Director’s Corner %It’s a hot one. One of the hottest summers on

record. Given a choice, I will take 100 degrees over0 degrees any day. But when it is this hot, even myair conditioner is crying Uncle! My grass looks like

hay. The few flowers that manage to eek out anexistence in my yard are screaming for rain. And

the forecast doesn’t look good for the next 10 days.No rain. Just hot, and hotter. I should be complaining, but it actually makes me reminisce about howwe “beat the heat” when I was a kid. I have such

fond memories of trying to stay cool during thesummer. When I was very young, we didn’t have air

conditioning and my mom would put a pan of icewater in front of a fan and we would lay in front of itfor a few minutes. Not very long though, my mom

was always worried about getting a cold in ourmuscles (bells palsy). On nights when it was partic

ularly unbearable we would take a drive downLakeshore Dr. and she would stop and let us jump

into Lake Michigan at a beach called VacationParadise in the Pines. It sure felt like paradise. OnFriday nights we could stop at the Dairy Queen foran ice cream cone, then over to Ames Field to playon the playground (that used to be there), and thena swim at Washington Park beach. I remember at

my Dad’s Tree Nursery there was a little shed Iguess you would call it. I thought it was a mini

guest house. It had a bench inside with a cushionand windows that propped open to let in a breeze. Iremember dozing off on the bench reading a bookand letting the cool air lull me off to sleep. As I gotolder my mom purchased a window air conditioner

and it cooled off our living room enough to make thesummer nights bearable. My mom, my baby brother

and I all slept in that living room on the pull-outcouch until the heat subsided. I remember playing inthe hose in the front yard that had a sprinkler thatattached to it that provided hours of entertainment, and a way to stay cool. And finally, we camped at

Rolling Timbers Campground each summer and ourlittle trailer was always near the pool. I had raceswith the other campground kids to see who couldhold their breath the longest while swimming fromone end of the pool to the other. And we did handstands under water and walked along the bottom

until we got to the deep end. Oh, those are happymemories for me. Yes it’s hot, but the heat bringsback such wonderful memories and I am thankfulfor them all. I’m sure you have memories all your

own. Take a moment and relive them in your mind.I’ll bet you smile... :) Stay cool... .Tara Miller
