In “God's Story, Our Story” members of the Second family offer personal stories on their faith and life. They always come with stories about our past, about what has shaped us and our understanding of God and faith, and about who we have been and who we are. SEPTEMBER 10 IS RALLY DAY!!!!

On “Rally Day,” summer ends and we rally back to the church from vacations and camps to dedicate our lives together. Please dress casually and come prepared for a fun and engaging time!

This year worship starts at 11:00 on Sunday morning, September 10. Be ready for fun and unusual music, lots of activity and involvement, and a focus on “finding your theme song.” (Note that the Nursery will be open at 10:30, and that Sunday School then will begin the following week, on September 17).

After worship, everyone is invited to join in a delicious potluck meal. The church will be providing beverages, chicken and BBQ (prepared by Ginny Morgan). PLEASE BRING A SIDE DISH, SALAD, OR DESSERT. After you’ve finished a great meal with good friends, you can enjoy volleyball, an inflatable moon bounce, or an obstacle course, AND taste a wonderfully new kind of flavored ice for dessert.

This is a very special celebration for our church family. If you have a friend or relative that might be interested in joining us, INVITE THEM TO COME ALONG! We look forward to seeing you on Rally Day!

GOD’S STORY, OUR STORY (a new program—with dinner and stories—for this fall at Second Presbyterian)

WEDNESDAY, September 20, with Peggy Troyer and Joe Morgan

From 5:45 to 6:30, join us for an excellent dinner ($5 per person, kids 6 & under FREE), and then for presentations from two of our members. In “God's Story, Our Story” members of the Second family offer personal stories on their faith and life. Sometimes these reflections come with photos from the past, or with music, or with video

clips. They always come with stories about our past, about what has shaped us and our understanding of God and faith, and about who we have been and who we are. These talks create meaningful opportunities for greater understanding and connection, and they encourage each of us to think about what has shaped us and given our own life meaning.

FROM THE PASTOR: LIVING AS CHRISTIANS FROM STEWARDSHIP THROUGH DISCIPLESHIP

Chuck Colson tells the story of visiting Mississippi’s Parchman Prison, where he found most of the death-row inmates killing time by watching TV. He writes,

“But in one cell a man was sitting on his bunk, reading. As I approached, he looked up and showed me his book—an instruction manual on Episcopal liturgy.

His name was John Irving. On death row for more than 15 years, he was studying for the priesthood. John told me he was allowed out of his cell one hour each day. The rest of the time, he studied—preparing to meet Christ or serve him here.

Seeing that John had nothing in his cell but a few books, I thought, God’s blessed me so much, the least I can do is provide something for this brother. ‘Would you like a TV if I could arrange it?’ I asked.

John smiled gratefully. ‘Thanks,’ he said, ‘but no thanks. You can waste an awful lot of time with those things.’

For the 15 years since a judge placed a number on his days, John has been determined not to waste the one commodity he had to give to the Lord—his time.”

Frequently we “pass time,” “kill time,” “waste time,” or “while away the time.” But the Bible reminds us that time is a gift to each of us. Ephesians 5:16 tells us to “redeem the time,” to make the most of our days.

How do we redeem what God has given us? Time, talent, treasures? How do we redeem the troubles, the sins, and the frustrations of our lives? How do we experience life through a God-blessed perspective?

During the 2017-2018 year, we will focus on what it means to live each day as a Christian. In the fall we start by thinking about how you can more closely align your faith with every aspect of your daily life. Please join us as we worship, study, and serve together—as a Second family—in seeking to redeem our lives and glorify God.

With blessings, Pastor Craig

MONDAY EVENING BIBLE STUDY ON THE BOOK OF JAMES

On Monday, September 11, an eight week study on the Book of James entitled “Growing up in Christ” by Warren Wiersbe will start at 7:00PM at Katie White’s house.

Have you ever wondered how as Christians we should address things such as trials, temptations, speech, or your faith? The book of James is a commanding, straightforward book that focuses on how we as Christians should view and address common problems

in life, yet also still acknowledges that “mercy triumphs”! Wiersbe asserts that God “wants us to grow up, not just grow old” and his study helps us to focus on spiritual

maturity. If you are interested in participating in this study, please let Katie know ([email protected], or 615-8728) so she can order you a book. Parents with

children are welcome; please contact Katie to discuss childcare.

LIFE DURING THE OTHER 167 HOURS An hour of worship should be meaningful, energizing, and orienting. But what happens during the other 167 hours of the week, when we work, eat, sleep, play, go to school, shop, visit with others, and clean? Faith matters more than ever during those hours. Come see why.

Sept. 10 “When Music and the Mysterious Meet: Finding Your Theme Song” (Colossians 3:16; Psalm 98) Sept. 17 “When Work and Worship Meet: Living Your Vocation” (Matthew 9:9-13; Matthew 22:15-22, 37-40) Sept. 24 “When Sleep Meets the Sacred: Experiencing God’s Dream” (Proverbs 6:6-11; Psalm 127:1-2; Matthew 11:28-30) Oct. 1 “When Food Meets Faith: Being Nourished by What Matters” (Genesis 1:29-30; 1 Corinthians 10:23-33) Oct. 8 “When Recreation and Redemption Meet: Reclaiming Wholeness” (Exodus 20:8-11, Matthew 6:31-32, and 1 Corinthians 9:24-25) Oct. 15 “When Consumerism and Christ Meet: Shopping with a Different Purpose” (Psalm 49, Luke 12:13-21) Oct. 22 “Housework (Gardening, Cleaning, Caring) Meets Holiness: Reframing Daily Tasks” (John 13:1-17; Colossians 3:17-24)

WE HAVE A PLACE FOR YOU!

There is excitement in the air as we head into the Fall season here at Second Presbyterian. If you are looking for a way to serve and get involved, we have some wonderful opportunities for you to participate in our music ministry. On Wednesday, September 6 at 7:30 p.m., please join us as our Chancel Choir begins rehearsal in the sanctuary. We would love for you to come out and sit in with us and see if you would enjoy singing with our choir. Also, on Thursday, September 7 at 6:30 p.m. our handbell choir begins rehearsing for the fall season. We meet upstairs in the

education classroom at the end of the hallway. You do not need to be able to read music to ring handbells. As long as you’re able to count we can help you ring bells. We have individuals of all experience levels who ring bells with us. Please consider plugging in to our music ministry this Fall. You are needed and there is a place for you.

Blessings, Isaac Thomas
