Head Lice Clinic and Workshop

Please plan ahead to be at a head lice clinic and workshop that we will be having on the evening of Thursday, May 15.

Education is truly our best defense against head lice outbreaks. You will learn about safe options for treatment, basic head lice facts and preventive measures. The work-shop will be FREE and is open to all mem-bers of the community.

A time and location will be announced.

Infant/Toddler

Happy birthday to Delissa in January, Jack and Aurora in February, Elizabeth, Reese, Ala and Ramona in March.

Zoe and Nevaeh have now moved over to the Head Start room and we miss them very much. There are some spaces available for day care in the Infant/Toddler Room.

Spring weather encourages us to get out-side and everyone needs appropriate cloth-ing and shoes or boots. We like to see that footwear fits well, otherwise the children trip up and fall. There are many birds and animals in our neighbourhood and we love to take walks to Komasket Park.

Hopefully the cold season is over and ev-eryone is healthy and happy this spring. Colds tend to slow down most of the ba-bies during the winter months. We closely watch for fevers and allergic reactions and when our babies are sick it concerns the whole centre. Understandably parents are stressed if asked to find alternate child care when their child can’t attend day care. Ev-erything usually works out for the best in the long run.

Snc’c’amala?tn NewsFrom the Director/Principal

Lorraine Ladan

Welcome,

Ashley Pickard and Katelyn Abel are working as Special Needs Assistants at Snc’c’amala?tn until the end of June. It is great to have them here to support the children.

Karen Herriot is an Early Childhood Educa-tion student from Okanagan College. She is doing a practicum in the Head Start / 3 to 5 Year Old Daycare room. Welcome Karen.

Bobby Louis has been driving the school bus while our regular driver, Bill Yampolsky, is recovering from a badly broken wrist. Thank you Bobby!

Darlene Bonsan has been keeping our building clean and sanitary. Thank you for so cheerfully putting up with our messes.

WITS Program

All of the staff recently had training in the WITS program. This program helps chil-dren deal with bullying and victimization and helps teachers respond better when approached by a child who feels they are being bullied. We have started to use some of the curriculum materials with the kinder-garten children.

Closures

March 24 to 28 – SPRING BREAK – Pre-school, Kindergarten and the Cultural Im-mersion School will be closed. The daycare will remain open.

Preschool

Wi, from the Speplina Room!

Will winter end? The groundhog was cor-rect this year; it’s been a long winter. The children enjoyed all the snow that we had for winter fun day. We made snowmen, sprayed them with colored water; beautiful red, blue, purple and green, played tug o’ war with the kindergarten and tag.

Mona Tronson brought out the snowshoes for the preschoolers to try. Hopefully spring will come and we can go on our nature walks to Komasket. We will be watching out for all the signs of spring. If you have any ques-tions or concerns, contact Karla or Donna: 250-545-3800.

Thank you,

Karla and Donna Aryanna

Kindergarten

Wi from the P’qel qin room,

In the Kindergarten classroom in Febru-ary we celebrated Valentine’s Day and our 100th Day of School.

On Valentine’s Day we exchanged cards. The class made cards for their families and we enjoyed some treats. For our 100th day of school the students made posters with 100 objects and necklaces with 100 fruit loops. We learned to count to 100 by 1’s and 10’s. Thank you to all the families for sending in yummy snacks to contribute to our 100 day trail mix snack and to Trish for making a 100 day cake to help us celebrate!

The new letters and sounds we have learned this past month are B, G, L and E. In math we have been making and creating sets, learning about problem solving, and are now beginning to learn about money, including pennies and dimes.

We have concluded our unit on how to be Heart Smart, including, eating healthy, be-ing active and living smoke free. Congratulations to Mattias, Taylor Louis, Zayden, Taylor Lalonde, Koenn, Jason, Robert, Rowyn, Anthony, Eva, Yesenia and Kimmimela for having completed their first home reading sheet this year by reading a total of 30 books and to Tanner, Zaley and Calder for finishing their second home read-ing sheets by reading a total of 60 books so far this year. Way to go! Keep up the read-ing!

Mrs. Alexis and Trish JohnsonKindergarten Teacher and Certified Educa-tion Assistant

MARCH 2014Obituaries

A letter from the Family of Violet Marchand

Thank you to all of Violet`s Doctors, nurses workers and Marc Tey for the care and com-fort that they provided during her illness and hospice stay. Also Thank you to all family and friends who did the cooking, made donations and helped in so many other ways during the wake and funeral. We will never forget your kindness and support.

MarthaPoley (Marchand)

October 9, 1954 – December 29, 2013

A kind and gentle soul left this earth surrounded by her loving friends and family. Martha Marie Poley passed away suddenly and unex-pectedly at the Vernon Jubi-

lee Hospital on Sunday, December 29, 2013. Martha shared her kindness in so many ways with all who knew her. She had a warm smile for everyone, was gener-ous with her legendary baking, especially her carrot cake, and was never too busy to talk. Martha grew up on the Coyote Creek Ranch on Westside Road, the second young-est of 14 children. After graduating from VSS, she worked at then CJIB Radio for a number of years before starting in the Public Works Department of the Okanagan Indian Band, where she worked for 13 years. Martha was truly happy surrounded by her large extend-ed family and she rarely missed a family gathering. She and her husband, Dave, also enjoyed traveling with close friends. Where there was Martha, there was laughter. Left to mourn Martha is her husband of 20 years, Dave, her son Nicholas (Leann) Marchand and her grandsons, who she loved beyond compare, Klayton and Evan March-and. Martha is further survived by her siblings, Vera Cam-eron, June Cole, Vernetta McMillan, Laura (Eddy) Miller, Ted (Maureen) Marchand, Anna Marchand and Deb (Rick) Nicholas, stepchildren, Michelle, Ross and Lee-Anne, close friends Karen Babiuk, Kurt and Mary Vock and Mary and Rick White, plus numerous nieces, nephews and cousins who will all miss her dearly. Martha was predeceased by parents, Louie and Janie Marchand, sisters Sadie Gregory, Bernice Lewis, Rose Derrickson, infant brothers Louie and Ernie and brothers-in-law, Hector Lewis, Thunder Derrick-son, Jim Cameron, Buck McMillan and Jack Cole. A funeral mass was held on Friday, January 3, 2014 at 11:00am at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church at Head of the Lake. Thank you to the many visitors who brought flowers, food, comfort and support. A special thank you to the doctors and staff in the Vernon Jubilee Hospital ICU who worked valiantly to try and keep Martha with us.
