SIM2 @ CEDIA 2011, INDIANAPOLISRAVE REVIEWS FROM THE PRESS
“The SIM2 demo room featured a DLP
projector that was running at 144 frames per
second, allowing for three times the regular
24 frames per second for each eye. This
gave me a wonderfully bright image that
popped out of the screen and from what I
could see, free of artifacts or other issues
you see on 3D projectors. SIM2 picked some
content that I hadn't seen before, including
images of the Paris Air Show and a
spacewalk, and many images would just pop
from the screen and there was a lot of
wonderful 3D depth to the image. Easily the
brightest and more enjoyable active 3D
demonstration I saw at the show, there was
none of the eye fatigue that 3D usually
causes in me and I could have kept
watching the content.”
Chris Heinonen,
Secrets of Home Theater & High Fidelity
"In the joint theater demo conducted by
SIM2 and Krell, I caught a rocking video of
Metallica playing at the Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame concert and a clip from a space travel
documentary in 3D... Krell and SIM2 get it.
Excitement and emotion sell.”
Bob Archer
CE Pro
“At CEDIA Expo 2011, I was happy to see an
interesting mix of 3D demo material…SIM2
used a couple of clips from IMAX, Legends
of Flight and Hubble 3D”-
Arlen Schweiger
CE Pro/Electronic House
Awesome quote at SIM2 press conference –
“Not interested in making cheapest projector
but the next BEST projector.” The luxury
market is alive and well.

Among all the trends emerging in the big screen
home theater projector market, the one that I’m
most enthusiastic about is the move toward easy
ultra-widescreen projectors
that display 2.35:1 aspect ratio (also called
CinemaScope) without requiring the addition of an
anamorphic lens contraption. In the video below,
SIM2‘s Alberto Fabiano calls that the “Erector Set”
junk that installers integrate into the projection
system. Not only do those lens sleds look really
terrible on your ceiling or against your wall,
they also require power and control interfaces
to make them work, which means more work
for the installer and more cost to the
consumer, not to mention another thing to go
wrong on movie night.

Projectors CEDIA 2011SIM2, it seems, has a lot more home theater projectors than I
remember. They've been very busy launching whole new series
of projectors. I expect I will be doing at least one SIM2 projector
review this fall. Meantime, Here's a look at the SIM2 projector
lineup from top down. More than a dozen new projectors bring
the full lineup to over 30 different projectors. SIM2 considers
itself to be a high quality, high end line of home projectors. Their
business model is committed to providing owners with the whole
high end experience, great projectors supported by trained
dealers and quality support programs, to their generally very
stylish designs. Even their product catalog is beautiful. For 2011,
SIM2 offers single and 3 chip DLP projectors, for a total of 15
different, new projectors in 2011! Several of each are 3D
capable, although consider these all, first and foremost, to be 2D
home projectors. SIM2 isn't big on specs. Or rather they focus
on the value, and experience.

SIM2’s New Nero 3D
Projector Line Starts
at $19K2011 is SIM2 Multimedia's 15th anniversary. To celebrate, the
company is introducing 15 new models in 2011. In honor of the
event, members of SIM2's upper management, including President
Maurizio Cini, also attended the show. …The new models fall into
five different ranges: CRYSTAL, MICO, NERO, LUMIS, and
CINEMA. The CRYSTAL range (2D only) consists of two entries, the
$6500 Crystal 35 and the $8500 Crystal 45. To our recollection,
these are nearly blue light specials for a manufacturer which is not
normally known for relatively affordable projectors. The NERO
lineup's four 3D offerings start at $19,990. Among them is the
NERO 235, with a "scope" chip capable of high resolution, 2.35:1
projection without the need for an anamorphic lens. All the models
in this range give the buyer a choice of three different high quality
glass lenses. SIM2's LED-illuminated, 3D projectors are all in the
MICO range, with prices starting at $23,000. According to SIM2,
this is the world's first line of active 3D LED projectors. The Lumis
range, starting at $38,000, and the Cinema line, starting at $90,000,
are SIM2's 3-chip offerings, with prices to match their ambitions.

SIM2’s NERO Series is a four-model line
single-chip DLP-based projectors that have the
power and precision required to meet the
demanding criteria of today’s projection
applications: deep black level and accurate
colorimetry, large screen size, ambient light
conditions, artifact-free motion and the ability
to reproduce the extended depth of 3D. In the
NERO, SIM2’s renowned product development
team has created a projector line with the light
output, color accuracy and image clarity
normally only associated with larger and more
costly projector. With its compact chassis,
NERO has the perfect balance of power,
precision and innovation.
NERO 3D-1NERO 3D-1 is compatible with all of today’s
video sources, including 3D(*). A choice of
three lenses along with PureMovie, PureMotion
2D and PureMotion 3D user modes make
NERO 3D-1 a very versatile projector. The
NERO 3D-1 utilizes DarkChip 1080p (1920 x
1080 pixel resolution) and SIM2’s patented
ALPHAPATH™ optical light engine in its
design; this combination of digital micro-mirror
device and precision glass optics produces
images of excellent clarity and color accuracy.
A powerful lamp provides up to 2000 lumens
of light output and a native contrast ratio of
10,000:1.
NERO 3D-2The sleek black cabinet exudes quality, whilst
the technology within exceeds expectation. Its
compact size and curvaceous good looks
make NERO 3D-2 very room-friendly. Bright,
colorful images with a level of clarity to rival the
best movie theaters are all made
possible thanks to SIM2’s
patented optical light engine and
advanced processing electronics.
The NERO 3D-2 adds
DynamicBlack™ to an already
impressive list of features found
in the NERO 3D1.This additional
feature improves black level
performance and contrast ratio
(up to 30,000:1), making shadow
detail and picture dynamics look
even more realistic. The NERO 3D-2 sets new
standards for single-chip DLP® projection,
with PureMovie and PureMotion user modes
optimized for 2D and 3D(*) viewing.
NERO 3D HBThis high brightness version of the NERO
platform is designed to be used with large
screen sizes or in ambient light room
conditions, where high light output is a
necessity. Sharing the same ALPHAPATH™
light engine as the NERO 3D-2 and NERO
3D-1 models, the NERO 3D HB uses light-
tuned optical elements to maximize light
output (up to 3200 lumens) from its 280W
lamp. This is a star performer that has the
power and clarity to satisfy the most
demanding viewer, as well as the ability to
deliver bright, contrast-rich images when room
conditions are less than ideal for projection.
NERO 3D HB has a balanced delivery of both
high brightness and healthy contrast.
(*) A SIM2 3D emitter and glasses pack is
required to initiate this feature (sold
separately).
NERO 235NERO 235 is the ultimate expression of the
NERO design concept: a 2.35:1 format
projector with advanced electronics – the same
as those used in SIM2’s flagship Cinema series
- and precision optics. NERO 235 has a
2560x1600 native pixel resolution chipset that
makes it possible to display a 2.35:1 aspect
ratio image without the need to use an
additional anamorphic lens. No image
manipulation is required, thereby retaining the
purity of pixel shape and position. The chipset
format is switchable between 2.35:1 and
1.78:1 (16:9) to match the typical aspect ratios
of movies, sports and other video materials.
Pure digital connection to the projector is
available via the latest specification HDMI 1.4
ports and professional standard HD-SDI
inputs. Control options include: IR, RS232 and
IP addressable (via LAN connection, client-
server). A dedicated 10/100 Mbit Ethernet
connector is fitted as standard, allowing the
projector to be connected to a LAN network or
to the internet.

The MICO 100 series is a truly revolutionary
line: a potent mix of two of the latest
cutting-edge technologies – LED and 3D, in
a stunning new cabinet design, adding
depth to the existing line of MICO models.
This introduction is the world’s first active
3D LED projector line – and yet another
landmark product set for SIM2. SIM2 has
developed an enhanced version of its
PureLED technology for the MICO 150 and
160 models, a true all-digital system, with a
trio of LEDs (red, green and blue) acting as
both light and color source for the DLP® chipset. The purity of color and the ability of this
technology to deliver light as and when it is needed provide the MICO 160 and150 with
the ability to produce rich, dynamic and colorful images, offering a 25% increase in light
output over the existing MICO models. The MICO 160 uses SIM2’s ProPower electronics,
a true dual-channel signal processor that surpasses the home theater standard for 3D
projection, and offers the same optimized picture modes as those used in the LUMIS 3D
Series for 2D and 3D viewing.
SIM2 MICO 100 LINEECO Friendly Design
The new CINEMA line is the culmination of SIM2’s
rich history of designing and manufacturing high-
performance home cinema projectors. Comprising
of the CINEMA 90 and CINEMA 100 models, this
NEW line of 3-chip 3D DLP projectors is designed
for use in Reference Home Cinemas where very
large screens (typically over 15 feet wide) are used
and high light output is mandatory. This delicate
balance between sheer power and the ability to
accurately define the dynamics of an image is
crucial for true high-end image quality. The
CINEMA series, powered by a dual 400W lamp
system, is the new high-end reference standard,
against which all others will be judged. SIM2’s
CINEMA line delivers images with both very high
brightness (up to 10,000 lumens) and high contrast
(up to 10,000:1). SIM2 has created a new
electronics platform (SIM2 PRO POWER) for the
Cinema line, specifically designed with the future in
mind. The creation of a new electronics platform
that has the processing power required to optimally
reproduce video formats like Full HD 3D was a
strict requirement when the unit was designed. The
Cinema line’s advanced video processing
electronics, with enhanced keystone,
‘warping’ and spatial color correction
capabilities ensure that any required
image manipulation, from a vertical
stretch in 3D, to an edge-blended multi-
projector set-up, is easily achieved. An
array of dedicated inputs is available
including HDMI 1.4 and 3G HD-SDI.

The CRYSTAL line consists of
two models: CRYSTAL 35 and
CRYSTAL 45. Both share the
same design aesthetics, but
differ in terms of light output
and contrast ratio. CRYSTAL
45 utilizes a reference version
of the CRYSTAL light engine
with select optics plus
enhanced processing
electronics to achieve this
improved performance. DLP®
is the picture technology of
choice for the CRYSTAL 35/45;
a Full HD1080p (1920 x 1080
pixel resolution) chipset is
used in its design, combining
this with DynamicBlack™
contrast-enhancing
technology. The CRYSTAL
projectors are able to deliver
crisp, clear images without the
motion-blur associated with
other picture technologies.
SIM2 has utilized advanced
lamp technology in the design
of the CRYSTAL 35/45 to
further optimize the image
performance of these DLP®-
based projectors. The
electronics used in this system
control the UHP lamp by way
of a two-pulse system: one
bright pulse and one dark
pulse. The dark pulse
enhances contrast, while the
bright pulse improves
brightness. The resulting image
fills the screen with vibrant
colors, deep blacks and bright
whites. The CRYSTAL
projectors are unlike any other
projector on the market; their
compact size, distinctive
cabinet design and assured
image performance mean that
they will very soon become the
centerpiece of your home
entertainment system.
