Innovation Certification Program offered to West Central Illinois Businesses

galesburg.org visitgalesburg.com greda.org 5

The EBI Network is a newly establishedregional collaboration in West CentralIllinois for Entrepreneurs, Business, andIndustry. To help the region’s businessescreate an innovation environment in theirorganizations the EBI Network is hostingan Innovation Certification Program inconjunction with the University of Illinois ’Business Innovation Services. Thisintense, three day program can helpcompanies build a strategy and a culturethat will drive consistent growth and prof-itability.

Gary Camarano, the EBI Network’sGlobal Strategy Director observes that,“Innovation can be the key to success ina turbulent economy. Innovation createsopportunities for growth and expansion, and remains key to our region’s future.”Mr. Camarano went on to say that “thereis nothing quite like the returns that asuccessful new product or service canbring straight to the bottom line of anorganization. It is especially important intimes like these, when there may bemore pressure to hunker down than toreach out. The challenge is how to tapthe potential of innovation in ways thatyield reliable, predictable, and substantial

returns year in and year out.”

To help businesses meet this challengethe EBI Network is collaborating with theUniversity of Illinois, Carl SandburgCommunity College and the GalesburgChamber of Commerce to offer anInnovation Certification Program that willhelp companies create an innovation cul-ture in their organizations, harness thecreativity of their employees and developan innovation process that will makethem stronger, more flexible and compet-itive in today’s economy.

According to Mary Rose Hennessy of theU of I’s Business Innovation Services,“Organizations cannot expect to survivewithout constant innovation. Innovation iswoven into the fabric of the Americanspirit and has created the entrepreneurialdrive that has made the U.S. a nation oftremendous wealth and opportunity.Competing in the global marketplace hasbeen a catalyst for incredible change andimprovement over the past ten years.Organizations that recognized major eco-nomic shifts in the late 90’s jumped headfirst into innovation in one form or anoth-er in order to survive. Innovations such

as increased speed, finding niche mar-

kets, improving quality, outsourcing and

process improvements have served to

keep U.S. manufacturers globally com-

petitive.”

Mr. Camarano added that, “Successful

new products or services are seldom the

result of a ‘eureka’ moment; but rather

the result of a systematic process that is

rooted in identifying customer needs and

meeting them in creative ways. It flows

from an innovation mindset that can be

found throughout a successful organiza-

tion, and this can be taught. Our

Innovation Certification will provide par-

ticipants with the knowledge and tools to

bring an innovation process to their com-

panies.”

The Innovation Certification Program is

scheduled for November 4th, 11th and

18th at Carl Sandburg Community

College. For more information about the

program call Gary Camarano at

309.371.0474.

President Obama Promotes Tourism at Alpha Town Hall Meeting

Tourism Director, Judy

Guenseth, was able to represent the

Chamber of Commerce and the

Galesburg Area CVB at the recent presi-

dential visit in Alpha, August 17. Three

hundred people from all ages endured 6

hours of hot sun and a two phase securi-

ty check process at the Country Corner

Farm Market to participate in President

Obama’s tour of the Midwest. Governor

Quinn, Secretary of Transportation

LaHood, State Representative Moffitt and

State Senator Sullivan and several other

area dignitaries were also present for the

meeting. A large crowd of regional and

national media documented the event.

After his speech, the President opened

the floor for questions and Guenseth was

selected to participate. Before she

asked her question, she related her role

in tourism and thanked the President forvisiting Galesburg moments earlier. AsObama responded to her question, hediscussed the importance of tourism toour economy.

After the meeting, atten-dees were not allowed to leavethe market until the Presidentand his entourage left the site. However, Henry County PorkProducers and Curry Farmstreated all to pork chop sand-wiches, corn on the cob andfresh fruit free of charge.

Once again theGalesburg Area has been influ-enced by a President of theUnited States. The history of this

community is rich from past presence of

McKinley, Reagan, Lincoln and Clinton in

our town. Thanks to President Obama

for bringing presidential attention to the

Galesburg Area once again.
