JCSC Foundation NewsThank you for the generous response to the Foundation’s Christmas Box Project. Many seniors will receive a Christmas Box full of grocery items, paper goods and detergents that will provide for basic needs for several weeks. If you plan to make a donation but haven’t done so, the last day to donate items for a box is Monday, December 7. Cash donations are accepted at any time. You may also purchase a box in honor of a family member or friend at a cost of $55, and that person will receive a card acknowledging a gift in their honor. The list of donors for the fall fund drive and the Christmas box project will appear in the January newsletter. Again, we can’t say thank you often enough for your generosity!

In April, the Foundation will hold the inaugural run of the Deerslayer OCR 5K. Deerslayer is the first event of its kind in Johnson City: a 3.2 mile race across mixed terrain, with 19 obstacles to overcome along the way. There will be a competitive timed division as well as a Just-For-Fun division for individuals or teams. You must be 18 years or older to enter. Not interested in competing – then volunteer at the event! We will need many volunteers; this will be an exciting day and you’ll want to be a part of it! Circle April 16 on your calendar, and we’ll see you at Winged Deer Park.

December 2015

When Johnson City schools are closed due to inclement weather, Memorial Park Community Center will open at 10:00 a.m. for access to the following areas: fitness room, gymnasium, game room, billiards room, and pool (for open/lap swim and open therapy only). Scheduled events and instructor-led programs will be cancelled. The centers will close at 5:00 p.m.

When Johnson City Schools are on a delay due to inclement weather, community centers, art center and pools, will open at 10:00 am and all events and programs will begin at 10:00 am. Each location will close at normal closing hours, unless inclement weather occurs later in the day that forces closure.

When schools let out early due to inclement weather all programs and events scheduled for the remainder of the day will be cancelled. If inclement weather occurs on a weekend when schools are not in session the Parks & Recreation Department Director will determine when parks and centers would open and make a decision by 6:00 am.

Transportation will not be provided when Johnson City Schools are closed or let out early due to inclement weather.

For Announcements about schedule changes call 434-5750.

Hip HikersDecember 2015

Ten years ago, five participants formed the Hip Hikers group and continue to hike with Mike Woods every month! Thousands of miles later and much of it on challenging trails, the group has grown to over 30 participants. What an inspiration!

This group draws attention almost everywhere they hike and now that recognition has gone regional. On October 12, 2015, the Hip Hikers received a Positive Images in Aging Award at the Southeastern Association of Area Agencies on Aging Conference in Savannah, GA. This group exemplifies active aging and I encourage each of you to find an activity that ignites your passion for an active life through active living. Thanks Hip Hikers for helping the Johnson City Senior Center set the standard for excellence in programming for the entire southeast region!

Pictured above are the original 5 hip hikers who have been hiking together for the past 10 years. From left to right: Jean Sprinkle, Russ Rivers, Mike Woods, Harry Ford and Helen Bowers.

Seniors take a lunch break at Mouse Falls.

The Hip Hikers are on break until the February hiking meeting. Enjoy the holidays and we’ll see you in 2016!

Scam of the Month-November 2015 SNAP Scammers There are reports of a nationwide scam regarding food stamps, now called SNAP. In this scam seniors receive unsolicited calls from what appears to be the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) toll-free hotline number. In reality the scammers have “spoofed” the hotline and they are not affiliated with the USDA Food and Nutrition Service.

The callers request personal information and offer assistance for filling out applications for SNAP and other services. Never provide personal information or a credit card number to unsolicited callers. Use trusted agencies and sites to apply for SNAP. In our area that includes the county offices of the Tennessee Department of Human Services which administers the SNAP program.

An online application is available atwww.tn.gov/humanserv.

Community Food Advocates at 1-855-277-0964 can also assist in applying and for general information. Source: National Council on Aging

Travel Corner December 2015It’s been a great travel year for JCSC Seniors on the Go! We’ve heard rave reviews of the trips to Boston, the Western National Parks, the Canadian Maritimes, and New York City. Thank you for your participation. We have a selection of trips for every interest in 2016. The motorcoach trip to Maine is filling fast if you’re interested in this trip you need to make a deposit soon before the bus is full. Every trip offered by Diamond Tours to Maine is already booked, so this will be the only opportunity in 2016. We’ve also had good interest in the England and Paris trip and the late fall Washington, DC trip. The annual New York City trip, a crowd favorite, has been moved back a few weeks to mid-October in 2016.

Have a blessed Christmas season. If you’re looking for that perfect gift for the person who has everything, consider a trip with JCSC Seniors on the Go!

The Benefits ofDrinking WaterGetting enough water is important for your health. Water helps your body by keeping your temperature normal, lubricating and cushioning your joints, protecting your spinal cord and other sensitive tissues, and helps get rid of waste products through urination, perspiration, and bowel movements. As we get older, you might lose your sense of thirst. You simply do not feel the need to drink water, but your body does need it to function properly. There are some medications that make it even more important to drink plenty of water. Ask your doctor what they recommend for your daily intake of water/ fluids. This is particularly important if you have fluid restrictions because of heart or kidney problems.

Here are some ways to increase your intake of water:

• Take sips from a glass of water, milk or juice between bites during your meals.

• Drink a full glass of water when you take a pill.

• Take a bottle of water with you in the car when you are doing errands and when you come to exercise classes. Drink water before class, during class and after class.

• Don`t stop drinking liquids if you have a urinary control problem. Talk to your doctor about treatment.

• Take sips of water throughout the day while you are watching TV or reading.

Water truly is life. Adequate water intake helps keep your body running smoothly. Stop by the Nurses Office for a free water bottle to help you stay hydrated here and on the go!
