We Are Life-Long Seed Sowers

Consciously or unconsciously we are all seeds sowers. Jesus’ first set of images as he started catechizing his followers about the Kingdom of God, were seeds; the process of sowing seeds, different types of soils and their abilities to produce according to their qualities and/or dispositions to the seeds. According to him the Kingdom of God may be likened to “A sower [who] went out to sow”, “a man who sowed good seed in his field”, and “a mustard seed that a person took and sowed in a field” (Matthew 13). In other words, Jesus is metaphorically saying that we are both recipients of seeds and sowers of seeds. For now, let us focus on the latter.

When we think about sowing seeds or being sowers we think about conscious acts of preaching, teaching, giving advice or counseling, mentoring children and so on. Very seldom do we think of our unconscious actions and inactions as sowing of seeds. Yet, that is precisely what we spend most of our lives doing – we continually sow seeds through our social interactions and mutual influences. In fact, it is perfectly possible that over 60% of our actions and inactions are unconscious sowing of seeds. For example, parents are often unaware that all their actions and words including outbursts while driving, spousal arguments and relationships at home, casual comments, the way they relate to neighbors, their attitudes to spiritual matters such as prayers, church, the Bible, spiritual and corporal works of mercy, their attitudes towards other races, political beliefs and tendencies – the list goes on – are seeds sown in their children and those around them. Someone rightly said to parents, “Don’t worry that your children are not listening to you. Rather, you should worry that they are watching what you do.”

But the same is true of all of us. Many of us are unaware that our body languages, facial expressions, attitudes, actions, reactions, the things we say and the way we say them and even our omissions are all seeds sown in others. So there’s no escaping being sowers! But hey, don’t be afraid. Remember that increase of knowledge brings increase of efficiency. Knowing that our lives are seeds is such a powerful thing. It makes you want to smile more, reach out more, pray more, exercise more restraint and self control, be more giving, more patient, more loving, more understanding and merciful. Imagine making a daily commitment to be a reflection of God’s glory and goodness. As Jesus says, “let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Mt 5:16). If we sow good seeds with our lives, what a bounteous harvest we shall rip in our families and communities.

So this past weekend I did something I haven’t done in a long time, I entered into leading a retreat in a bad mood. Why was I in a bad mood you ask? Well as I was preparing for the retreat and running around getting last minute things I ended up smashing my phone in the van door! I was very upset because my phone isn’t that old and I don’t have insurance on it. To top it off, on the way up to Big Bear my phone started freaking out and I became unable to use my phone for the whole weekend. This concerned me greatly but I had to take a moment and step back and remember what the point of the weekend was, to bond and grow closer to God. Not having my phone as a distraction let me enter into the weekend more fully with my leaders and I wasn’t distracted by the outside world. We had an amazing weekend not only bonding but working on qualities of being a leader that the team themselves said they wanted to work on. I am constantly blown away by our amazing leaders and their maturity to grow and see their own flaws, it really makes for an awesome team that is constantly growing. After this weekend I can’t wait for confirmation to start in a few weeks so that our leaders can soar and be the amazing leaders I know that they are. Please pray for us as we finishing preparing for the start of year and begin a new chapter in our Youth Ministry. Upcoming Events: September 23 at 3:30pm-Year 2 Orientation September 30 at 3:30pm-Year 1 Orientation

Safeguard the Children The Archdiocese of Los Angeles works diligently to create safe environments in all parishes and schools. Our school staff is fingerprinted by The Archdiocese, attends the Virtus Certification three- hour class, and remains current by completing monthly updates or completing the Recertification class at the end of a four-year term. Additionally, all family members and/or anyone who volunteers to spend time on our campus completes the Virtus Certification class, Protecting God’s Children. The principal joins other parish ministry leaders and parish members for The Safeguard the Children bi-annual meetings to review and renew the efforts to maintain safety. All of us at Sacred Heart School pledge to continue our vigilance in the care and protection of our students and parish members.
