Limit your intake to no more than one alcoholic drink per day for women and no more than two drinks per day for men. 4. Plan ahead. Be sure to have an up-to-date list of medicaons you are taking. Senior Neighbors has three buses that are equipped with liſts for wheelchairs, walkers or anyone who cannot use the steps. These buses are dispatched through RideLink. Senior Neighbors is one of five agencies that make up RideLink. RideLink asks for a donaon of $2 each way for a trip. To get a ride you need to call RideLink 4 - 7 days in advance. The phone number is 774-1288. The Senior Neighbor drivers are all well trained individuals who enjoy driving and helping seniors get to their desnaons. Drivers really appreciate a thank you when they do a good job. Being a part of RideLink means that we all have to try to abide by the rules set up by RideLink. For instance, passengers are expected to be ready at the me of their scheduled pick up. All drivers try to be on me. A vehicle might be early or late depending on many factors like the weather and traffic. Traffic accidents and unknown road construcon can make a bus late. Somemes there are mechanical problems with a vehicle. This could possibly cause rides to be canceled. The agencies try hard not to let this happen by having extra vehicles that can be used when a vehicle breaks down. One tough rule is the two bag rule. Because some of the RideLink vehicles are cars, there is a limit of two bags per person per visit to a store. This is hard when you are talking about groceries, but if a car has three people and a wheelchair or walker in the trunk, two bags are all that can fit in the vehicle. This rule is in place so the smallest vehicles have room for everyone’s bags. There is no size limit for the bags. Senior Neighbors also has bus ckets for those who need them. We have Go!Bus, PASS and The Rapid ckets. We pay full price for these ckets. The Go!Bus and PASS ckets are $35 and we ask for a donaon of $21. The Rapid ckets are $13.75 and we ask for a donaon of $8 and the reduced rate for seniors 65 and over are $8.50 and we ask for a donaon of $6. Tickets can be ordered from the Senior Neighbors Central Office or picked up at the Grand Rapids, Grandville or Walker Centers. Donaons are very important to keep these programs running. Every dollar received is important. If you cannot give the requested donaon amount, anything you can give is greatly appreciated.

Five Tips to a Healthier Thanksgiving ~ From SCAN Health Plan Arizona

1. Don't dine alone. Sharing the holiday with others not only lifts your spirits, but provides a well-balanced healthy meal.

2. Mind your heart. Calories and fat still count during the holidays. Overeating can lead to everything from heartburn to a heart attack. Limit gravies, butter and other high-fat choices with plenty of vegetables and lean white meat. If you experience chest pain, don't delay seeing a doctor.

3. Drink in moderation. Besides a nasty hangover and obvious safety hazards, over-imbibing can have many negative effects - some social and some physical - including depression, an inflammation of the pancreas, hepatitis and an irregular heartbeat. Limit your intake to no more than one alcoholic drink per day for women and no more than two drinks per day for men.

4. Plan ahead. Be sure to have an up-to-date list of medications you are taking. If you do face a health emergency during the holidays, it's important for your doctor to know your current medical conditions and have a list of your medications.

5. Keep your health in focus. If you feel under the weather - physically or mentally - during the holidays, don't wait to visit your doctor.

Being able to get around is very important to everyone. Senior Neighbors provides transportation, through RideLink, to adults 60 years and older who live in Kent County and need help getting to appointments, the grocery store, the pharmacy, the senior center for meals and socialization, and any other need that might arise. Senior Neighbors has three buses that are equipped with lifts for wheelchairs, walkers or anyone who cannot use the steps. These buses are dispatched through RideLink. Senior Neighbors is one of five agencies that make up RideLink. RideLink asks for a donation of $2 each way for a trip. To get a ride you need to call RideLink 4 - 7 days in advance. The phone number is 774-1288. The Senior Neighbor drivers are all well trained individuals who enjoy driving and helping seniors get to their destinations. Drivers really appreciate a thank you when they do a good job. Being a part of RideLink means that we all have to try to abide by the rules set up by RideLink. For instance, passengers are expected to be ready at the time of their scheduled pick up. All drivers try to be on time. A vehicle might be early or late depending on many factors like the weather and traffic. Traffic accidents and unknown road construction can make a bus late. Sometimes there are mechanical problems with a vehicle. Senior Neighbors also has bus tickets for those who need them. We have Go!Bus, PASS and The Rapid tickets. We pay full price for these tickets. The Go!Bus and PASS tickets are $35 and we ask for a donation of $21. The Rapid tickets are $13.75 and we ask for a donation of $8 and the reduced rate for seniors 65 and over are $8.50 and we ask for a donation of $6. Tickets can be ordered from the Senior Neighbors Central Office or picked up at the Grand Rapids, Grandville or Walker Centers. Donations are very important to keep these programs running. Every dollar received is important. If you cannot give the requested donation amount, anything you can

Ways to Wellness

Special Note: At the time of this

writing, Walktober is in full

swing. The centers have a lot of

energy and excitement about

getting outside and moving more

to be healthier. Of course, they

also want the coveted Walktober trophy proudly

displayed in their center! Winners will be announced at

the beginning of November. Unfortunately, due to the

timing of this publication, we cannot get the winners

announced in the November newsletter. Stay tuned for

a full report in December’s newsletter.

Keeping your Brain Healthy

November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness

Month. In the twenty years I have been working with

older adults, I have had countless people tell me how

concerned they are that they could develop Alzheimer’s.

Many people are worried about losing their memories,

becoming dependent on others, and the suffering their

families will go through if this were to happen.

The good news is that researchers now believe that we

can delay the onset of Alzheimer’s and other types of

dementia through actively engaging our brain and

keeping it stimulated and challenged. This doesn't

prevent it, but it can delay the onset, giving people more

time to enjoy life and have dignity

Aside from Alzheimer’s Awareness month, November

is also the time our Senior Odyssey season really ramps

up. We are currently working hard on securing a

location, setting a date, and most importantly, recruiting

teams!

If you are reading this and thinking to yourself, “Oh no

I could never do that!” you’re selling yourself short.

You can do it! Being on an Odyssey team encourages

you to be more creative. Odyssey is not about being the

smartest person. It’s about being willing to be creative.

Odyssey is about using experiences and knowledge that

have been growing in your life for decades and making

people laugh. It’s about having fun and getting to know

other people. Odyssey is about giving yourself

permission to engage in something that is enjoyable, but

also good for you! It builds your self esteem, gives you

purpose, challenges you, and makes you smile. You

will meet new friends, fuel your competitive spirit, and

feel good about yourself.

There are two kinds of challenges in Senior Odyssey of

the Mind. Each team is asked to put together a short

skit that may include props, costumes, and scenery. The

basic theme of the skit and some framework are

provided, but how the team puts it all together is up to

each team. The more creative and funny the better!

You don’t have to be an actor. Your job may be just to

hold a prop and never speak! And that is okay, too!

The other challenge teams are given in Senior Odyssey

is what’s called a “spontaneous problem”. Teams

practice these throughout their time together but they

don’t know what type will come up at the competition.

It may involve brainstorming answers to questions like

“What would you not want to hear on an airplane?” or

“Name things that only boys do”. Your team may be

asked to build something with some objects provided, or

solve a hands on brain teaser! Regardless of the type of

problem it is, creativity always counts and the more

creative your answers, the more points your team is

awarded.

Senior Odyssey is a great way to challenge your mind

and have fun. Consider being a part of this program.

Talk to your center coordinator, or contact me to see

what teams are in your area! Hope to see you soon!

Be Well!

From the Coordinator’s Desk ~ Zach Harris Hello Members…. Do you know the purpose of the Advisory Council for SNGR? The Advisory Council consists of a group ideally made up of seven voting members who are active center participants. Non-voting members of the Advisory Council include the Center Representative to the Senior Neighbors Board of Directors and designated Senior Neighbors staff persons. Here are reasons why the Advisory Council is so important. The Council is responsible for the following: To work cooperatively with and support the Center Coordinator and other Senior Neighbors staff. To bring concerns, issues and positive feedback from members of the center to the Council. To help plan and provide programs and activities. To raise funds to be used for activities and center expenses. To recruit new participants to attend the center. To assist in guiding the general operation and maintenance of the center. To promote a welcoming, inclusive, fun atmosphere that will attract and keep new members.

The council is an important piece of infrastructure for the center. I encourage you to get involved and share your ideal with the Council. Your ideals will benefit the center. Thank You!!!

From the Coordinator’s Desk

“Success means we go to sleep at night knowing that our talents and abilities were used in a way that served others.” - Marianne Williamson - What a rewarding way to go through life. If you were able to attend the Center’s Annual Fall Family Fun Night you were witness to these talents and abilities first hand. It took many dedicated volunteers to make the evening a success. Seniors used their talents to run the cake walk, man the games and trick or treat stations, make popcorn, hand out ice cream, make and serve the food. Many hands helped clean up in record time. Why are seniors involved? Because we have ownership of the Center. Our seniors are involved in serving the Center and the Grandville community in many ways. For example, one way is if a person has not been to the Center in awhile, someone will call or visit them to check on them. Everyone in the Senior Neighbors family knows they can depend on each other. With the Thanksgiving Holiday approaching, it’s time to reflect on family, whether made of friends or family members, as well as the many blessings we have in our lives. Thanks to the Grandville Senior Neighbors Center, we have many extended family members. Happy Thanksgiving!

Coordinator’s Corner We will celebrate our Veterans this month as well as celebrate all of the things that we are thankful for! There is always something positive that we can be thankful for no matter what our circumstances are. I am thankful that we have Senior Neighbors and our Center to provide resources for Senior Citizens as well as a place where we can gather as friends to share a meal together and socialize each day. As the colder weather approaches, I encourage you to stop by and get involved at our Center to keep yourself active and social through the winter months. Those months can feel so long for some! We look forward to meeting you or seeing you again if it has been a while since your last visit.

Let’s make it a great November!

Special Person of the Month Janet Bieri

Janet Bieri was born in Cicero, Illinois. She grew up in Chicago, Illinois with three brothers and three sisters who were much older than her. As she grew up, Jan enjoyed playing piano, roller skating, swimming, singing in groups and bicycle riding. Jan met her husband at Hope College and they have three children, ten grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and two

step-great grandchildren. Jan worked at Sunbeam and Zenith Corporations in Chicago area, at Attwood in Lowell for 13 years, as a substitute teacher in Lowell for 10 years, and taught full time for two years. One thing that Jan has always wanted to do and has not is to travel to Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. Jan’s hobbies include playing cards, swimming, playing piano, riding her bike, traveling, reading, and most of all helping people. If she could go back to any age it would be 50 because she still had her husband alive to travel and do things with and she still really misses him a lot. Jan really enjoys being a parent/grandparent and says the best part of this is having love to give and to have love returned as well. The proudest moment in her life is when she married her husband Art Bieri. Jan’s best piece of advice for living is to love God and to live for Him! We appreciate Jan and her willingness to lead our Bible Study each Wednesday at the Center. Everyone enjoys her Bible Study and we are glad that she is a part of our Center!

Another southern belle graced our world on December 23, 1921. A Christmas gift,

Mable Beatrice Boe was born to Edwin and Ellen Boe at their home in Irvington,

Alabama, near Mobile. Mable was the firstborn of three children.

Mable, better known as Bea, lived on a farm. Her father worked on the farm with his

brother and father, as they raised beef cattle and oranges. The family also had racing

horses that pulled sulkies. Bea remembers climbing up into a buggy with her father to

go to town. In 1926 the family moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where extended family was residing.

Bea’s father started his apprenticeship to become a journeyman plumber. He eventually opened his own

plumbing business.

Bea was active with volleyball, archery and bird watching. In 1940 Bea graduated from Union High School

in Grand Rapids. She then attended Grand Rapids Junior College for two years until her father became ill

with cancer. In 1942 she started working as a bill estimator for Consumers Power Company. Soon after

beginning this position, she and her girlfriends from the power company vacationed at a cottage in Grand

Haven over Memorial weekend. It was at the cottage that Bea was introduced to her friend’s boyfriend’s

brother John VanHoutum.

When Bea returned from vacation to the power company, she heard someone whistling from the street down

below her desk window. It was John and she waved enthusiastically from the window to get his attention.

John was working with his father and his brother at their Folgers (Orange Crush) Bottling Company

delivering beverages next door to the power company. A few days later, Bea received a call from John who

officially asked her out on their first date to Ramona Park, an amusement park in Grand Rapids where his

company set up a beverage booth.

On November 20, 1943 Bea married John at an estate called the Country House in Forest Hills, Michigan.

Two months later, Bea’s father lost his battle to cancer. Bea would deliver her first child, a daughter Marilyn

in 1949 and her son Craig was born in 1953. Later that year, the family moved from the city to Sparta,

Michigan where John would work with his brother at Sparta Lumber Company.

In 1979 Bea and John moved to Alabama to be near the ocean. John had a skin condition that benefited from

the salt water. Bea, a seamstress, operated a specialty clothing store with her neighbor. In 1985 John was

diagnosed with throat cancer and passed away in 1990. Bea missed Michigan and decided to move back in

1993 to be near her children. Bea’s mother passed away in 1995 at age 94 years old.

In 2015 Bea decided to sell her Sparta home and take up residency at Harvest Way Retirement Community in

Sparta. Bea is a joy to be around. She enjoys games and especially playing cards. She says that she likes

living at Harvest Way and everyone has been very friendly. Bea has been witness to much advancement over

the years. She recognizes the wonderful life she has been given. I am truly thankful for Bea, a great lady.
