Senior Executive Census 2018
page 1
Message from Chief Executive Women
Chief Executive Women is pleased to present the results
of our second annual ASX200 Senior Executive Census.
The purpose of the Census is to measure the year on year
progress made by the ASX200 companies in improving
female representation in the executive leadership team.
Alongside the aggregate measurements of the ASX200
leadership teams, the Census focuses on female representation
in “line” and “function” roles within executive leadership teams.
Line roles are those that directly drive key commercial outcomes
in a business and usually involve profit and loss accountability. Traditionally, line roles are a stepping stone to becoming a CEO.
In contrast, functional roles govern specific operations of an organisation such as legal, compliance or human resources.
Of these, the role of CFO, which is frequently one of the most
senior and influential roles in the executive leadership team, can also be a direct pathway to a CEO role.
There are some significant improvements to recognise in 2018: the number of companies with no women in the executive
leadership team has almost halved in the last year, and there
are increases in the number of women in CEO, CFO, Group
Executive and functional roles. 17% of the 23 new CEO’s now
heading up ASX200 companies are women.
There are areas with little or no improvement, including
female representation in line roles. More than half the ASX200
companies still have no women in line roles in their executive
leadership team.
Given that gender balance is commonly expressed as being
40% of each gender and 20% of either gender, the 2018 Senior
Executive Census shows that 21 ASX200 companies acheived
gender balance in their executive leadership teams, having 40%
to 60% females in their teams - up from 16 companies last year.
CEW’s mission is ‘women leaders enabling women leaders’.
We know that measuring performance is important and the
2018 Senior Executive Census provides visibility of the
representation of women in leadership in Australia’s largest
listed organisations. And while progress has been acheived
since the last year on our goal of equal representation,
clearly there is still some way to go.

Achieving gender balance requires leadership and takes time. Research and our
experience confirm that the Chairman, Board, CEO and leadership team must all be committed to gender balance as a priority; otherwise, the company is unlikely to
make progress. This leadership commitment must also translate into visible action and
regular communication on why gender balance matters and how everyone benefits.
CEW has developed the following programs designed to help forward-thinking
organisations take steps towards improving gender balance in their executive
leadership teams.
Gender balance takes leadership
CEO ConversationCEW’s CEO Conversation is a powerful and bespoke tool to support
CEOs lead their organisation’s gender diversity strategy with their
senior executive team. It has been designed to engage the most
senior leaders in understanding the important role they play in driving
the advancement of women in their organisation.
The CEW CEO conversation involves a dialogue with three CEW
members, selected on the basis of their experience and relevance to
your company’s strategic priorities, challenges and sector.
More detail can be found at https://cew.org.au/programs/
Your Leadership Shadow involves workshops with business leaders, facilitated by a CEW member, using the Leadership Shadow model.
The model was developed by CEW in collaboration with the Male
Champions of Change and is a valuable resource for a broad range
of organisations who want to create a diverse organisational culture.
The program also helps participants think through how they become
a leader in their own organisation to bring about meaningful change
for gender diversity.
Your Leadership Shadow
The Chairman Conversation provides the opportunity for the board,
alongside CEW members, to discuss the organisation’s strengths
and challenges and identify actions that will help the organisation
progress gender equity.
The Chairman Conversation evolved from Boards for Balance: Your Leadership Shadow developed by CEW and the Australian Institute
of Company Directors (AICD). Boards for Balance applies the latest, best-practice research and experiences of CEW members, chairs,
non-executive directors and CEOs who believe boards play a vital
role in driving gender balance in organisations.
The Chairman Conversation
This Program is a bespoke leadership program developed and
delivered by CEW members to inspire and equip women to fulfil their leadership potential. The program encourages women to take their
place alongside men so that organisations deliver the best possible
outcome for customers, shareholders and the community.
The CEW Leaders Program is in its 13th year of operation and each
year 190 women from over 40 organisations participate. The
program is offered annually in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Singapore and now has over 1,200 alumni who have been
instrumental in helping organisations create a more diverse approach
to leadership through promotion to executive roles.
The CEW Leaders Program

Chief Executive Women was founded in 1985 and now represents
over 500 of Australia’s most senior and distinguished women leaders,
whose shared vision is Women Leaders Enabling Women Leaders.
CEW strives to educate and influence all levels of Australian business and government on the importance of gender balance. Through advocacy,
targeted programs and scholarships, CEW works to remove the barriers
to women’s progression and ensure equal opportunity for prosperity.
CEW’s programs are informed by research, led by CEW members,
and generously supported by our partners.

Data for the census was collected on 1 August 2018 from each company’s website by Bain & Company. Job titles were standardised with the
assistance of Spencer Stuart. Bain & Company then compared the results
with the baseline figures established by the 2017 Senior Executive Census.
Executive leadership team (ELT): We have recorded the ELT for the ASX200 (as at 1 August 2018), where ELT is defined as all direct reports into the CEO.
a. All companies have been treated the same way for comparison year-on-year and between companies
b. Executive Chairman are not included, unless there is no CEO or Managing Directorc. Executive Directors and Company Secretaries are not included,
except if explicitly listed as being part of the ELTd. New CEOs are defined as those who were appointed between 2 August 2017 and 1 August 2018. Interim CEOs were not included.
Line/Function: We have classified all roles using the same principles.
a. Line roles: defined as those that drive key commercial outcomes and usually with P&L responsibility, including CEO/MD, COO and Group Executives
b. Function roles: all other roles, including Strategy, Finance, Human Resources, Corporate Affairs/Investor Relations, Legal, IT, Health & Safety, R&D, Manufacturing & Supply Chain, Chief of Staff, Company Secretaries and Other (e.g. Medical Officers)
c. Please note: roles that contain commercial, product or customer in their title have been reviewed on a case by case basis.
