New Strategic Direction for Alcohol and Drugs. Phase 2 Update Report - March 2013 DHSSPS, 2015. The first annual report of progress against the requirements of the cross-departmental strategy (2012) to reduce harm from substance misuse in Northern Ireland; while there are some encouraging signs - e.g. reductions in binge drinking and increased accessing of treatment and support services - alcohol/drug related hospital admissions and deaths remain high and monitoring will continue http://www.dhsspsni.gov.uk/pdf_version_-_nsd_phase_2_update_report-_march_2013.pdf UK Health Research Analysis 2014 UK Clinical Research Collaboration 2015, published by the Medical Research Council, ISBN 978-0-903730-20-4 This, the third report of the UK Health Research Analysis, builds on previous analyses and indicates that, while research funding continued to increase, the rate of growth has slowed; there has also been a decline in ‘basic’ (underpinning/aetiology) in favour of translational research, which explores prevention/detection and diagnosis/treatment development http://www.hrcsonline.net/sites/default/files/UKCRCHealthResearchAnalysis2014%20WEB.pdf Exploring the consumer perspective on antimicrobial resistance Wellcome Trust, June 2015. The aim of this research was to gain insight into how people think and feel about antibiotics, and their current understanding of the resistance issue; worryingly, findings indicate that most people have little awareness, or inaccurate understanding, of what antibiotic resistance actually means – assuming that the person becomes resistant, rather than the bacteria; the report recommends a change in the language used by health professionals in order to increase public awareness and engagement http://www.wellcome.ac.uk/stellent/groups/corporatesite/@policy_communications/documents/web_document/wtp059551.pdf Inequalities in life expectancy. Changes over time and implications for policy Buck, D. & Maguire, D. The King’s Fund, August 2015. ISBN: 978 1 909029 54 5. This report explores how the relationship between income deprivation and life expectancy has changed over time, and looks at the impact of other variables such as lifestyle behaviours and socioeconomic factors; while focusing on England, the authors highlight the need for more studies of this type - which, they advise, should be carried out in the individual UK countries http://www.kingsfund.org.uk/sites/files/kf/field/field_publication_file/inequalities-in-life-expectancy-kings-fund-aug15.pdf

Women and dementia. A global research review Alzheimer’s Disease International, June 2015. This report reviews published English language research literature on issues affecting women internationally, in relation to dementia; the condition disproportionately affects women – more women than men will develop dementia and they not only form the larger proportion of the older population, but also represent a large percentage of all informal carers, including a large number caring for people with dementia; the impact on women’s health and well-being is particularly marked in low/middle income countries; the report’s recommendations highlight the need for further research and policy amendment in this area http://www.alz.co.uk/sites/default/files/pdfs/Women-and-Dementia.pdf Women and dementia. A marginalised majority Alzheimer’s Research UK, March 2015. This report explores the unique impact of dementia on women, including the stress of living with dementia or caring for someone with the disease – often, after spending years caring for a loved one, female carers are themselves diagnosed with dementia, the leading cause of death among women in the UK http://www.alzheimersresearchuk.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/Women-and-Dementia-A-Marginalised-Majority1.pdf Join dementia research This website provides a major method of recruiting volunteers to take part in 100 ground-breaking dementia research projects across the UK; during the past year, there has been a large rise in people volunteering to take part in studies, giving scientists a huge advantage in their search for new treatments and boosting hopes of potentially finding a cure https://www.joindementiaresearch.nihr.ac.uk/
