Welcome to the May edition of Darlington Together. Summer is very nearly here, which means that the Community Carnival is just around the corner. Last year’s parade was a huge success, with hundreds of people taking part, and even more coming to line the route and watch the procession – if that doesn’t show the community spirit that the people of Darlington have, I don’t know what does! If you would like to find out how to take part in this year’s event, please read page 19. If you live or work in the town centre, no doubt you will have seen how the Department for Education building is coming along. Every time I go along to the Town Hall, it seems to have grown that little bit more. It will be great to welcome 400 jobs to the town centre. If you’re on Twitter, you can see how the work is progressing by following @feethamsoffice. Speaking of the town centre, we’re on the lookout for new market stall holders. If you have a fledgling business why not get in touch with our markets team and see what they can do for you? There’s more information on pages 24 and 25. And finally, good news for people who live in rural areas of Darlington, who will have access to Superfast Broadband by the end of the year – you can find out more on page 21. Rural communities often suffer when it comes to internet access, so it’s great to hear that the funding application was successful and that residents of these communities will be able to access broadband to help them work and study. Thanks to all who were involved. Businesses and villagers in rural communitiesare celebrating as they will soon have access toSuperfast Broadband.

Thanks to a successful Rural Community BroadbandFunding application, people living in Merrybent, HighConniscliffe and Piercebridge in the West of theBorough and Bishopton and the Staintons in the Eastof the Borough will benefit from internet speeds of upto 24mb per second.

Their current internet speed is on average 2mb, but inmany areas it can dip as low as 0.5mb per second sothis will be a big improvement and is good news forpeople who work from home or run a business.

To support the application, residents pulled togetherto present a business case for the technology to beput in place. The new cables are due to be laidtowards the end of the year and residents can thenchoose which provider they access it through.

Eunice Keeligan who lives in Merrybent and worksfrom home two days per week, says: “I support somekey payment processes within my organisation so it’simperative that I can rely on the internet to receive andsend quickly. This has hindered me in the past and I’ve hadto travel into work to process urgent payments.

“On a personal level, working on the internet has beenchallenging at best so I am looking forward to roamingaround the various sites without screens freezing and evencrashing. It’s been a quite a lengthy process to get thisagreed and I would like to thank all involved for taking upthe cause for those of us in the small villages and farms. It is very much appreciated.”

Councillor Chris McEwan, Cabinet Member forEconomy and Regeneration says: “The internet plays anincreasingly important part in making rural communitiesmore sustainable so this is great news for those who relyon the internet to work from home, run a business oraccess education.

“Effective broadband is key to bringing economic growthto Darlington. Benefits to residents and businesses areenormous and small & medium enteprisess in particularwill be able to take advantage of new opportunitiesleading to regeneration and job creation.”

More urban areas of Darlington like the town centreand Central Park Enterprise Zone are also set to fromSuperfast Broadband, which will be in place by October.

The Rural Community Broadband Fund is funded byDefra, the EU and Broadband Delivery UK andprovides grants to establish fibre broadband in hardto reach areas.

In February youngsters in Darlington had thechance to vote for a young person to representthe town in the UK Youth Parliament. Theychose 14 year old Danny Brown, who we hadthe chance to catch up with en route to one ofhis first meetings. Here’s how it went:

Firstly, congratulations on being voted in asDarlington’s Member of Youth Parliament(MYP). How does it feel?Well, when I first found out I won I was just amazed. There were six other candidates, so a lot ofcompetition, and there were a lot of responses, 4000in total. I was amazed how far it went. I’m excited tomake changes for young people in Darlington.

How did you persuade young people to votefor you?I put up a lot of posters in places I know youngpeople go to, emailed youth groups such as scouts, and then there was word of mouth, which was a bigpart of it.

Why did you decide to run for this position?I always try to get my voice heard and this is anexcellent opportunity. If you’ve got opinions youshouldn’t complain about things if you’re not willing totry and change them. It’s easy to moan, it’s not so easyto actually do something.

Tell us a bit about what you hope to achieveI had three Manifesto points; health, activities andevents and employment. For health I want tointroduce a texting system to answer worries andquestions that youths have about themselves. Foractivities and events I want to make Darlington amore youth friendly place. Because of budget cuts etc.it seems more focused on the working population andI want to make it a bit more equal, for example we’vebeen talking about working in conjunction with theFestival of Thrift in September as it’s one of the majorevents of the year.

I also want to promote the idea of small starter jobs, making Saturday or weekend jobs seem moreappealing to young people. Getting down to youngpeople’s level and helping them realise that you reallydo need a job, whether it’s for university fees or justsupporting yourself, and having experience will help.

Didn’t you have long flowing hair last time wesaw you?I made a deal with a classmate that I’d get it cut off ifshe could get 100 signatures. She got over 100 in fiveminutes.

Finally, do you have a short message for theyoung people of Darlington? There’s always a chance to get involved, you’ve justgot to look for it.

Danny will be producing a video blog in conjunctionwith C:The Box so you can keep up with his progress.

It’s a great way to get and stay healthy and happy, iseasy to fit into your daily life, can be done almostanywhere, at any time – for free – and it’s great forthe environment.

Walking helps to reduce blood pressure, tone muscle, strengthen bones, helps to control weight, boostenergy levels and improve mood. Research shows thatchildren who walk to school are more alert and readyto learn than those who are driven there.

The Hummersknott Ward Councillor, whohas served as a councillor for more than13 years, hosted a series of events, including the annual Mayor’s Ball, andraised over £10,000 for local charities.

He said:“It has been an incredible year. I have met manypeople from all walks of life, made new friends andlearnt so much. It was a huge honour to be involvedin the 60th anniversary of Town Twinning and I wasproud to represent my home town of Darlington.

“My aim was to plan one public event every month, above and beyond what was usually expected, with aview to encouraging people to visit the iconicbuildings and venues across the Borough. Thisincluded South Park, St. Cuthbert’s Church, CentralHall and the Civic Theatre where we hosted a sell-outperformance of Darlington Operatic Society’s StrictlyMusicals.

“I knew it was going to be a busy year but it hasexceeded all my expectations. There have beenevents almost every day, some days up to four. Ihave covered the whole of the region and beyond;from Blyth in the North to Ripon in the South andfrom Cumbria in the West to Redcar in the East; notforgetting our visit to Mülheim. Of course, Mayorsfrom all these areas have visited Darlington in return, taking a good message away with them.

“The theme of my year has been Civic Pride and Ihope I have helped increase this by hosting events, getting people to visit local venues perhaps for thefirst time, and working hard to get the messageacross to local people that Darlington is a wonderfulplace to live in and we should be proud of what wehave.

“It has been a team effort between myself, my wifeCarol and my Mayoral Officer David Allaway. AdaBurns and her team at the Town Hall have allworked hard to make my year a success and I wouldlike to thank everyone who has helped throughsponsoring and supporting events in many ways.”

Town and Co“If I have made people more aware of whatDarlington has to offer and hopefully increasedpride in our town then I can stand down asMayor knowing the job has been well done.”

Hot on the heels of a year of Civic pride, follows a year of rural pride. This is one of theaims of Councillor Gerald Lee as he takes upthe helm as Mayor of Darlington this month.

Ward Councillor for Heighington for 15 years,Councillor Lee is passionate about the greatoutdoors and is keen in his Mayoral year to spreadthe word around the whole borough.

One way he is planning to achieve this is throughthe Borders Bike Ride on Sunday 15 June.

The 40 mile ride will take in the outskirts ofDarlington and give keen cyclists the chance to seewhat the outlying areas of the Borough have tooffer. Past Borders rides were always popular andCouncillor Lee wants to revive this in his own style.

Registration for the ride will be £5 and furthersponsorship would be appreciated. The entrancefee will entitle the rider to free refreshment stopsand the use of a back-up vehicle if needed. Lessexperienced riders can take part in the Family 12 mile ride around South Park. Children under 12can enter for free. Details are available from theDolphin Centre or from the website:www.darlington.gov.uk/borderbikeride

All money raised will go to the Mayor’s chosencharities.

Councillor Lee said:

“I am really excited about my year in office andalongside representing the whole of the Borough, I amkeen to show a different side of Darlington - the ruralareas. I want people to get outdoors and see what is ontheir doorstep. They can do this by taking part in theBorders Bike Ride next month or even by taking part ina litter pick or a nice country walk. As Chair of LitterfreeDurham and a litter picker of many years, I ampassionate about keeping our town and countryside freeof litter. Our Big Spring Clean supported by Darlingtonand Durham councils, is a simple and effective way for alllike-minded people to clean up their own communities.

“I am also excited about the poppy seed project wheremore than 1.5 million poppy seeds will be planted across

the Borough to commemorate the Centenary of the FirstWorld War. I want to see the whole Borough ablaze in asea of red to help remember those who have perished inall wars and who are currently serving in the armedforces.”
