow sleepover, have a chat with your unit Leaders

and Rainbows. See what they think. Then get in touch with the GAT team. You will not regret it!

Celebrating 100 years of the Senior Section

Girlguiding Cheshire Border Senior Section members and adults are heading to Liverpool on Saturday 17 September for our Region special event celebrating

100 years of the Senior Section .

All the Senior Section members will undertake some active community/social

action work during the day

These will include activities with families (mainly of refugees and asylum seekers), conservation and clean-ups at beaches and in woods, allotment

tidying, repairing footpaths at Formby beach, painting fences and at a foodbank helping to make up

food parcels in a warehouse.

After they’ve finished that - and changed! - they’ll be partying in the evening at Camp & Furnace in the

Baltic Triangle area of the city.
