CEDRAT TECHNOLOGIES has developed a range of reliable piezoelectric products for high bandwidth

& precise motion: APATM and PPA actuators as well as various precision mechanisms with driving and

control electronics. Applications include environmental testing of materials and electronic devices,

vibrations and fatigue tests, micro nano positioning, micro scanning, laser cavity tuning, optic fibber

stretching, vibration generation, vibration control (active damping, isolation), fast machining, mirror tilting,

flap control, fluid control (metering valve, injection)…

CEDRAT TECHNOLOGIES is developing a new range of sensors and detection system solution, based

on magnetic or piezoelectric technologies

Sensors and detection systems

> Low cost eddy current sensors and conditioner: In a context of always smaller and smarter mechatronic devices, the need of more integrated sensors

becomes critical. Particularly, small mechanisms using small actuators like piezo actuators require

compact sensors, with performances that measure up to the actuators characteristics. Eddy current

sensors are widely used for non contact position,

displacement, and proximity measurement with very

good performances (bandwidth resolution, linearity,

robustness in dirt environment). CEDRAT

TECHNOLOGIES propose solutions based on

probes made on multilayer printed circuit.

Customized realisation and design are available.

> CTS, new kind of contact less torque sensor, and even more: To overcome traditional limitations of torque sensor,

and provide in the same time, in one sensor, the

torque, the speed and the position, CEDRAT

TECHNOLOGIES has developed a new sensor named

CTS.

Reliable, easy integration on existing or new design, the CTS is dedicated to simplify engineering for the

development of mechatronic systems. This torque sensor is contact less, compatible with severe

environments, reliable, compatible with every shaft materials. It works on the measure of the shaft

torsion and is the fruit of CEDRAT TECHNOLOGIES skill in small displacement and mechanical

amplification. Optional measures such as speed and position can be integrated directly within the CTS.

Not an off he shelf product, the CTS is adapted to be compatible with customers designs and

requirements.

> Ultrasonic based structural health monitoring Ultrasonic-based SHM (Structural Health Monitoring)

applications commonly rely on the use of piezo-electrical

patches to emit and receive ultrasonic waves. Because of

the elevated number of echoes and possible modes of

propagation of the waves within the structure, those

applications suffer a burden of signal processing.

The reduction of the complexity of the SHM detection

schemes is based on selecting the mode and direction of

the Lamb waves received. The piezo-composite is

composed of a row of eight independent ceramic pillars separated with polymer, so it is a 1-D matrix of

independent piezo-patches. Used with adequate electronics and signal pre-processing, it was shown

that it allowed selecting direction and mode of the Lamb wave received.

Piezo actuators and piezo mechanisms, a solution for testing

> Parallel Prestress Actuators PPAs perform short strokes (0-200micron) and high forces (0-10kN).

These actuators are based on an external frame to prestress the piezo

Ceramics and to provide metal interfaces. Special hollow versions,

called HPPA have been developed for laser cavity tuning in Lidars.

APATM& PPA

> Amplified Piezo Actuators APATM perform medium strokes (0-1mm) and high forces (0-10kN). These actuators are based on a

shell to prestress the piezo ceramics, to amplify the piezoceramic stroke and to provide metal interfaces.

The shell also protects the piezo ceramic and renders the actuator insensitive to off-axis forces. Thanks

to the amplification, the actuator axial deformation can reach almost 10%. For example the APA 900M

can provide a stroke of 800µm in a height of only 10mm. Efficiency of the amplification has been

optimised to keep useful force and stiffness.

Because of their structure and their prestress, these PPA and APATM actuators can bear large stresses.

Thus, they can be used in dynamic applications offering a large lifetime (>1010 cycles). This is beneficial

in micro-scanners, fast shutters, fast tunning, piezo motors, machining …They can also be operated at

resonance for sonic and ultrasonic vibrations generation, as for glass cutting.

CEDRAT TECHNOLOGIES S.A. 15, Chemin de Malacher Inovallée – 38246 MEYLAN Cedex (France) – Tél : +33 (0)4 76 90 50 45 – Fax : +33 (0)4 56 38 08 30 – Email : [email protected] Société Anonyme au capital de 550 000 € - R.C. GRENOBLE 77 B 0242 – SIRET 310 416 334 00038 – TVA intracommunautaire FR 29 310 416 334 BNP MEYLAN FRANCE RIB 30004 01285 00028 016118 94 – Iban FR76 3000 4012 8500 0280 1611 894 – SWIFT BNPAFRPPAAE.

At last they can bear high external vibrations. It is why they have been adopted in a lot of embedded

applications, such as space telescopes and microscopes, military IR cameras (brand names include

NASA, ESA, THALES …).

The other advantages of APATM and PPAs are high force, rather large displacements, with nanometre

resolution. These actuators, especially the APATM can be scaled to the applications. Toward

miniaturisation, micro actuators APA 150XXS offer a stroke of 0.15mm and a force of 6N with a mass of

about 1gr. Toward very large actuators, an APA 500XXL of 0.5mm stroke and 10kN force has been

realised for ESO ELT telescope. A large series of actuators

cover all intermediate size, with various stroke up to 1mm and

forces. Optionally, PPAs and APATM are cryogenic, non-magnetic,

vacuum compatible, mechanically damped for reducing effects of

vibrations, strain-gages equipped.

Piezo actuators & electronic devices

APATM and PPAs have a very strong heritage

from air, space and military fields but CEDRAT TECHNOLOGIES industrialisation efforts have made

them cost-effective.

> Various mechanisms have been (or can be) developed using these APATM and PPA

components:

X, XY and XYZ stages are APATM - based X, XY and XYZ

mechanisms offering guided motion of 20 to 400 microns.

X and XY stages are thermally compensated. They

can be controlled by strain gages or by Eddy Current Sensors

for close loop operations. The OPDA is a special X stage

developed for Oerlikon Contraves for LISA space mission. XY 25XS Stage

TT and DTT mechanisms are APATM - based single or double tilt mechanisms of up to 10 mrad

rotations, which can be combined with XY and XYZ stages.

OPP is an Objective Piezo Positionner for refocusing functions in optic microscopes; The guided z-

stroke is 140micron.

FPS are Fast Piezo Shutters, the opening slot of which is up to 400micron;

They are used for switching laser beams and for X-ray beams.

FPS200M

SPA are new linear Stepping Piezo Motors for stroke up to 20mm with blocking at rest, benefiting of the

APATM heritage. They can perform this long stroke by accumulation of small controllable steps.

Using additional fine mode, they also offer a positioning capabilities of less than 1 nm along the 20mm

stroke. This new technology receives a MICRONORA2008 Golden Micron Award. Although all APATM

can be used to realise SPA motors, the trend is to expand the range of products toward micro motors.

CEDRAT TECHNOLOGIES has developed several classes of low-voltage Piezo Actuators to cover a

wide range of needs and application. APATM are solid-state long stroke linear actuators. They are based

on the expansion of the active material and on a mechanism for amplifying the displacement. APATM

offer high displacements combined with large forces and compact size along the active axis.

Piezo evaluation pack : APA 120S & CAµ10 amplifier

The evaluation pack aims at an easy evaluation of the

CEDRAT TECHNOLOGIES’offer in static conditions.

It includes:

• An amplified actuator APA120S

• A linear amplifier CAµ10

• Connectors APA 120S/CAµ10/Connectors

The actuator APA120S can bear load up to 0.5 kg over 140µm and in a compact size.Is the highest

stroke and lowest force version of the Amplified Piezo Actuator S series.

The CAµ10 can deliver a voltage up to 150V and has 2 channels.

It is a unipolar (5V..150V) miniature linear amplifier with low noise and low cost features. A SPI digital to

analogue converter is able to convert 12 bits words in analogue signal for the linear amplifier. Optional

inputs can be connected if necessary to shunt the SPI bus and send directly the analogue order on the

linear amplifiers. The CAµ10 is compatible with the numeric controller UC45.

The main features enlightened by the evaluation pack are: • A high stiffness of the actuator

• A nanometer resolution

• A good repeatability

• An excellent reliability

Stepping Piezo Actuator

This new technology has received a MICRONORA 2008 Golden Micron Award. SPAs are new linear Stepping Piezo Motors for stroke up to 20mm with blocking at rest, benefiting of the

APATM heritage. They can perform this long stroke by accumulation of small controllable steps. Using

additional fine mode, they also offer a positioning capabilities of less than 1 nm along the 20mm stroke.

Between each step the actuator is locked in position. When the long stroke is performed, it can be also

operated in a deformation mode for a fine adjustment. In this case, the stroke is proportional to the

applied voltage, which leads to a nanometer resolution and a high bandwidth.

This actuator can be supplied with CEDRAT TECHNOLOGIES standard Linear Amplifiers.

SPAs offer:

- A blocking at rest in any position (locking without power supply),

high stiffness,

- A nano positioning resolution all along the stroke

- Non magnetic behavior
