Before the Belgian Volunteers went back to their country, Fr. Panneer took them to Kolkata the 'City of Joy'. Our physiotherapist, Mr. Murari Pramanik, also joined them as he is well versed with Bengali and is well acquainted with every nook and corner of Kolkata. They enjoyed themselves thoroughly sightseeing and gobbling down pizzas to their hearts' content. I feel another chapter has been added to their memory files and one more feather in the cap of Fr. Panneer. He left no stone unturned to provide loads of TLC and perhaps one could conclude that is the reason of Panneer becoming so emotional when the time came to say good bye to them.

These days Fr. Panneer is burning the mid night oil in preparing for the next financial year's Budget. 'No time to stand and s ta re…' Panneer, a long wi th h is Accountant, Mr. Murari, was seen buzzing hither and thither almost every day from Claver Bhavan, Amda, either to the bank or to the medicos or to the tyre-shops or to the head quarter or to the…he was busy as a

bee!

On 2 August our Dr. P.S. Balmuchu went to The Leprosy Mission Community Hospital (Diana Princess of Wales Health Education & Media Center) Naini, Allahabad - UP for the upgrading programme for doctors. He was the only one from Jharkhand State. There were 10 participants

who went through the training programme: how to identify leprosy, how to diagnose it correctly if identified and how to eradicate leprosy in whichever form it might appear in the patients.

Today, 22 August, the fifth batch of RCS patients was discharged after three weeks of physiotherapy. After a couple of weeks these people are expected to come back for their first follow up program. Mr. Murari conducted their follow up checkups and he is extremely satisfied with the results!

On 23 August Fr. Panneer and Mr. Ramesh, assistant accountant, DFIT, left for Chennai for the Budget Business Meeting.

The feast of Ignatius Loyola brought in us the spirit of the Society of Jesus. The theme for the feast was, “Ignatius: the Eucharistic Man “. Fr. George Pattery, POSA-Designate, was the Main Celebrant. DNC Times, an e-magazine was inaugurated, providing a plat form for the scholastics to write, sing, and compose etc. All the scholastics were inspired to contribute to the E-magazine. You can see the web site www.dnctimes.com for our articles. On 7 August we had a special prayer service in commemoration of 200 Years since the Restoration of the Society of Jesus. All the Jesuits of the JDV campus took part in the prayer service. On the 8 August Niral Deogam celebrated his birthday which was topped off for an Amul brand mango-

flavoured ice cream. Independence Day was celebrated with gusto. The Theologians had their first mid-semester exams from 18 – 23 August. On 23 we had a fellowship meal in the company of Frs. Abe, Swami and Joseph Xavier (on vacation from Rome).

A Rain Picnic by Living Groups to Lonavala towards the end of this

month gave some respite for doing something different for a change. The deacons are preparing themselves for their upcoming comprehensive exam. Apart from all these, our t ime table announces forthcoming events such as recollections, study group discussions, various ministries, etc.

Prabhakar Oddipalli

In This Issue our Principal, gave the message for the occasion.

We began our first semester exams on 13 and with that the entire campus turned into a silent zone. It will be over on 29. On 23 Frs. Victor and Bene went to Mugma for the monthly meeting of DNS Principals.

The students and staff of DNS Units showed a true sign of solidarity by contributing for the treatment of a student from DNS CTPS, who is suffering from cancer and is presently

undergoing treatment in Vellore. Victor, our Director, appreciated and thanked one and all for their generosity.

Amidst pulls and pressure, Victor managed to find time to give a three-day recollection to the MC Sisters on the occasion of their Foundation Day. 'I gave fiery talks,' said Victor with an ear-to-ear grin. Keep it up, Victor, and set the coalfields on fire!

We began the month of August on a perfect note with a visit from Fr. George Fernandes, our Provincial, who stayed with us on 4 August on his way to Tundi. On 3 August we went to St. Anthony's Parish, Dhanbad for the anticipated feast day celebration of St. John Vianney. On 7 we were in DNS, Digwadih for the farewell-cum-birthday celebration of Fr. Gerald D'Souza. The same night Fr. Sebastian P u t h e n p u r a f r o m L o y o l a S c h o o l , Jamshedpur, enroute to Bokaro for the Regional ISCE/ISC Principals' Meeting

came to our community and stayed with us for a couple of days. In spite of his busy schedule, Saby was kind enough to address our children. Thank you, Saby, for your generosity! On 8 and 9, Victor along with Saby went to Bokaro for the ISCE/ISC Principals' Meeting. Once again on 13 we went to the Jesuit Community, Digwadih, for the birthday celebration

of Fr.Amrit Kujur.

We ce leb ra ted Independence Day meaningfully. While Bene, our Coordinator and Treasurer, hoisted the Tricolor, Victor,

George Fernandes — the newly-appointed Provincial's visitation was a grace f i l led and energiz ing occasion for us. His encouraging words and sign of constant support were contagious. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to one and all for your prayerful support. Our regular guests—the students from our premier institute XLRI—8 boys and 7 girls with their Coordinator, Fr James Santhanam, halted here for their village exposure programme, The boys stayed at Divya Bharati and the girls at TRTC.

Divya Bharati organized a three-day Catechist Training programme from August 5 evening till 8 afternoon, to update the skills and methods of evangelisation. Eight catechists from different parishes in Chaibasa Deanery participated in the training program. The themes for different days of the training program revolved round the main them: “The Storm of Modernization and Wi-Fi on the Faithful”. Niranjan SJ briefly explained the mission and role of the family based on the letter of Pope John Paul II titled “The Christian Families in the Modern World”

22 November 1981. The concluding sessions were based on the mission of the Church and the participation of t h e f a i t h f u l . S t A n n e ' s C L C g r o u p — c o m p r i s i n g o f 7 1 students—had a day of recollection in Divya Bharati in preparation for the feast of the Assumption of Our Lady. Fr Niranjan gave the sessions and Fr Cyril celebrated the Holy Eucharist

for them.

Fr Cyril was down with viral fever at least for a week. He was also away in Jamshedpur for area visit and to Guwahati for a five-day training program on BCC Skills and Models. Fr Niranjan was away for the orientation program for the Krusvir Animators in Jamshedpur and Dhanbad and then to Ranchi to give a day of recollection for the mothers of Nawatad Parish in preparation for a meaningful celebration of the feast of St Monica. Niranjan also went to give a day of recollection to the Krusvir Children of Khuntpani and a half-day session on motivation to Plus Two students of St Xavier's Girls School, Chaibasa.

On 31 July, St. Ignatius was brought live to us by our Sisters, teachers and ch i ldren through a meaningfu l Eucharistic Celebration followed by cultural programs. On 2 August Fr. Alex went to Ranchi to the PF office to collect information as per the notice received pertaining to a PF problem created in the past. And again on 8 August Fr. Alex attended the hearing in the presence of the state PF Commissioner and clarified the issue that we are the new management with new employees who would like to deposit our PF money as per the rule. Once again on 9 September Alex will be visiting the PF Office for the final judgment on how to enrol our employees under the PF Act.

The First Terminal Exam began on 4 and ended on 12 August. On 6 Alex left for Calcutta to attend the funeral mass of Fr. Chinnappan of Baraipur Diocese who is also from his native village. On Independence Day, 15 August, our local Mukia Jaganath Mahto was the Chief-Guest for the flag hoisting ceremony and took the salute at the march-past.

From 9 to 13 August we had a special guest from America Mr. Daniel Pearson, the grand-nephew of John Guidera. In the evening Mr. Daniel, himself a basket-ball coach in a college, enjoyed playing basketball and soccer with the hostel children. Children were mesmerized by his skills in basketball and his simplicity. During the day Alex took Mr. Daniel and some

children who are from the leprosy colonies and visited their tiny huts and make-shift shelters. People were fascinated by Daniel who is 6 feet 7 inches tall making efforts to stoop down to enter the homes of lepers and meet them. We also thank Fr. Walter Kongari for visiting Gomoh on 13 of this month and for arranging Daniel's visit to Gomoh. His visits give us direction and guidance towards a better presence in this mission. On the same day we were also surprised by the sudden visit of Fr. Walter Crasta, the VG of the Diocese and Fr. Tobias.

They spent a few hours in our c a m p u s a n d d r e w t h e attention of our hostel children b y p e r f o r m i n g s o m e Japanese skills and cultural arts. Later in the evening they played a friendly foot-ball match in which our children won convincingly.

On 2 and 3 August Topchanchi Block level Subroto Roy Cup Football Tournament was conducted in our school p remises . S i x d i f f e ren t

schools participated in the boys' category. Both our teams from the Junior and Seniors sections emerged champions. At the district level our senior foot-ball team Under-17years category became champions but our junior boys Under-14 years gave a good fight in the final against St. Xaviers, Tundi and remained runners-up at the district level. It is the first time in the history of our school that we won two cups in the same tournament on the same day. Congratulations go out to Sch. Alok who has been inspiring and accompanying our

team closely. From 24to 27 August, he was in Hazaribag for the next level of the tournament. Good luck, Alok!

This year the Deanery Kurusvir Animators Meeting was held in DSWC, Govindpur where

Sr. Mukta and Ms. Satya represented our parish and school. They were impressed by Niranjan's charm, creativity, ideas and dynamism.

31 August will be a memorable day for our parishioners as we are getting ready to celebrate the feast of St. Monica and it will also be the official beginning of the fund raising for a Church building. On this day people from other Churches are also invited to participate in the cultural events and in the mini-mela that is organized by our parish women and youth.

On 22 August we were shocked by the sudden death of Sr. Cicily, SCN, a dynamic Sister who visited Gomoh on 2 and 3 August.

From 30 July to 7 August we had special Novena Prayer to commemorate the

th200 Anniversary of the Restoration of the Society of Jesus. We began the novena with a movie 'Passion and G lo ry ' . On 7 A u g u s t w e h a d a s o l e m n E u c h a r i s t i c Celebration. The Socius, Sylvester Ekka, was the Main

Celebrant. In his homily he highlighted the human and divine reasons behind the Restoration of the Society of Jesus. In the evening Fr. R. Anthony Raj conducted a special prayer service on the theme Restoration with video clips on Suppression and Restoration of the Society of Jesus. On 14 we had half-a-day Recollection starting with a short movie on St. Maximilian Kolbe. On

Independence Day Sylvester hoisted the flag in the novitiate and Albester Kujur, a Second Year Novice and Vijay Minj (MAP), a First Year Novice, delivered speeches in

English and Hindi respectively. Fr. Fabian Bhuiyan hoisted the flag at Ashirvad, Sankosai and Tony was invited to hoist the flag at the neighbouring Vivekananda School. A movie on St. Alberto Hurtado SJ put us in a spiritual mood to celebrate his feast on 18 August. So far we have had two community meetings on the SWOT Analysis of our apostolate of Jesu Bhavan Novitiate and Upasana Retreat House. On 22 August we celebrated the Queenship of Mary with the MC Sisters at Nirmal Hriday where the Novices took an active role in the singing.

Fr.Kurian Emphrail S . J . o f C a l c u t t a Province took over as the Rector of K r i s t u J y o t i P r o p a e d e u t i c a l Seminary on 4 of August. I took Fr. each and presented a sword to our B i s h o p . L o c a l n e w s p a p e r s published the event with our photos, as a meeting and prayer of the leaders of Sikhism and Christianity for world 'peace'.

With persevering efforts we crossed all barriers and obstacles to reach 'Kishtwar' from where the communal

riot broke out in August 2013. Slowly we are entering into the Muslim community as well, though it is still tough and we face resistance from certain corners.

thWe celebrated the 68 Independence Day in the two schools of Doda area. Now people

are beginning to recognize the work of our 'peace mission'. The whole community was very happy to welcome our Fr. Augustine Vattamattam who visited us. Bishop Ignatius was also very happy to meet Fr. Augustine.

The response to Pakistan-India Peace has been more than encouraging. I will go to Pakistan for 29 days from 3 September with 452 friendship letters. Kindly provide a prayerful shield for this very challenging mission.

31 July, the Feast of S t I g n a t i u s w a s celebrated with full en thus iasm. The f e s t a l M a s s w a s celebrated by the Provincial, George F e r n a n d e s . T h e I n i g o N i w a s Candidates along with the Hostel boys and girls led the choir. A Recollection talk by Benjamin Lakra and a three-day prayer service to St. I g n a t i u s p r e p a r e d t h e candidates spiritually for the feast. After the spiritual activities it was the time to

sweeten the mouths and satisfy their gastronomic desires. In keeping with the spirit of the feast a basketball match was arranged between the candidates and the Jesuits, where the candidates allowed the Jesuits to rejoice on this happy day by allowing themselves to be beaten. There was a short cultural program presented by

the candidates on the eve of the feast to which the Lupungutu Jesuit community was invited.

Once the feast was over, normalcy returned in the house. The First Years are slowly getting adapted to the life here, taking advantage of the learning opportunities given them like greater familiarity with English,

games, music, singing, and some physical work with total interest and zeal. The Second and Third Year candidates are busy with their +2 studies. Both Tony John and Basil are kept on their toes accompanying and moulding them into the ways of the Society of Jesus. Basil took time out for a day for the Monthly Recollection at Upasana for his own spiritual renewal. Tony went to Mosabani to give a talk to the Mahila Sangh on the occasion of the feast of St. Monica. Fr. Provincial is making a visitation on 27 August. He will be here till 29 August. A warm welcome to you, Fr. Provincial!

Fr. K.M. Joseph took time to direct a Triduum for the Missionaries of Charity (MC's) to help them prepare spiritually for their Titualar Feast – the Queenship of Mary. After presenting the Audit Report of JJS to the Finance Commission (high marks to him for the use of PPT and 'taking' questions from the members of the AGM) Province Treasurer, K. M. took off to do justice to his other role as PCF, interacting with the Scholastics in New Delhi, Ahmedabad and Mumbai.

The Community hosted the Annual Ignatius' Day lunch to the Twin City's clergy and religious. Minister Maxi's “Khana Khazana” along with “pre prandials” whetted the appetites of all our guests.

thThe community prepared itself for the 200 Anniversary of the Restoration of our Society with traditional pious devotions and novena.

Fr. Ajit Bahala left for Jaipur to get an expert opinion about his prosthetic foot. “The process has begun and I hope things will get better”, he says in his recent communication. St Xavier Community has been very generous in arranging all the logistic support. “Where there is a will there is a way” Ajit. You

will be able to run soon, Insha Allah! Parish Priest, Fr. Sylverius Lugun is efficiently handling the additional responsibility as acting Headmaster in Ajit's place.

“Loyola has taught me how to smile” admits our new Principal, Fr. Amaladoss, flashing a broad one, still keeping a stiff upper lip. Keep that smile on, Amal, which hides a multitude of tensions that goes along with the Damocles' sword suspended over your neck. Amal also visited recently the lowest point of India, for a meeting of Principals in the Andaman-Nicobar Islands.

Our collaborators, Srs. Winifred and M a r g a r e t , a r e managing the Junior School well. Our Lay c o l l a b o r a t i o n experiment, with Ms. Nandita Pattanayak, as Senior School Coordinator, is also

having a smooth sail. This definitely takes a huge load off the Principal's shoulders.

To celebrate the Feast of the St. Ignat ius Loyo la meaningfully, the c o m m u n i t y reflected on the various themes on St. Ignatius for our novena. The Feast Day began with the Mass celebrated by the P r o v i n c i a l , G e o r g e F e r n a n d e s . H e l a t e r garlanded the statue of St. Ignatius at the entrance to the chapel.. The school also invited Fr. Provincial to address the assembly. As the day's Chief Guest, he garlanded the statue of St. Ignatius in the assembly area. He went on to share with us the joy of his past memories of LPG and his hope for the future. Ranjit

Kerke t ta , i n a f ew words , contextualised the life of St. Ignatius in the modern world. W e a l s o c e l e b r a t e d t h e

t hc o m m e m o r a t i o n o f 2 0 0 Anniversary of the Restoration of the Society of Jesus on 7 August. The Kolhan Jesuits assembled in LPG for a Solemn Mass followed by dinner. We are also happy to

announce the victory of the Under-14 Football Team who became the District Champion by a 7-1 margin against CKP Carmel on 13 August. On the occasion of Independence Day and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mass was offered by Fr. Alex Mascarenhas. Fr. Tony John was the Chief Guest for the flag hoisting ceremony in the school. In his speech on Jashn-e-Azadi, he emphasized the need for commitment in safeguarding our freedom in our day-to-day life.

“Health is wealth”- To keep himself fit for the mission, Fr. Oscar Horo went to Tata for the

usual health check-up and met the cardiologist and the dentist. Bro. Pascal Kerketta was admitted into Mercy Hospital on 21 August with acute pain in his side, which was diagnosed by Dr. Mohanty as the formation of small stones in the kidney. As a result, he was under medication for a few days. “Khub jor se paani peejiye” was the prescribed remedy. Pascal has faithfully taken to water therapy, drinking about 8 litres of water a day. Meanwhile we are storming heaven with our prayers for his speedy and steady recovery.

Both the sections, High School and Plus-Two started their first term exams on 19 August.

We hope for an improved performance by the Under-14 Football Team which went to Tata on 23 August for the further elimination rounds to participate in the Final of the Subroto Roy Cup to be held in Delhi.

The ten First Year Theologians from five Provinces made their presence felt

o n 1 4 J u n e a t Tarunoday, Ranchi. On 15 June they were welcomed by t h e K a n k e parishioners. They had their 3 days Orientation to RTC way of life. Santosh Minj did his 8 days spiritual journey under the able guidance of Barry (HAZ). Rethesh Cutinho and his companion arrived on 26 J u n e t o p u r s u e t h e i r theological studies. The commencement of the new academic year began with the Inaugural Mass followed by a thought-provoking talk on the theme “Adivasi F a m i l y : I s s u e a n d Challenges.” We even had a sharing by two couples of Kanke parish, which gave us the present perspective of adivasi life - its glory and its challenges.

Rethesh is already on his toes prepar ing for h is classes and exams on the G o s p e l o f M a t t h e w . Santosh is getting used to the change – as a Regent he was a teacher and today he reverts to the role of a

student. He revisited his own tribal life during the course of Tribal Religion and Movement. He and his companion went to Suitambe (Munda tribe, the original settler of the place) on bicycle. We were busy preparing ourselves spiritually and physically for the feast of St Ignatius. Inigo Day was the time of celebration of our joys with the

people and with one another in the community. We had the Feast Day Mass with the faithful in the Kanke parish. In the afternoon our Sarna brethren also came to Tarunoday. At the moment Rethesh is handling the most sensitive job as Kitchen-in-Charge, while Santosh Minj is RTC's sacristian.

Tarunoday Scholastics had a friendly football match with the Kanke Youth on 15 August, which the Scholastics won 1-0. Our brothers along with Kanke Youth played a football match with Bittah Parish Youth and Kanke Youth won a thrilling match. This year there was a special event organized by Tarunoday Scholastics for the Kanke Youth (Girls). A Bucket Basketball game was organized for them against the St. Anne's candidates. The candidates won the game by 6-1. The Scholastics also took part in the match, making it interactive for our mission with the youth of the parish.

Central Zone Provincials' visit graced and inspired the Tarunoday (RTC) family with their presence and words of wisdom. On this occasion, Rethesh shared his experience about the Community and Spiritual Life. The discussion with the

Provincials helped us to know what the Society and the Church is expecting from us.

Rethesh's parents came to Ranchi and spent a day with Rethesh and the community. Their presence brought joy to RTC and even in Kanke parish. They were welcomed by the Parish Priest, James Dungdung.

John Mundu is one Jesuit who is ever on the move, who disappears and appears at Tarunoday. In a way he is in great demand. He is responding to the call to teach and to share his insights with others. He attended the Province Consult to Jamshedpur and, together with Fr. Jerry Cutinha, worked on the Gospels in the HO language after spending weeks in the seminary of Morning Star, Barrackpore, Kolkata. Presently he is teaching a course in Pathalgoan. Come September and he will be flying to Rome at the invitation of Father General. Here is a quote from Fr. General to our Provincial to explain John's visit to Rome: “I have decided to invite Fr John Mundu of your Province to join this Secretariat whose members normally meet once a year here with me at the Curia in Rome. I am confident that Fr Mundu, who is a tribal, is proficient in . theology and has done some research in the field of tribal religions, will be a valuable addition to this team of experts whose guidance I find very helpful for my own thinking and governance. I am writing to Fr Mundu separately to invite him to serve as a member of the Secretariat.”

The month of August was packed to the brim with various activities that induced more learning in us. This month Fr. Mike, our Dean, in t roduced a new programme cal led “Weekend Insight' – a series of lectures on interesting topics. The first Weekend Insight was given on 3 August by Fr. Mike himself on “Developing Memory Skill”. The second lecture was on 9 August by Fr. Geoff Meagher (HAZ) on the theme; “The Smell of the Sheep, the Smell of the Library and the Smell of the Future.” He also shared his past experiences of being the Dean of this Juniorate in the 1980s. The third “Weekend Insight” was on 16 August given by Fr. John Kennedy, (MDU) on “Motivation – The Key to Success”. He shared with us the importance of the English Language.

On Independence Day, 15 August, the SSC campus gathered to hoist the national flag. Fr. Mike was the Chief Guest for the occasion. The Novices drew the attention of all by presenting a beautiful parade and a patriotic dance. We also had a football match against the Teacher Trainees' Team. We routed them two nil. On the same evening our Tertians began their Long Retreat with great vigour and zeal. The way they carry themselves during this spiritual journey – so recollected and prayerful – makes a lasting impact on us.

On 18 August we began a five-day workshop on “Psycho Spirituality and Sensitivity”. The resource person of this workshop was Fr. Fermin D'Souza, S.J. from Belgaum. During this programme we had many healing experiences.

We learned many practical ways to make us more sensitive to life's moments.

The month of July and August witnessed a few noteworthy happenings at Sankhabhanga. On 31 July, the Feast of St Ignatius, the students put up a beautiful, meticulously planned program that lasted for an hour. The inauguration of the feast- day with a prayer service around the statue of St. Ignatius by the road was an impressive one. The first half was dedicated to the school and the second half was graced by Rt Rev. Simon Kaipuram, the Bishop of Balasore. The local religious, nearly 30 of them, shared a festal dinner with the Jesuits. All the 5 Jesuits made significant contribution to make this day a success.

As for the affiliation to ICSE, the preliminary filling-in-forms is done. A few to and fro correspondence between the Council and the school is over. The inspection has been announced for 22 September. Preparation is in

full swing to fulfil the requirements needed for Affiliation. The inspectors have been deputed from Bishop Westcott Girls' School, Ranchi. Locally, there is hope tinged with a little anxiety that keeps us all on tenterhooks – for a promising end. The new wing is rising by the day and at a rapid pace.

In the middle of August Frs. James Tharaniyil and Julian Ekka made a trip to Bhubaneswar to attend the AGM of LES and to participate in the Jubilee Celebration. In their absence, Independence Day was observed in the school, led by Fr. Victor Joseph. It made it appear like that of the 'Red Fort' - sans PM and VIP's, yet the National Anthem resounded in the air.

Towards the end of A u g u s t , J a m e s T h a r n i w e n t t o Kolkata and flew to Port Blair to attend the ICSE Odisha Zonal Meet. This Meet was fixed much earlier when James was a P r i n c i p a l o f S t .

In a letter to the Provincial and the Odisha Mission Superior, the Bishop of Rourkela expressed a strong plea that He would like to have the Jesuits back to run the Govt-aided school in Tangrain – which has been shut down for want of teachers. So, the Provincial, in consultation with the Odisha Mission Superior and his Consultors, delegated Fr. Pius (a vet in the field of education) and Fr. Augustine Ezhakunnel (al legal eagle) to inspect the premises – land papers – meet the people and send in their assessment to the Provincial.

Action Taken Report

Fr. Pius Fernandes accompanied Fr. Gus Ezhakunnel on a doctor's visit – fact-finding visit to 'Neverland" Tangrain. We were politely informed by Frs. Bernard Surin and Mukti Clarence that a herd of wild tuskers were in the vicinity since three days. In spite of this, about two dozen village leaders met us at dusk with an earnest appeal to the Provincial to educate their children just like Jesuits used to do in the past …

We crossed the river which was in ' fu l l spate' by boat. Feeling the rush of the wind, Gus whispered in my ears that, if he had suff icient faith, he would have preferred walking on the waters. We 'made it' in the

Ranjit

t hc o m m e m o r a t i o n o f 2 0 0 Anniversary of the Restoration of the Society of Jesus on 7 August.

On 24 August we paid a visit to all Jesuit houses and inst i tut ions in Hazaribag town. We cherish and appreciate the warm hospitality of

the Jesuits of these institutions. The last Sunday of this month w a s k e p t a s a D a y o f Recollection and Integration, directed by Fr. Samir Toppo.

Community: Amidst incessant rain pouring outdoors, “Loyola Day Celebration” kicked off uninterrupted in the multi-purpose hall with a Solemn Eucharist presided over by Fr. Jugal Kishore Digal, the parish priest of Kurtumgarh Parish. Apart from almost all the Jesuits of Kandhamal, as many as 15 priests, scores of Sisters and hundreds of distinguished guests were present at the f e a s t d a y E u c h a r i s t i c celebration. During his homily, Fr. Jugal Kishore Digal, the Main Celebrant of the day, e u l o g i z e d t h e J e s u i t contribution to the poor and downtrodden of Kandhamal.

A f t e r t h e E u c h a r i s t i c celebration, the school children staged a colourful and mind-blowing cultural programme. A spectacular dramatic piece, the secularized version of the Restoration of the Society of Jesus, received rounds of applause and some monetary rewards from “Thana Babu” (Police Station in-Charge). The Chief Guest for the cultural

programme, Fr. Pradose Ch. Nayak, the Dean of Balliguda Deanery, highly appreciated the quality performance of our school children. He further exhorted them, “Janile Jitebo” (If you know, you will win).

On 6 August, Kandhamal Jesuits celebrated the Restoration of the Society of Jesus at Divyanugrah, Tumudibandha. It is because of

regular celebration and get-together; many Kandhamal Jesuits are gradually coming together as a team.

Parish: As the preparation for the Mothers' Day celebration, Fr. Gyan P. Kujur preached a three-day Ignatian Retreat from familial perspectives to more than 60 mothers of our Tumudibandha Parish. According to Fr. Gyan, many mothers are keenly interested in making retreats and so, patiently jot down all the inputs, “food for change”.

Apart from just pastoral care, Fr. Romanus Kerketta seeks holistic transformation of our Parish so as to make 'Incarnation' more down-to-earth. In the process, a rice-mill will be soon installed at Roda with the co-operation of the Archdiocese.

Odisha Citizen's Initiatives: “Film Show” on Teacher's Day Celebration continued to dominate the month of August in both Gram Panchayats – Mundigada and Subarnagiri. Undoubtedly, this programme functioned as confidence-boosters for both school children and teachers.

As a noble attempt of Second Phase Green Revolution, line method paddy cultivation is gradually gaining ground in Odisha with so m a n y s c h e m e s a n d i n c e n t i v e s . I n collaboration with the agriculture department, an in-field demonstration training was organized for the farmers of Subarnagiri GP. It is worth-mentioning that one village called Madapaju which refrained from line method cultivation for the last five years, has now happily adopted this method due to its high yielding capacity.

In the Mundigada GP, a training programme on ground-nut cultivation was organized at Tutuluba. Instead of chemical fertilizers, vermi-compost is being popularized throughout Kandhamal. As a matter of fact, OCI is all set for the distr ibut ion of vermi-compost equipment.

On 15 August, OCI organized Independence Day celebration at the remotest possible schools of both GPs. After the celebration, a short meeting was conducted for children, teachers, guests and villagers at Madaspaju School of Mundigada GP. In the meeting, Fr. Gyan P. Kujur asked children, “Do you dream?” and all answered 'Yes'. He further asked, “When?” and they answered “at night”. For the personal and national development, Fr. Gyan suggested to the children to dream during the day time. Hats off to Fr. Gyan for his inspiring message!
