President’s Corner

As spring peeks around the corner, National Capital Chapter activities are already in full swing! The February chapter meeting was a resounding success. Thank you to speakers Jeremy Linden and Roger Chang who each spoke about preservation, humidification, and design of sensitive spaces. Both the PES and the dinner presentation were riveting.

The Women in ASHRAE (WiA) Winter Social was also a wonderful success. Co-chairs Israa Ajam and

Laura Morder organized a mentorship activity during the event which connected younger engineers to mentors in a “speed dating” format. Our chapter should be proud to be leading the way on forward-thinking events such as this. I encourage both the men and women of our chapter to register for the spring event which is being planned for later April or early May.

NCC’s Student Activities Committee, co-chaired by Mikelann Scerbo and Michael Spencer, is also

second to none. I would like to thank Mikelann and Michael and the 16 volunteers that came out for the annual Discover Engineering Family Day, at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC. Hundreds of students came by ASRAE’s booth to participate in hands-on activities and be inspired to study engineering.

We are looking forward to the March chapter meeting on Wednesday, March 16th at the Hilton Arlington

in Ballston. The PES subject is Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems (DOAS) where three speakers, Chris Skoug, Omar Hawit, and James Brackett will discuss DOAS in hospital environments, museums and critical control environments, and with VRF systems, respectively. For dinner, we have a slight change in the original schedule, and look forward to SMACNA’s Executive Director, Eli Howard speaking on SMACNA HVAC duct construction standards. At the March meeting we will acknowledge NCC donors to ASHRAE Research and provide an update on our research promotion activities. Please remember to register before noon on Friday, March 11th if you plan to attend in order to take advantage of the early registration discount.

Lastly, don’t forget to register for the upcoming Young Engineers in ASHRAE (YEA) social which will

be held on Thursday, May 10th at Penn Social in Washington, DC. The focus of this joint event with the DC Chapter of the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) is to connect emerging professionals in a relaxed environment. Thank you for your support of our chapter activities! Best Regards,

Laura Petrillo-Groh President – National Capital Chapter 2015 - 2016

Local News: The Women in ASHRAE (WiA) committee hosted their Winter Networking Social on Wednesday, February 10th at Ping Pong Dim Sum Restaurant in Washington DC. It was a great success with about 45 people in attendance and a generous sponsorship provided by Sebesta! The group shifted its focus to mentoring to help members make real connections through a speed-dating type activity. Their next event will be later this spring – please stay tuned for further details! .

Society & National News: Israa Ajam is currently serving on an Ad-hoc committee within ASHRAE where she is working with Jennifer Leach and Dunstan Macauley to officially integrate WiA on a Society level. This committee is planning to make an official motion later this year to gain additional support. The National Capital Chapter has learned that ASHRAE Chapters across the country are now starting to establish their own WiA committees in areas like Southern California and Saint Louis and we have also found that ASPE is forming a Women of ASPE (WoA) group to mimic what is happening with WiA. Great things are happening in our community and we should feel so proud to be a part of it!

I Have Seen the City of Tomorrow By: Mark Menzer [email protected] Throughout the year NCC ASHRAE brings to our attention many opportunities to bring STEM to life for the students of today, who will be the engineers of tomorrow. Recently, I answered an NCC request for volunteers and on Presidents Day I took part in judging the national Future City competition in DC. In building their model cities, these middle schoolers had to consider future technologies, zoning, governance, energy sources, transportation, and recreation opportunities – everything a city planner might consider. This year’s focus was on solid waste disposal and reuse. The real treat for the judges was the opportunity to see these 3-student teams present their work, not in a mundane PowerPoint presentation, but in the form of a skit or some other 12 minute performance. Their model cities were made from mostly recycled parts and had to incorporate some moving elements. In the Q&A session that followed each presentation, these 6th to 8th graders showed their poise and mastery of the subject. The experience left all of us judges -- engineers of various disciplines -- hopeful knowing that tomorrow’s crop of engineers will come well prepared to lead us to a sustainable future. It was a great experience and I’ll be looking for other NCC members to share the fun next year.

Student Activities Off to a Great Start in 2016!  We had an awesome event on February 10, 2016 demonstrating the importance of communication in engineering by playing telephone Legos with an after-school program at Maury Elementary in Washington, DC. ASHRAE members Alfred Uzokwe, Javier Cifuentes, Sean Ek, Dave Noland and your Co-Chairs of Student Activities Michael Spencer and Mikelann Scerbo, all empathized with the students’ challenge to work as a team. It was so much fun for us to help each team of students coordinate with one another. You could be part of fun shown below by getting involved this year too!
