Approximately 75 percent of California’s solid waste generation is from commercial sources. These include commercial, industrial, and construction/demolition activities. On July 1, 2012, California Assembly Bill 341 mandated any business generating more than four (4) cubic yards of solid waste a week must recycle. Starting a recycling program is not the same for every business; however the first step is to assess the materials (or waste) that your business generates. Then choose the right size of both trash and recycling bins that will suit your needs. Finally, and most importantly, educating your staff on the right materials for each bin. While the steps can be few they are important. Burrtec recycling coordinators can assist your business in making those decisions, along with the necessary education and outreach to your employees and management staff. Call our customer service department today at 661-222-2249 to schedule a complimentary waste and recycling assessment. This will take approximately 20 to 30 minutes, depending on size of business and waste/recycling needs. Outdoor Guidelines: a) Repair all leaks in irrigation systems immediately. b) Use the most water-efficient irrigation, including drip irrigation when appropriate. c) Choose drought-tolerant vegetation to minimize the need for irrigation. d) Group plants and trees with similar water needs together for most efficient irrigation. e) Use mulch on exposed soil to lessen evaporation. f) Water in early morning hours or late evening. Optimal hours for residential customers to water are between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. to avoid wind and excessive water loss from evaporation. Adjust run times to minimum values. 11-20150901-SC-CommBin-05

Commercial Recycling Programs — Let Us Help!Approximately 75 percent of California’s solid waste generation is from commercial sources. These include commercial, industrial, and construction/demolition activities. On July 1, 2012, California Assembly Bill 341 mandated any business generating more than four (4) cubic yards of solid waste a week must recycle.

Reusable BagsCurrently, Californians use more than 19 billion plastic grocery bags and merchandise bags every year, which generates over 147,000 tons of unnecessary waste. More than 6 billion of these bags are used by Los Angeles County residents, which equates to approximately 600 bags a year, per person. As a consumer, you can make the decision to take reusable bags every time you shop. Retail facilities can encourage customers to reduce plastic and paper bag waste by offering reusable bags to their customers!

Scavenging Hurts BusinessesWhether it’s called “dumpster diving” or scavenging, it is the unauthorized removal of solid waste materials placed in a designated container at a designated location for the purposes of collection and processing by an authorized agent. Removal of materials from a bin may increase the cost of collection services! Materials placed in a recycling bin have a value; however, that value is used to offset collection and processing costs. When a scavenger breaks the law and removes those materials they are also removing any value associated with the recycling program, which ultimately affects rates.

If you see a scavenger, do not approach them! Get a description of the person and/or vehicle with license plate number or take a picture. Call Burrtec at 661-222-2249 or send a picture to 26000 Springbrook Avenue, Suite 101, Santa Clarita, CA 91350. Please help us protect your rates, do not give permission to scavengers to take recyclables.

Alternative Fueling StationsWith California working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the popularity of alternative fuel vehicles is on the rise. Just like conventional gas-powered cars, these vehicles need to be refueled and recharged. Santa Clarita has several alternative fueling stations available and is continually adding more. There is currently a compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station at the Transit Maintenance Facility and several options for electric vehicle charging around the valley.

The newest electric vehicle charging station at Canyon Country Plaza is now up and running!

It is located at 19186 Soledad Canyon Rd Canyon Country, CA 91351

It has three ports: EV Plug (J1772), CHAdeMO DCFC, and SAE Combo DCFC

It is open 24/7 and has NRG EVgo membership pricing

For locations of the CNG station or other electric vehicle charging stations in the Santa Clarita Valleycheck out our page on GreenSantaClarita.com.

If you’re leaving the Santa Clarita Valley, you can find other alternative fueling station locations across California and other

states by clicking on the following links:http://carstations.com/
