Coaching program

Club President Cont —

TIM RYAN

We are now 7 weeks out from the Coolangatta Gold. Training continues to be going well with some tough sessions being

completed.

This Friday September 6th

, there will be an education seminar on nutrition and motivation (that is open to all members). The

seminar will be held in the Black Swan room commencing at 4.30pm.

Well done to the Pool lifesaving team who finished 2nd

in the overall point score at the recent Australian Titles.

Chelsea Gillett has just finished 7th in the 200m freestyle at the World Junior Swimming Titles. Alyce Burnett has performed

strongly across all events at the World Kayak Championships Well done girls!

COACHES CORNER—NATHAN GREIG [email protected] 0426211021

Special thanks to Phil Lyons, for organising First Aid, Noel Messer - Radios, Ian Layton- IRB, Mike Dwyer and Kerri

Smith.

Ten Members recently attended a three day conference on the Gold Coast with Surf Life Saving Queensland. A lot was

learnt over the three days and we all attended as many sessions as we could. We will hopefully put everything learnt into

practice over the next few months.

Everyone would now be aware our new General Manager Craig Thomas has started and been on deck for 9 weeks now

and has made substantial changes to our Supporters Club and Lifesaving Administration. Please come and see our new

look Supporters Club and a new menu. On the Lifesaving Administration side Michelle’s office is now occupied by sever-

al staff and anything Lifesaving is now through the main reception which is open 10am to midnight, 7 days a week. We

have had some teething problems but we are getting there.

Other news around the club is the tender documents for 2018 World Titles arrived on my desk this week so Myself, Scott

Derwin and representatives from Mooloolaba and Alexandra Headland Surf Life Saving Clubs have a mammoth task in

front of us for the next 8 months to try and bring this to the Sunshine Coast.

Lastly thanks to all the participants who made themselves available for our 2013 Think Tank it was a hugely successful

day where some good future strategies and ideas were formed. Working Groups are now in progress to implement strat-

egies which were spoken about. Thanks to Mike Dwyer for facilitating this work group.

It has also come to note again that Members are giving access to the Gym to non Club Members. As has been said and

written on numerous occasions in the past do not allow this practice to happen as there will be consequences that will

effect our Club with liability concerns. It really is a big problem and please desist.

IRB NEWS—IAN LAYTON [email protected] 0413125244

When the Row for Cancer event is on you know it’s not long before the summer season kicks in. On the matter of Row for Can-

cer we tried this year to split the day into 2 shifts and as it turned out it sort of worked, 16 people put their hands up to help out

and I’m very thankful for your help. Some of us also got an early season reminder about checking your fuel line before you

head out, hey Elle.

At the time of producing this newsletter it is still unclear if an IRBD course will commence Saturday 7th of September, I will ar-

range to contact those who have registered interest one way or the other and advise.

IRB training will soon follow a yearly training calendar as close as possible in the future and hopefully this will make it easier for

those who want to do their drivers or crewie’s award by knowing the starting dates. If you are unsure please contact me and I

will chase down the information you need.

Apart from that hope you all enjoy summer 2013 – 2014.

See you on the beach, safe Boating.

The starters gun has fired and the new season will start on Saturday the 21st September. The first patrol roster is out, as is the

makeup of patrols. I dare say that there will have to be a few changes but I will try to keep them to a minimum.

Proficiency is also on the 8th September, so get your pool certificates and go online to do the online part of proficiency and join us

at 8am on the 8th.

We are also having a club lunch on the 7th, the first of the year, as a means of getting people together and setting things up for

the season ahead.

When you arrive you will see we now have a second ATV, and hopefully the new Arena will be finished in time for the season start. The new one will be very different and will be much lighter and easier to manoeuvre than the old one which we plan to con-vert to a Barbie trailer.

Please make sure you register with Michelle for proficiency and note that IRB proficiency will follow immediately after the main proficiency. You also need to notify Michelle if you plan to do that one.

The events in the off season have all run well and Maroochydore has been well represented in them all.

With a rejuvenated beach I hope we all have a great season.

I look forward to catching up with you all in times ahead.

This month has been dominated by Pool Rescue State and National Titles. We remain Branch and State Champions

and but for 7 points would have been National Title holders again. So well done to all those who committed to the Pool

Rescue Events this season. Sue Baxter-Winch , John and the Team have once again given of their time and their dedi-

cation is truly amazing. Sue’s report will detail the Clubs success.

With endurance events drawing near , the Coolangatta Gold , Dolphin Classic , State Endurance , Nutri Grain Trials and

Branch Trials just around the corner its all systems go. We are entering 6 teams in the Gold with teams to be an-

nounced this week. Three individuals have entered the grueling course Dahlas and Lana Rogers and Steve Dunn ,

good luck and good racing to you all, we will be there to support and cheer you on.

Fundraising for Worlds and Surf Sports is well under way but we can do more so if you are able to help or have an

idea , please get involved. A roster for the Saturday Lunch time raffle will be formulated this week so you all have a

chance to raise funds to support the Club and your own wallets.

Entries to Senior carnivals is only available through contacting me at [email protected] , contacting the

office or the coaches and telling them that you want to enter will not ensure your entry , so avoid disappointment.

This month has seen the tragic passing of another lifesaver on the Gold Coast our thoughts and wishes go to the family

and to his wider family in Lifesaving .

Let us all be vigilant and keep a lookout for each other in and out of the water.

We look like having all the old crews back and a few

new ones.

Pat Maguire has returned to Maroochydore as a Bris-

bane based sweep and has been on the recruitment

trail.

Sunday Morning rows have commenced at the Club.

We would love to see some of the younger guys around

the Club come down for a row.

Anyone interested in rowing can contact me on mobile

POOL RESCUE

SUE BAXTER—WINCH For the die hard Maroochydore Athletes backing up to represent the club during the winter months, their efforts have been repaid.

This year we ran bi-weekly training sessions - Saturday at Nambour Aquatic Centre and Wednesday at UQ Aquatic Centre, with participation levels grow-ing to 48 Athletes this season. Thank you to Mark Branch (Nambour) and Jae Marr (UQ) for the generous provision of lanes for the Maroochydore Pool Rescue Athletes. The season consisted of 3 Championships where we achieved the following outstanding results.

Full results for states can be found at: http://sls.com.au/sites/sls.com.au/files/results%20final%20all%20days.pdf Those were the facts and figures, now for the personal side of the team. Every team member played their part and with so many solid performances over the season, it’s hard to name everyone. My personal highlights were not only the athletes who were multiple Australian record breakers and gold medal-lists but the athletes who proudly put their hands up to be reserves and equipment setters. Lead by our Captains Sam Bell and Pamela Hendry the true depth of talent and Club spirit was very evident throughout the season. Pool Rescue is certainly a discipline that encompasses the whole of Club. It was no more evident than this year with ‘oldest’ and ‘youngest’ team members at Nationals being the father and son athletes, John & Zane Baxter. Congratu-lations to our Individual gold medallists and World Class swims at Nationals by Chelsea Gillett, Dahlas Rodgers, Harmarna Williams, Pamela Hendry, Sam Bell and Summer Short.

Pool Rescue is an important discipline for Branch, State and National Team Selection. The club is privileged to have Sam Bell, Pamela Hendy and Chel-sea Gillett all selected on the Rescue 2014 Australian Life Saving Squad. From this squad, teams are selected to compete at a number of overseas meets culminating in the final team selected to represent Australia at Rescue 2014, the international pinnacle of Life Saving sport.

This season, John Winch and my eighth Pool season with Maroochydore, was a culmination of years of building the discipline at the Club. We had an unprecedented number of parents and supporters all willing to put their hands up without needing to be asked. To the parents always at training, time-keeping or equipment handling, thank you. Thanks Alyce Burnett for your coordination of the nipper entries, all while on the other side of the world – don’t you just love technology. Thanks to Jae Marr and the entire Maroochydore team for stepping up on the Seniors day of State Championships when the entire Baxter/Winch Families were called unexpectedly to rally following the passing of our father.

A special thanks to Rob Elford and Nathan McGrath for all their efforts and support with training, nominations, uniforms and being on the ground at each of the Events. For those who witnessed the Pool Rescue Season I’m sure every family involved will agree the amount of work put in by these gentlemen gave the athletes at Maroochydore the support and guidance to perform at their best.

At Nationals the support of Kylie McGrath cannot go unmentioned. After 3 days of extreme cheering it culminated in willing the U13 women’s Medley Re-lay B team into 6th place and securing us another point. This is what being in a club is about – true team spirit.

Go the Black Swan!!!

A surf board rack has been erected on the wall behind the racing Malibu Board racks.

The surfboard racks provide somewhere for the clubs youth to leave their boards on a daily ba-sis.

Members are requested to use the racks in lieu of leaving boards lying around in the Nipper room and or breezeway.

2013/14 Subsidy Applications are now available on the Club Website :
