Care After Death: guidance for staff responsible for care after death
Second edition, Hospice UK, April 2015
Noting the fact that there is only one opportunity to ensure good care after death,
this updated guidance has been endorsed by the Royal College of Nursing, Hospice
UK and the National Council for Palliative Care; it is aimed at the wide range of
professionals who care for people just before and after death - including mortuary
staff and funeral directors - and stresses the need for appropriate training to ensure
clear communication, and empathetic, respectful support for bereaved families, with
their individual needs and wishes

This is a three-year collaboration, funded by the European Union, and involving
universities in the UK, Germany, Spain and the Netherlands; the aim is to provide
education and professional development on sustainability issues in nursing so that
students can learn how resources, climate change, sustainability and health are
linked; a range of teaching and learning materials will be produced and will be freely
available via the project website

Although the need for culture change is recognised in health and social care, it
is not always clear how this can be achieved; the Foundation of Nursing Studies
is creating a number of freely accessible resources, based around a model in
the form of a rainbow; the first, a short animation, is available now and further
resources will be launched on 5th May 2015, covering – among others – areas
such as values and beliefs, action plans, staff well-being, and celebrating
success

Evaluating a major innovation in hospital design: workforce implications and

accommodation
Maben, J. et al. Published in Health Services and Delivery Research, 2015,
vol. 3, no. 3
This report examined the impact of moving from large wards/bays to 100% single-
room accommodation at the new Tunbridge Wells Hospital, the first NHS facility to
have been designed and built in this way; while patients generally prefer this
arrangement, staff report that – despite advantages of privacy – they feel more
anxious, finding difficulty, for example, in monitoring patients and communicating

Time for Dementia
This ground-breaking dementia education initiative was launched to 150 nursing
students at the University of Surrey on 25 March; it offers students a unique opportunity
to develop understanding of what life is like with dementia; they will visit families living
with dementia two or three times each year throughout their course, gaining insight
into the impact of long-term conditions, the role of family carers and interactions with
the wider health and social care system

from women’s experience of abortion for severe pregnancy sickness
British Pregnancy Advisory Service and Pregnancy Sickness Support, 2015
This report, based on the experiences of 71 women who had terminated a pregnancy
Please note that NIPEC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites
This report, based on the experiences of 71 women who had terminated a pregnancy
while suffering hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) over the past 10 years, states that poor
treatment of some extreme cases has led some women to make this choice, despite
availability of safe and effective treatments; the two organisations recommend that
women’s concerns should be taken seriously, avoiding stigma and guilt, with
medication risks weighed against those of not treating HG, especially if symptoms
are so severe that the mother considers termination
