LAPTOP LAUNCH

Stacey Senior High is in the sixth year of its 1 to 1 laptop program. All 9th through 12th grade students have the opportunity to use a laptop computer as a part of their daily in-

classroom instruction. Additionally, with parent permission, students may elect to use the laptop on a 24/7 basis. The focus of the laptop program is on using technology as a tool for

increasing academic performance.

On Thursday, August 26th, over 100 families came to the Cynthia Lyon Center for the Parent Laptop Program meeting. Students and parents planning to participate in the program

learned about laptops, how to care for them, and how to help students take responsibility for the laptops. The main objective of the laptop program is to ensure that students are

prepared to succeed as 21st century learners. Research projects provide the opportunity for students to utilize our subscriptions to online databases such as Wilson Web, Facts on File,

and Britannica Online. Teachers are using our Stacey Moodle, an online course management system, to organize instructional materials and even to provide video

instruction to students. We continue to use our Lackland ISD Google Apps for Education website to provide filtered access and controlled email to our students. In addition, students will use the Google Docs productivity suite associated with their account to create, manage,

and store documents, presentations and projects.

If you missed the Parent Laptop Program meeting please arrange a time to meet with Ms. Denny, our instructional technologist by calling the Stacey office at 210-357-5100 or email

Ms. Denny at [email protected].

Working Together to Change the World is

Buckets of Fun!

You may have walked through the 1st grade hallway and seen white buckets for each child. All of the classes read a book titled Have you Filled a Bucket

Today? by Carol McCloud. It is “a guide to daily happiness for kids. The book explains that we all have an imaginary bucket we carry with us that

holds our feelings. The story discusses how filling another person’s bucket with positive sayings makes a person feel good.

First graders will be “filling buckets” of classmates with positive, friendly sayings.

Feel free to come by and drop a note in a child’s bucket if you catch that child doing something wonderful.

This past Tuesday the Lady Eagle volleyball teams took on Cole High School in some hard fought matches. Congratulations to the JV team who won their match beating Cole’s JV in two straight

games. The varsity girls lost a heartbreaker taking Cole to a deciding 5th game after having split the first four. Their effort was terrific and they showed class and poise as they took the defeat as a

learning experience. Way to go ladies!

Ms. Regino’s 2nd graders made a

special card to celebrate Mrs. Norton’s birthday! Students picked out special stickers just for her and decorated the card. They were so

proud of their work and so happy to give it to our principal. We all hope

Mrs. Norton has a wonderful birthday!

If you would like something fun and creative to do for the whole family, check out the free "Family Day" at the San Antonio Museum of Art. From 1:00 to 5:00 on the 1st Sunday of every month, families can visit the museum and do several art projects

with local artists including our own Mr. Garcia. For more information, please contact the San Antonio Museum of Art at (210) 978-8100 or [email protected].

Bearded Dragon lizards, also known as “beardies”, have arrived at Lackland Elementary school. 4 of these Australian lizards, along with two smaller

uromastyx lizards, have taken up residence in Mr. Stuart’s and Ms. DiGiampaolo’s classrooms.

They each have their own enclosure and seem to be adapting nicely to their new environment.

Students have enjoyed watching the beardies eat crickets and are also Learning how to prepare the fresh greens and fruit that the lizards must eat

on a daily basis. Bearded dragons make excellent pets as they are somewhat social, yet gentle,

and love To be held.

Check back in the weeks ahead as there are sure to be new lizard pictures to follow!

SUCCESSFUL DRILL On Tuesday, August 31, Lackland Air Force Base and Randolph Air Force Base conducted a shooter exercise in order to duplicate the incident at Fort Hood that occurred earlier this year.  As part of the

exercise, Lackland ISD was asked to follow a variety of safety measures issued by the base Emergency Exercise team.  Students and staff were to remain in classrooms, window blinds were shut, and all doors were locked.  Lackland ISD Executive Director for Operations, Mr. Henry Acosta, said the drill went smoothly on both the Stacey and Lackland Elementary campuses.   He also wanted to thank the

teachers and students for their cooperation.

On September 3rd, 1838, dressed as a sailor, African‐American Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey boarded a train in Baltimore, Maryland, a slave state, and rode to Wilmington, Delaware, where he boarded a steamboat to the free city of Philadelphia.  From there he took the train to New York City and entered the underground railway

system that guided runaway slaves to safety.  Bailey, born in February 1817, changed his name to Douglass and became a noted journalist, orator, and antislavery leader.

Recycling is the name of the game here!!

Dear Students, Parents, Faculty, and Staff of Lackland ISD~~ When you recycle your plastic bottles, do you ever wonder what happens to the caps? If you recycle the caps with the regular recycling program, they are simply cut off and discarded…Most of the time, they end up in landfills, beaches, rivers, lakes, etc….. Have you thought of a way you could make a difference? Well now you can! AVEDA has a recycling program that has “the cure.” Stacey Jr.’Sr. High School is a proud part of Lackland’s overall recycling efforts and is sponsoring the AVEDA program for recycling plastic screw-top lids from such things as soda bottles, shampoo bottles, peanut butter jars, etc... By sending in all of our bottle caps to AVEDA, we can help save the future of our planet. So, take a stand! You can make one change today and see the epic results tomorrow!!! The caps we are looking for are hard “rigid” twist off caps. There are collection containers located all around both campuses, so it shouldn’t be hard to find one!

If you have any questions or comments, please contact Jania Nicholson or D.R. Stiller.
