THE

SWARTLAND

REVOLUTION

is a weekend in November when winefundis from home and overseas (400 thisyear) gather in Riebeek Kasteel to celebratethe wines of the Swartland.

The aim of the revolutionary weekend is toraise general awareness of the area, andalthough there might be stylistic andphilosophical differences in the wines to beshowcased, they all share a common senseof place – as with all great wine regions ofthe world.

Every year some memorabilia and hard tocome by items donated by the wineriesinvolved are auctioned. Money raised inthis way gets ploughed back into localcommunities ‐ in particular to the childrenof the people who work on Swartlandfarms and vineyards.

This year some of the money was used tobuy school jerseys, scarves, hats andmittens for RVSS.  Paint for use on thehostel walls was also donated.

SKATEBOARDCLUB FORMED

Students who live in the hostels during the week are often bored in the afternoon.There is little to do after school has finished. A second year student came up with anidea which might help resolve the problem. He suggested forming a skateboard club.Principal, Jeff Petersen,  welcomed the idea but he pointed out that the childrenneeded skate boards.

The student mentioned the problem to his mother. She in turn mentioned the problemto her co‐workers at Distell Libertas in Stellenbosh where she works. They all gottogether and raised enough money for twenty skate boards plus knee and arm guards.

These were given to students who immediately started to practise their skills.  Onelearner even thought it would be a good idea to skate down the mountain withoutstopping at any stop streets.  He received a lesson in the dangers of this!

Presidentʹs Award

The President’s Award Programme continues toinspire learners to become good citizens and itgives them a sense of belonging. Louise vanWyk, the TPA coordinator, decided to makePedro Klaase, a Year 3 pupil, the secretary.  He isa very sensitive young man with some seriousproblems at home.  Pedro takes his job assecretary very seriously and he makes sure allthe boys in the hostel know on which days theyhave to come to a meeting.  He regularly remindsthe award leaders of important events and hewas extremely proud of the bronze award hereceived in May of this year.

Due to the recent rain, students were not able togo out into the community but ideas forcommunity service for community service arestill needed. Pedro gathered some boys andarranged for them to work in the school library.

Aikona. Hulle was“GREAT!!”

WE NEEDYOUR HELP

RVSS gets state funding but thisbarely covers the basics. Learners

are supposed to pay fees fortransport, accommodation and otherodds and ends. But many cannot pay

since they come from very poorfamilies. To improve the school, andenable it to achieve it's objectives,

expertise and money must beobtained from elsewhere. Individuals

who have available time and areprepared to share their knowledge

and experience are needed.

Although the Friends have only beenin existence for a short time there isalready a small group looking at the

school's IT requirements, aspecialised catering school has been

established and others have beenteaching art, craft and cooking skills.

Fund raising events have been run, publicity material has been produced

and a web site has been set up.

As Jeff Petersen, the headmastersaid, “To see the response to Friendsin such a short space of time is truly

amazing. We really value theircommitment and involvement.”
