Something different each Saturday. 8:30 a.m. – Noon Your spacecraft has been hit by a meteor shower and crash-landed in the west Valles Marineris of the planet Mars! The Mariner Valleys are 4.3 miles deep and 2,500 miles long, over three and a half times deep and nine times as long as Earth’s Grand Canyon. From your scattered spacecraft you must build your own Mars Rover and with it guide your surviving crew members to Arsia Mons, a dormant caldera over twice as high as Earth’s Mount Everest and thirty times as large as the volcano Mauna Loa on Hawaii. With your salvaged Mars Rover you must traverse glacial rifts and secure the safety of the Seven Sisters, gargantuan caves formed from extinct lava tubes. But your time is limited because your sensors have detected a massive meteor storm heading your way! Limited Time creates a sense of suspense, imminent failure, and excitement. Class emphasis is on the practical use of the Scientific Method, using Observation, Query, Hypothesis, Prediction, Testing, Refinement or Rejection, and Theory to build, program, and refine a Lego NXT Robot to overcome challenges, resulting in a sense of accomplishment. Prerequisite is prior completion of a Lego NXT Robotics Programming class or instructor’s approval. $55 per class or $100 for both sessions. About the InstructorAlex Beene is an author and educator. He currently serves as a lead instructor for Tennessee Adult Education in three counties. He primarily works with rising high school juniors and seniors needing academic help with major national exams like ACT and SAT, as well as college preparation. His records have been stellar; since 2013, he’s mentored over 1,000 students who have been awarded a combined total of $4.2 million in scholarships and other financial aid. The average increase in ACT scores under his tutoring have been 3.4 points. In addition to tutoring and college prep, he’s a best-selling author of two children’s books, “Lessons from a Southern Mother” and “The Journey of the Paper Heart.”

Advanced Digital Photography – Creative Photography SkillsThursdays, Oct. 20, 27, Nov. 3 & 106 – 9 p.m.This course is designed to follow-up the Basic Digital Photography course but is open to anyone familiar with digital camera operations and basic photography skills. The advanced camera skills of DSLR and other digital cameras will be discussed. Creative imaging techniques in landscape, wildlife, portrait and close-up photography will be practiced and critiqued. Exercises in low-light and night-time photography will be held. Personal digital cameras, operations manual and a tripod are required. This course will include classroom and field experiences (depending on the weather). An extra optional day field trip on a weekend will be offered. About the InstructorRoger Hughes is a retired special agent in charge of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. Mr. Hughes is a 30-year veteran criminal investigator of the TBI’s Criminal and Drug Investigation Divisions. After years of photographing major crime scenes, evidence and surveillance targets, Mr. Hughes began studying fine art imaging at the University of Tennessee, Rocky Mountain School of Photography and under the mentorship of three acclaimed wildlife and nature photographers. He is also a past president of the Northwest Tennessee Photography Club. He has taught Photography classes for UT Martin for 5 years. He has limited examples of his work that can be seen at www.nwtpc.org.
