Welcome to the September edition of Darlington Together. Social media is a wonderful thing – ever since the Council started out on Twitter and Facebook five years ago, it’s opened up a completely new way to connect with residents and businesses, as well as answer questions and resolve problems. Although it was bad news that Darlington in Bloom was originally cancelled due to a lack of entries, it is great news that we’ve been able to bring the competition to social media, with green-fingered residents being able to email photos of their gardens to us.You can now vote for your favourite garden, window boxes and allotments on Facebook – visit page 19 for more information. May the best gardens win! The Festival of Thrift takes place at the end of the month and it will be bigger and better than last year’s event. Not only will it provide a fun weekend of entertainment and bring people from far-and-wide into the town, it will give people tips about saving money and get them thinking about sustainability – something which is more important than ever before. I thoroughly enjoyed the bacon-making course last year and have my eye on the bread-making course this year! Check out our pull-out-and-keep article on pages 23- 26 which contains information about what to see and do at the festival. In last month’s Leader’s Column, I mentioned about our vision for the Head of Steam museum and how we should celebrate Darlington as the birthplace of the railways. If you turn to page 31 you can find out more about what we are planning and how you can share your views and ideas. Darlington has so much heritage and history; let’s celebrate it! Did you know that Darlington has one of themost diverse town centres in the country andis ranked in the top 3% of UK shopping venues?

A recent survey showed that while the town is luckyenough to host 24 of the 27 high street chains likeNext and House of Fraser, 80% of the town’s shopsremain independent and it’s this mix that makesDarlington so unique.

Not to mention the 88 listed buildings, a significantnumber of which are on High Row including Barclay’s,Natwest and Yorkshire Bank.

And the town centre just keeps getting better withretailers choosing to open second premises inDarlington rather than locate outside the town.

Husband and wife team, Stefano and Emma Foffanowho have run Foffano’s Italian restaurant on themarket square for seven years were keen to expandtheir business. Rather than look outside the Boroughthey chose a spot above the historic Victorian marketand recently opened Little Foffano’s Deli.

Stefano says: “Darlington is a fantastic town as it’s got atown centre steeped in history and there’s a lot to drawpeople in.

“I was keen to open a second business here as I felt therewas a gap in the market. The covered market has proved agood place to set-up as it’s within close proximity toFoffano’s restaurant so compliments it very well and thesupport from other traders has been brilliant, they’realmost like a big family.”

“Last year’s Festival of Thrift demonstrated on a national levelwhat a creative, innovative and community focused townDarlington is. For me, it showed that you don’t have to ‘makedo with what you have’, you can improve it, make it better oreven turn it into something completely different.

This year, I am looking forward to getting creative, I amespecially looking forward to Navigation North’s ‘Trash &Treasure: Art Bazaar’ where one person’s trash could be anartistic masterpiece to you. Also being a lover of the 1960s, Iam looking forward to delving into the vintage goodies stalls.

In the meantime, If you want to get thrifty in Darlington, I canrecommend visiting the Scrap Studio team who can even makemusical instruments fromrecycled materials.”

Spotlight on...

New foster carers Debbie and Tony Castle havebeen fostering since March 2014 and fosterchildren up to five years old, including siblings. They already have three grown up children and asix year old of their own.

They decided to take up fostering with Debbie havingpreviously been a child minder, so their young son wasused to having other children in the house, he is “a reallycaring little boy, and takes it all in his stride, he loves it”.

To people considering fostering they said “just go for it,we kept thinking ‘is the time right?’ but if you think about ittoo much you might never do it. So far we’ve found it tiring, but brilliant”.

They have joined the Darlington Foster Carer’sAssociation, which is a support network for fostercarers and their own children, as well as for fosterchildren, which Debbie says “really helps you feel likeyou’re not doing this alone, that you have support”.

Debbie says “I wanted to make a difference to the lives ofchildren in Darlington, and fostering is a great way to do it”.

To find out more visit:www.darlington.gov.uk/fostering or contact theFamily Placement Service on 01325 [email protected]

No matter who you are, or what you do,fostering could be for you. There aremany different ways that you can fosterchildren, and the amount of time andcommitment can vary greatly. Forexample if you choose to foster veryyoung children you can expect yourexperience to be very hands on, but if youdo respite for teenagers then your rolecould be a lot less intense. Ourassessment process will make sure thatyour foster role suits you and your familywhile at the same time provides supportfor our children and young people.

Over the next few months we’ll be looking at a selection of fostercarers from varied backgrounds and with varied experiences.

Next month sees a doublecelebration for older peoplein Darlington with OlderPerson’s Day (1 October)and National GrandparentsDay (5 October).

People are living longer and23% of the UK will be aged 65and over by 2035. Long goneare the images of frail oldpeople, many are activelyinvolved in their local community and keep fit.

Here in Darlington, one group of older folk areleading the way. They meet every Wednesday at theGem exercise class which takes place in the artgallery in Crown Street library from 2-3pm. The classhas been running for three years and its following hasgrown and grown. Class leader, Dawn Harris puts itsuccess down to the friendly nature of the group andthe fact that they all come to ‘have a laugh’.

Dawn says: “It’s lovely to see people move from being shywhen they first arrive to being part of a fantasticfriendship group and really coming out of themselves. They’re such a friendly bunch and it’s not just about the

exercise class, it’s about the socialside too as we go on a range oftrips. They’re all real charactersand I look forward to Wednesdayafternoons, knowing that I amgoing to see them all.”

Two attendees, Eileen Patan, 78and John Roberts, 69 evenfound romance at the groupand still enjoy attending theGEM sessions together.

While Margaret Bramley, 75, has been attending theclasses for over 3 years now. She says: “I hadn’texercised for many years and decided I needed to changethat. I attended one of the GEM sessions and enjoy it somuch I now never miss a week. I have made some lovelyfriends – we often go out for the day or meet up for acoffee or meal out. I can truly say the class has changedmy life and we have such a laugh.”

There are a wide range of classes specifically designedfor people aged 50+ at the Dolphin Centre, plusother GEM classes in and around Darlington. Call theHealthy Darlington Team for more information on01325 388829 or email [email protected]

When bills are piling up, borrowing moneyfrom a loan shark or getting a log book loancan seem like a good idea. But these loans arehigh interest, which means you can end uppaying back three or four times more than youborrowed.

And with a logbook loan, if payments are not kept up,your car could be taken away from you. Both of thesetypes of loans are risky and should be avoided.

Safer loan alternatives do exist and Darlington has anexcellent example of this. Darlington Credit Unionoffers affordable loans even if you have no previouscredit history.

Signing up for membership is easy and can be doneby popping into their Town Centre office or to theTown Hall Customer Contact Centre. You can evensign up online. The Credit Union has become sopopular it has seen its membership in Darlington riseto over 4,000 people, who find it to be a safe way tosave and borrow.

Anyone can end up in a mess withmoney, but turning to high interest andlogbook loans could leave you strugglingto keep your head above water.

Don’t take the plunge withloan sharks

Get on Board!

Darlington is famed as the birthplace of thepassenger railway and we want residents tohelp us celebrate and make the most of thisrich heritage. To do this we are working on avision to create a visitor experience based onthe railways, with The Head of Steam RailwayMuseum at the centre of it.

This could include workshops, shops, cafes, restaurants, themed play areas and much more. Thevision for the town with links to Shildon and

Stockton, will be achieved in time for 2025 – tocelebrate 200 years since the birth of the passengerrailway.

We would like as many people as possible to “get onboard” and let us know what they would like to see inthe vision so there will be a series of events andopportunities where you can get involved and makeyour views and ideas known to us. These will thenfeed into the final plan for a railway heritage site.
