NPMS News Welcome back to North- land Pines Middle School! Thank you for reading this newslet- ter. We will be sending a newsletter every other month to keep you up- dated on the happenings here at NPMS. This is my second year as the principal of the middle school and I truly enjoy my position here. I have been fortunate to meet many of you but if we haven't met at this point I look forward to meeting with you and working together as we educate your child. Just like last year I am always amazed by our extremely professional and caring staff. They truly make our school great! Please don’t hesi- tate to contact any of your child’s teachers if you have a question or are in need of some- thing. The entire staff is constantly working hard to ensure that our school affords our students eve- ry opportunity to learn and grow academically, intellectually and social- ly. In the end we are all here to see our students succeed in all facets of growth and life. We want our students to be upbeat and involved in their education. We would like all of our stu- dents to partake in extra- curricular activities that we offer here. There are many activities, clubs and athletic ventures our students can get in- volved with. Encourage your students to soak up the middle school expe- rience by not only keep- ing their grades up but also by getting involved in these offerings. The priority of the staff here is to create a safe, positive and nurturing environment where our students flourish. We currently have this at NPMS!! The other key piece to educating our students is parent/ guardian involvement, that's where you come in!! Our PTSO is a great way to get involved. We are always looking for people to help us out . We realize the need for an open line of commu- nication between our- selves and you as the parent/guardian of your student. Please do not hesitate to contact my- self if you need some- thing or have a ques- tion. We will continue to send things home to communicate with you. Please get on the portal and check your student's grades and talk to your student about their grades. The more we are on the same page the better chance your student has of reaching their full poten- tial. In the end that is what we all want. Thank you for all that you do for our students! You can check your child’s grades at any time using the Campus Portal, and see what is happening in various classes by logging into your child’s Schoology account. Yet, in addition to this, we love to have parents come in for confer-ences to learn more about how your child is doing. The first conference day will be on Monday, November 7th, 2016 from 11:00 - 7:00. The 2nd confer-ence date is Thursday, February 16th, 2017 from 4:00—7:00 pm. You will need to call the middle school office at 479-6479 to schedule appointments to meet your child’s teachers.

We encourage parents/guardians to set up times to meet with teachers outside of conferences if their conversations may take longer than 10 minutes to complete. We understand that making appointments are sometimes difficult, although the schedule fills up fast, if you find an opening in your calendar and would like to still see some teachers, please feel free to call us the day of conferences and we will do our best to fit you in!!!in!!!

All students in the district have the opportunity to participate in breakfast.

For NPMS students, breakfast is available anytime between 7:50 and 8:15 in the cafeteria. Breakfast costs $1.60 or $0.30 for reduced. Having a healthy break-fast and starting the day with the nutrients needed is very important in your child’s success throughout the day. All students are invited to take advantage of the breakfast program. Several offerings are prepackaged and can be saved for later in the day when the students need to fuel up! All offerings are whole grain en-riched and meet the requirements for the school breakfast program.

Meal Benefit Application The Free/Reduced Meal Application is available online through the Campus Portal. If you need a 2016-17 appli-cation mailed to you, please contact the Food Service office at 715-479-5800 or pick up an application at any school office. Applications should be returned as soon as possible. If you have not refiled your application for 2016-17, your meal benefits will expire on October 17, 2016 and revert to full pay. To setup a Campus Portal user, please email [email protected]. Checking Family Lunch Accounts Parents may check student lunch accounts online by going to the School District’s website and selecting the Campus Portal link. MS Band Performance Students are hard at work creating music in band class. Some of the upcoming perfor-mance opportunities are Veteran’s Day Nov. 11th (during School), Jazz concert Nov. 14th 7PM (Jazz Groups only), and our Winter Con-cert on Dec. 15th at 7PM. Intermediate Band (7th and 8th grade) will be touring the commu-nity on Dec. 22nd during the school’s after-noon schedule.

Several students in the 7th/8th Grade Choir will be participating in Singing in Wisconsin, a choral festival, on Saturday, November 14th. This event will be held at Wausau West High School. NPMS students will be rehearsing with stu-dents from many schools, under the direction of high-level high school and col-legiate conductors. Students will put on a concert at 4:00 pm after just a few short hours of rehearsal. This is a great way for students to improve their singing, meet new people, and learn great music. Good luck to these students!

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords parents and students over 18 years of age (“eligible students”) certain rights with respect to the student’s educa-tion records. The district discloses “directory data” without con-sent. Directory data means those educational records which include the student’s name, address, tele-phone listing, date and place of birth, major field of study, participation in officially recognized activities and

sports, weight and height of members of athletic teams, dates of attendance, photographs, videotaping, degrees and awards received, and the name of the school most recently attended by the student. Parents and guardi-ans have 14 days from the date of this notice being published to inform their school district of which infor-mation may not be released without their consent.

Thank you very much to all students and parents that sold for our school-wide fundraiser. Products will be delivered to school on Wednesday, November 2. The plan will be to distribute all items to the students before the end of the day. Students who only sold a few items will be able to take them home with them on the bus. Students who sold many items need to make arrangements to have their products picked up after school. Some of the items need to be refrigerated or kept frozen. We cannot keep anything overnight. All items must be picked up. Contact Jim Beyer at 479-6479 ext 4231 if you have any questions or concerns.

It was great to see students eager to find their locker and meet their teachers after a quiet sum-mer. We really encourage students, parents and guardi-ans to stay involved throughout the year not only with our students' education but also with all of the other activities going on here at NPMS.

Box Top Reminder Our next collection will be October 12th

Please remember to watch and collect any Box Tops for Education you come across. The money we receive from the Box Tops for Education provides many

opportunities and special items for our students. All box tops need to be trimmed and counted before we can submit them. Any trimming that can be

done prior to turning them in is greatly appreciated, as we are once again lim-ited on our homeroom times this year in middle school. If you do not have time

to trim them, please submit them and we will get them ready to submit to the company. All Box Tops are appreciated and very helpful!!! THANK YOU!!

We are continuing to promote success for our students by offering an after school homework center. The ASHC is open from 3:30-5:30 pm every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday after school. There are permission slips in the MS office that need to be signed by a parent/guardian in order for a child to attend. We have a staff member supervis-ing this center on these days who will help students when they need it. If your child would like or needs extra time to work on his/her homework after school, the ASHC is the place for them. Mrs. Weber will be in charge of the homework center on Mondays, Mrs. Discipio on Tuesdays and Mrs. Schneider on Thursdays. We encourage parents to pick their students up at 5:30 pm in front of the middle school. This year, your child also has the option to walk to the high school at 5:30 and catch the late bus there at 6:10.

The first meeting of the new school year was held on Thursday, September 29th. We reviewed the end of the year activities and began to plan and organize for this school year. We need your support to help provide opportunities for students at NPMS. We are looking for individuals to serve as committee members, organizational volunteers, bakers, chaperones and supporters. It is a fun way to get to know teachers, students, and other parents. The PTSO will be sponsoring fundraisers throughout the year to raise funds for student activities, classroom enhancements, field trips, high school scholarships for students who were PTSO members at the middle school. Previous fundraisers have raised funds to help purchase equipment for the NPMS bee project, provide extra classroom supplies, assistance with the 8th grade awards, purchase new track uniforms, purchase supplies for Girl Power Night, purchased band shirts for the MS march-ing band and donated to the Northland Pines Alumni Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Your help will be needed to support our initiatives. You can help by baking, selling items, chaperoning, making signs or joining in on the fun. If you have a great fundraising idea or special skills, please let us know. In addition, all parents and friends can help out the PTSO in some very simple ways. Encourage family, friends, neighbors and grandparents to save the Box Tops for Education found on many items on your grocery list, so your child can bring them to school. Homerooms are competing to see who can bring in the most Box Tops. Here are some other ways to help out. If you shop at Sentry Foods in St. Germain, our code# is CD24. We also collect used printer cartridges that can be dropped off at the middle school office. Your recycling can help us raise money for our students. You can also help by designating NPMS at Target stores if you use a Target credit card; encourage friends and relatives to do the same. Our newest venture is to collect Moola milk caps from Kwik Trip milk containers. Every little bit helps to benefit our students. Our membership drive is continuing with a goal to have more members than last year. Your membership is needed and ap-preciated. A great perk for students is that once a member, he/she will get in free to PTSO sponsored activities which include two dances($3.00 each dance) and an end of the year outing to Kartway. It is well worth the money! Please consider joining as a family, attending a meeting, or helping out in some way.

From NPMS “Chromebook Central” Greetings!

As you know, your student’s Chromebooks are intended to be instruc onal devices for providing them access to their required educa onal materials needed for classes. This includes Google Drive and Apps, Schoology, educa onal web‐based tools, as well as Infinite Campus and other useful sites! The Chromebook is an educa onal tool not intended for gaming or social networking. Students are responsible for the general care of the Chromebook that has been issued by the school. We are asking for your help in reminding your students to:

Plug in their Chromebooks at night. Help them to check that both ends of the charger are plugged in securely. Make this a part of your student’s bed me rou ne!

Make sure they take their Chromebooks with them when they leave for school in the morning. Yes, mornings are o en a hec c me, but, again, try make it part of your stu dent’s rou ne, like pu ng on shoes! :)

Life happens” ‐ if your student forgets to charge their chromebook, or leaves it at home, etc., or has repair needs, a limited number of “loaners” are available for daily check‐out. However, students MUST come to “Chromebook Central” in Room 448 BEFORE SCHOOL to take care of these needs.

Also, a few reminders to prevent damage that you can review with your students:

Keep food and drink away from their Chromebooks. Typically, beverages spilled on Chromebooks is not covered by insurance, and students will be responsible for the replacement costs.

Only use a Chromebook with clean hands. We some mes see dirty, oily devices.

A Chromebook should always be closed when you carry it.

Do not carry or hold the Chromebook by the screen.

Student name shall remain on the device at all mes.

Students should always use the Chromebook with their own account.

Chromebooks should never be le in a car or any unsupervised area.

Please report a lost or damaged Chromebook immediately to Chromebook Central!

Finally, if we all work together to monitor Chromebook usage, both at school and at home to pre‐vent inappropriate use, our students will be safer and more successful. Thank you for your support!

The Vilas County News-Review/The Three Lakes News is set to sponsor its 20th annual, nationally recognized Warm The Children program, which locates impoverished families in the North Woods and provides new winter clothing to their children

Parents and caregivers of children ages newborn through 17 who are residents of Vilas County or the Three Lakes and Sugar Camp areas of Oneida County are welcome to apply for winter clothes. This year, the total dollar limit for each child age 2 to 17 is $130, and a limit for those under 2 years of age is $65.

Purchases are limited to clothing items such as coats, footwear, mittens, scarves, sweaters and other basics. Extravagant purchases are not permitted. Shopping will begin Wednesday, October 26 and will take place at Shopko Hometown and Glik’s in Eagle River. These stores will offer Warm The Children shoppers a discount on all regularly priced items.

Our goal this year is to raise more than $70,000 and we anticipate shopping for approximately 600 children. Each monetary donation, regardless of size, will make a difference. It can be $5, $10, $20, $100 or more.

The Warm The Children program was started in 1993 by Mack Stewart of Higganum, Conn., a re-tired newspaper publisher. Recognizing the need for warm winter clothing among underprivileged children, Stewart intended for each community to be self-sustaining in operating its own program. Jacki Roisjord serves as program coordinator. For more information, you can reach her at (715) 479-4421.

PBIS PBIS is something households in the Northland Pines School District have probably become very familiar with. You may have heard, "Pines Pride: Be Safe, Be Responsible and Be Respectful." Once again this year, the Northland Pines Middle School staff is working hard to make this program even more apparent in our building and in our communities. We feel that learning and practicing appropriate social behaviors are important steps in a student's educational experience. These expectations were introduced the first day of school and are the expected daily behaviors. A PBIS program allows us the tools to promote a positive school culture, and this year it is our focus to extend beyond the school building. This year the PBIS Leadership Team is focused on extending PBIS into our community. Plans are being made to show our community the benefits of PBIS. You may see our middle school students showing appreciation to our community, volunteering at Cranberry Fest, honoring our local veterans, ringing bells for Salvation Army, and participating in many other ways. This PBIS focus will make our students more aware of the wonderful communities we live in. All of us at Northland Pines Middle School are looking forward to a safe, responsible and respectful year. Go Eagles!
