Remodeling A Craftsman Home

This project is a good example of how the architectural details of an older, craftsman style home were preserved while modernizing and updating three important rooms.

It all starts with ideas, products, colors and looks collected in the form of pages clipped from magazines or photos saved to an ideabook from Houzz. Pictured is an example of a design board used for a small craftsman home in need of a remodel. The homeowner liked the look and colors of the living room pictured on the design board, especially the elements such as the curves, windows and fireplace. They also wanted to keep the craftsman architectural details of their home while improving and refreshing the functionality of the kitchen, home office and master bath.

Reworking The KitchenThe hardwood flooring, wood cabinetry, decorative legs, corbels and mouldings, in combination with the glass mullioned cabinet doors and windows create a harmonizing craftsman motif that complement the room’s earthy color scheme. The diamond-shape tile

pattern was carried through on the two backsplashes, and on the primary wall in the eating nook with banquette seating.

The thoughtful use of mouldings, combined with the stainless appliances creates a polished look. Craftsman elements were added here and there, and the straight, uncomplicated lines neatly frame the farmhouse sink.

toekicks, open shelving and dimensional changes can make a space feel fully custom. The built-in seating area blends right into the bookshelves.

The soft, neutral palette and diamond detail in the tile backsplash is carried throughout the three-room remodel.

Bedroom Converts to an Office An extra bedroom was turned into a cozy home office. The stunning fireplace area (from the magazine photo on the design board) with its wall niche and graceful curves was recreated. A built-in bookcase, along with the furniture-style desk and credenza provides a traditional look for modern tools and functionality. The rug also picks up the colors from the tile backsplash and walls in the kitchen and master bath.

Master Bath Gets RefreshedThe architectural details of the home were embraced with the use of a complementary stained glass window and dual vanity mirrors in the bathroom. The tile pattern from the kitchen is now on the floor in the master bath.

Crafstman details, such as the mouldings around the windows and the divided upper section, were repeated in the cabinetry

Love elements of modern design and farmhouse style? You’re in luck–these completely different styles comple-ment each other with a blend of old and new that comes across both warm and cool. Here’s how to achieve this style combination:

Balance natural and industrial materials. Farmhouse design relies on natural materials such as weathered wood, stone and brick, while modern homes utilize the sleek finishes that chrome, stainless steel and granite give off. This kitchen blends a rustic wood ceiling and large windows with sleek cabinets and slab countertops.

Use a neutral color palette. Keep the focus on the architectural elements in the room by maintaining a subdued color palette of neutrals. You can introduce small splashes of color here and there using greenery or maybe a citrus-inspired centerpiece of lemons and limes.

Add barn doors. Instantly bring country charm into your home by swapping out a regular interior door for a sliding barn-style door (this works especially well for a pantry or laundry area). This door becomes the focal point of any room, and can be balanced out with contemporary elements like stainless steel faucets or granite countertops.

Decorate With Autumn Hues As summer gives way to autumn, it’s time to re-think your home’s color palette. The summer months were all about bright, cheery accessories, but fall is a great time to embrace warmer tones like browns, golds, or reds. Here are a few cre-ative ways to bring the colors of autumn into your home:

Make a bold statement by painting a wall or ceiling in a deep accent color like red or gold, or bronze. These cozy hues can make your home feel more intimate.

Give your kitchen design a splash of color by updating the chair cushions at your table. Consider forest green cushions and coordinate them with a centerpiece of fresh ferns.

Update your couch by swapping out your summer pillows for the colors of fall. Choose one hue, whether it’s orange, red or yellow, and use a mix of solids and patterns.

Transform your front door with a fresh coat of autumn- inspired paint. If you have space, add a container of hardy plants and a chair with an outdoor cushion in a complementary color to create a warm welcome.

3 Places For Kitchen LightingA single overhead light, or even a row of track lights, is not ideal for a kitchen. Central lighting can cast shadows that make it difficult to see, and can make some tasks dangerous to perform (like anything with a sharp knife). Here are a few areas that should have additional lighting:

Above the island. The kitchen island is not only a workspace, it’s where your family and guests gather. Because the island is typically in the center of the kitchen, this is a great place for pretty, decorative fixtures.

Under cabinets. Bring light to your kitchen countertops by adding task lighting underneath your custom cabinets. This brightens up your prep space, allowing you to chop produce and read recipes easily.

Over the cooktop. Adding lights around your cooktop will make the primary task easier, but will also showcase a beautiful backsplash design.

Don’t forget dimmers! Look at the lights throughout your home to see which ones you can put on dimmers–it’s a great way to add ambience and cut energy use.

While kitchen cabinets and drawers are essential for keeping items organized, there are other ways to keep your pots, pans, tools (and more) neat and tidy–while putting it all on display:

Paint the wall behind your open shelves with chalkboard paint, then write on the wall to show where everything goes. In addition to ending confusion while unloading the dishwasher, your dinnerware will look striking against the dark backdrop.

Don’t have a pantry? Bring a bookshelf into the kitchen. You can store your cookbooks there, of course, but all those shelves are perfect for showing off colorful mixing bowls or that great retro-design toaster. Baskets, bins and glass jars can hold chips, pasta, cereal and baking ingredients.

Tuck a bar cart into a corner to hold larger pots, your blender, or other oversize cooking gear. Create your own coffeehouse on the top shelf, with air-tight canisters for beans, a grinder, carafe, and mugs.

Have lots of wall space? Attach a bar with hooks, or a section of pegboard, to hang tools, towels, oven mitts, even pans!
