The Seneca Nation’s Food Is Our Medicine Project recently participated in a region-wide Farmers Market event. On August 5th, children attending classes of the Early Childhood Learning Centers at the Seneca Nation’s Allegany and Cattaraugus Territories were treated to a reading of Who Grew My Soup?, a whimsical tale of a young boy who refuses to eat until he knows the origin of the vegetables in the soup he’s served for lunch. Beyond the whimsy, however, the book provides an important lesson for young children about the sources of the food they eat.

Readings took place simultaneously outside the Cattaraugus Territory’s William Seneca Building during the Seneca Nation Farmers Market and at Jefferson Park during the Salamanca Farmers Market. Seneca Nation Chief of Staff Maurice John was reader at Cattaraugus and Cindy Mohr, a retired teacher and Seneca member, read in Salamanca. The event was part of the 15th annual National Farmers Market Week, held yearly during the first full week of August. Participating children received veggie t-shirts and “Veggie Bucks” vouchers to use at either Farmers Market. In keeping with the theme of the book, youngsters were encouraged to buy fresh produce with their Veggie Bucks. Seneca Nation Farmers Market Manager Jodi Oakes said that the event was a great success and estimated that over 200 children took part, along with teachers, staff, parents and other adults.

The Farmers Market at the Seneca Nation has been in existence since February of 2013 at the Seneca Nation’s Cattaraugus Territory. Market vendors sell fresh produce, organically raised hormone-free meats, dairy products, traditional herbs and spices, and other food items. The Farmers Market is unique among New York State markets in that its focus is on healthy choices in foods,

with emphasis on organic meats and fresh fruit and vegetables.

The Farmers Market is an initiative of Food Is Our Medicine (FIOM), an agricultural collaboration of the Seneca Nation and the Seneca Diabetes Foundation. FIOM’s goal is to restore the health and wellbeing of the Seneca Community by restoring culturally significant Native plant usage and re-establishing a culturally-informed food system. FIOM projects and events provide Sexneca members with the skills and motivation to grow their own

fresh vegetables and, thus, lead a healthier lifestyle. The Farmers Market is continuing FIOM’s goal by providing access to fresh food at a reasonable price.

Activities such as the August 5th reading event underscore FIOM’s special commitment to the children of the Seneca Nation. By investing in the Nation’s children, FIOM hopes to instill in the youngest Seneca members an understanding of – and a commitment to – a lifetime of good health through healthy eating.

MARKET VENDORS SELL FRESH PRODUCE, ORGANICALLY RAISED HORMONE-FREE MEATS, DAIRY PRODUCTS, TRADITIONAL HERBS AND SPICES, AND OTHER FOOD ITEMS.

For 50 plus years, Barry E. Snyder, Sr. has been a progressive leader of the Seneca Na-tion having served five terms as president of the largest of the Iroquois Confederacy of Indian Nations. Guided by Snyder’s leadership and determination, the Seneca Nation has grown to be one of the most economically successful and politically influential in Indian Country. Growing up with the realities on a rural Indian reservation and graduating from the Thomas Indian School, Snyder was keenly aware of the disparities of life between the Seneca territories and that of its adjoining municipalities. A man of his people, the “People of the Great Hill” as the Senecas are historically known, Snyder learned at an early age a strong sense of family and commitment to the traditions and culture of the Seneca Nation. This self-determination empowered him to live his life by the pillars of the Great Law – Peace, Equity, Justice and a Good Mind - placing the welfare of his people before his own. Time and time again Snyder’s diplomatic leadership has yielded substantial, favorable outcomes for the Seneca people. Having the vision and wisdom to pursue the interpret-ation of the Buffalo Creek Treaty and the positive impacts it would have through the sale of tobacco products and petroleum, Snyder created the beginnings of the Nation’s sovereign economy. Whether it has been the first-time creation of high-stakes bingo on Nation lands in the 1970s, pursuing programs promoting economic self-sufficiency or directing efforts through the Nation’s treasury that generated significant capital investment for family-owned homes throughout the territories, Snyder has been in the forefront of the Na-tion’s progressive development programs and legislative policies. Through the Salamanca Settlement Act in 1990, then President Snyder played an important part in creating investment programs that have guided wisely the settlement monies received by the Nation. Once received in 1993, these monies were invested and remain today in protected investments within the Nation’s financial holdings. These monies are regarded as the “Golden Dollars” as the settlement proved to be a great benefit to the Seneca people. It is this type of careful planning, astute financial analysis, and deft handling of com-plex matters that has enabled Snyder to develop his own private sector entrepreneurial success. And it is that very success that has encouraged others in shaping successful businesses on the Seneca Territory. Snyder has always been in the forefront and is re-garded as being the “Trail Blazer” in business development in the Territories. And it is that very success that has shaped Snyder’s careful and deliberate planning for the many Nation-sponsored programs that have benefited in the past and continue to benefit to-day all members of the Nation. Today Snyder has brought the Nation into the 21st Century; poised to move suc-cessfully into the future for the next seven generations. He concludes his fifth term as president, his legacy, this November with a sense of pride and accomplishment. He quietly reflected that the Nation is just scratching the surface. “There are bountiful opportunities ahead for our people.”

Page 15: Seneca Today Fall 2014

SENECACASINOS.COM | TODAYMAGAZINE.CA 15

IN the fall of 2013, the Seneca Nation of Indians unani-mously approved a Native Plant Policy ensuring that new landscape planting in public spaces on Seneca lands

will be exclusively comprised of local indigenous species. It has long been recognized that continued planting of non-native spe-cies poses a significant threat to ecosystems and causes harm to the environment. The current Seneca Nation Council is committed to restoring, preserving, and maintaining local indigenous plants that are significant to the culture of the Seneca people and that help to maintain the balance of nature. Although the new policy applies exclusively to plants in public spaces, owners of private property at the Seneca Nation are encouraged to reintroduce Native species and to remove invasive and introduced Eurasian plants. To guide plant-ing decisions at the Seneca Nation, a Recommended No Planting List, along with lists of Native Plants of Allegany, Cattaraugus, and Chautauqua Counties, has been formulated.

No other U.S. Native Tribe has established and formally enacted an indigenous plant policy. In doing so, the Seneca Nation has dem-onstrated its commitment to continuing and expanding efforts to reintroduce native species to Seneca territories. The Seneca Nation and its planting policy can serve as a model for other Native Nations as they work to reintroduce the species that have, for so long, played a secondary role in the life and health of many indigenous peoples. With this planting policy, the Seneca Nation has taken a substantial step forward in preserving its culture and protecting and maintaining the Seneca Community’s ecological footprint.

This policy has been applauded by Dr. Jeremy Pinto, Research Plant Physiologist and Tribal Nursery Specialist with the Forest Service of the US Department of Agriculture, who has stated: “While it should be well-ingrained in us to preserve and promote the plants that are significant to our respective cultures, a policy like this brings the issues of cultural preservation, invasive species, sustainability, and adaptabil-ity to the forefront of everyday management practices in a good way.” Media sources that have featured information on the Native Plant Policy include ABC News, Fox Business News, The San Diego Union Tribune, the Native Nations Institute at the University of Arizona, and the Indian Country Today Media Network. Dissemination of

information about the Native Plant Policy will provide other Native Nations, as well as non-Native communities, with information and motivation to establish their own indigenous planting policy.

The new planting policy puts an official stamp on the Seneca Nation’s ongoing efforts to reintroduce native species to Seneca territories. To implement the Native Plant Policy, the Seneca Nation has established the position of Groundskeeper. Two Groundskeepers will be respon-sible for all planting and maintenance duties at the Allegany and Cattaraugus Territories. Each will coordinate a program to beautify the entrances to all public buildings at the territories.

Three recent planting projects have put the new policy into action. The area surrounding the William Seneca Administration Building at the Cattaraugus Territory has been redesigned to reflect the history of the Seneca Nation. It has become a living narrative of Seneca culture, a demonstration of the intimate connection to the land that has been a source of identity and pride for Seneca people since time immemorial. All Eurasian species have been removed, 446 native trees and shrubs have been planted, and a minimum of 25 different native species have been re-introduced to the landscape. The species that have been included are those that historically supplied the Seneca people with food, medicine, fiber, dyes, tools, and plants used for ceremonies. At the Cattaraugus Territory’s Community Center, Norway Maples are being removed and replaced with Native Sugar Maples, 15 raised beds have been introduced, and canning and youth gardens have been established.

Perhaps the most visible evidence of the Native Plant Policy for the general public has been the plantings within the traffic circle at the intersection of Routes 5 and 20. The newly constructed circle, which directs the flow of traffic for these two heavily traveled roads, now boasts native trees and grasses, including Switch Grass, and wild-flowers such as Black-Eyed Susan. Similar plantings can also be seen at the nearby corners. The project was a partnership of the Seneca Nation and the New York State Department of Transportation.

The Native Plant Policy has focused attention – and action – on issues of ecology and Seneca history. It will serve as a guide for Seneca Nation planting choices, as well as a touchstone for other Native Nations wishing to incorporate culturally-informed decisions into their own planting policies.

In 1956, the Seneca Nation of Indians, realizing that the dam would inundate 10,000 acres of valuable river-bottom lands on the Allegany Reservation, initiated action to stop construction by carrying the issue to the United States Supreme Court. In 1959, the Supreme Court upheld the power of Congress to condemn the land required for the project. Following this decision, appeals against the construction of the dam were directed to the public, the Congress, and President John F. Kennedy.

The Presidential letter of August 9, 1961, addressed to Mr. Basil Williams, then President of the Seneca Nation, stated that the Kinzua Project would continue to take every action within their authority to assist the Seneca Nation and its members who had to be relocated in adjusting to the situation.

The Seneca Nation, through various committees, began the process of preparing for the relocation and resettlement of 130 families living within the taking area. The area was to be cleared by October 1, 1964.

Now, twenty years later, it is fitting and proper that this moment in Seneca history be remembered and observed. Remember the Removal day was officially proclaimed on September 29, `1984, and was done in remembrance of those Seneca who relinquished their lands, their homes, and way of life. Every year sees ceremonies and activities take place on the last Saturday of September, to remind people that Seneca Nation will never forget the events that happened in 1964, when the Kinzua Dam was constructed.

An impeccable dining experience awaits you at The Western Door, with special touches such as: a minimum of two servers per table; foods brought out on a cart; chefs and servers that will gladly de-tail a lobster or cut the meat off the bone, and; a friendly and experienced team that quickly gets to know guests by name as well as their favorite preferences. Favorite food items for guests at The Western Door at Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino go beyond the mouth-watering steaks. Special entrées and desserts of the day, such as crème brûlée, keep regulars coming back to try new chef-inspired creations. Breads, butters, and desserts are made fresh daily in house. Fresh seafood – such as oysters, crab legs, lobster, and clams – is available every night. And the free-range chicken breast is con-sidered by many to be the best-tasting chicken any casino has to offer. The 146-seat restaurant provides a variety of seating options that can accommodate different occasions – everything from a table next to the fire-place, to seating near a window with mountain views, to a comfy booth in the middle of the room, to a counter seat near the open kitchen for inter-action with the chefs. Additionally, a private room in the back with doors can seat up to 24 people.

One of the most romantic places for dinner at Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino is its signature steakhouse, The Western Door. Between the extensive wine list, elegant décor and dark wood, and live piano playing on Saturday night that sometimes leads to impromptu slow dancing byguests, there are many factors that make the restaurant perfect for a lovely evening.

The Western Door is known as the region’s premier steakhouse, and was voted “Best Steakhouse” by Buffalo Spree magazine. It’s the only restaurant in Western New York to offer specially-selected cuts that exceed USDA standards for Prime and Choice beef, with generous portions that are aged for a minimum of 28 days for added flavor and tenderness.

Some of the Western Door’s most flavorful items include filet mignon, surf and turf, clams casino, smoking shrimp tree, and chilled seafood deluxe – which includes chilled lobster tails, shrimp, oysters, clams, and Alaskan king crab. Everything is made fresh daily from scratch recipes, and desserts and breads are baked in-house.

The approach to service sets the Western Door apart: a team of servers will deliver your food from a special cart rather than trays. And, for as elegant as The Western Door can be, it also can be a lively place – especially around the bar with the legendary master bartender, Frank Ryan.

Great service. Premium quality. Incomparable variety. Put all the ingredients together, and you’ve got a recipe for flavorful success at The Western Door.

All dishes are made from scratch, and the culinary team painstakingly searches for the very best products to use in the kitchen, such as San Marzano tomatoes for sauces and daily-made soups. They also make it a point to only use recipes from different regions of Italy. La Cascata’s main dishes include a variety of pastas, steaks, and seafood. Some of the choices include lobster ravioli, veal chop parmigiana, an 18-ounce bone-in rib eye, a 20-ounce pork porterhouse, and stuffed chicken breast with prosciutto, sundried tomato, fresh herbs, and garlic cream sauce. More than 120 labels of wines from around the world are available, and qualified wine experts can help guests choose the perfect bottle or glass for dinner.

La Cascata roughly translates to “waterfall” or “cascade” – a fitting name, given its close proximity to the nearby world-famous Niagara Falls. Inside the restaurant, rich, dark wood paneling provides accents to the bright yellow walls, jade-encrusted lighting fixtures, and blue wavy tiles amongst stately tables with pressed tablecloths. Nearby at the front of the restaurant is a fireplace and dimly-lit circular booths, including a separate oversized booth that easily seats more than a dozen guests and overlooks the master wine displays. In addition, a back ov-al-shaped room with enclosed doors seats up to 32 guests and can double as a space for private parties, office meetings, and special celebrations upon request.

Buffalo is the birthplace of the chicken wing, which is now famous worldwide. Beef-on-weck, which features thinly sliced roast beef with au jus on a salted kummelweck roll, is another regional staple.

Unique desserts pay tribute to ethnic heritage, particularly the area’s large Polish-American population. These favorites and more – made directly by the local experts – are yours to mix and match at Buffalo Savors Grill.

Grab food to go, or have a seat in the cushioned booths as you overlook the gaming floor action. You can even enjoy one of 10 tabletop video poker units as you dine. Some of the menu items include: beef-on-weck sandwiches from Charlie the Butcher; Italian sandwiches with Ilio DiPaolo’s family-recipe sauces; pizza from Franco’s Pizza; desserts from Chrusciki Bakery, and;artisan-crafted gelato from Sweet Melody’s.

And be sure to try chicken wings from Duff ’s Famous Wings; recent recipient of three First Place Awards in in the Restaurant Sauce Off Competition at this year’s National Chicken WingFestival. Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino, a co-sponsor of the festival, represented Duff ’s Famous wings, and made a clean sweep of the traditional sauce categories beating out more than two dozen local and national restaurants.

You won’t find any place like Buffalo Savors Grill in Western New York, except at Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino. Enjoy the region’s best foods, all in one location.

AS WE CELEBRATE THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF BUFFALO’S MOST FAMOUS AND BELOVED CULTURAL EXPORT, it behooves us to look back at how it all started. One of America’s classic side

dishes, bar foods and big game staples was the result of a mother’s inspired

brainstorming in the kitchen of a Main Street restaurant.

It was a typical Friday night in 1964 for Teressa Bellissimo. She was nearing the

end of her shift at Th e Anchor Bar, the restaurant she co-owned. Her son Dominic

was tending bar. But when a group of Dominic’s friends piled into the joint around

closing time, bemoaning their empty stomachs, Teressa was presented with a

problem. Nothing remaining in the kitchen could be prepared quickly.

Instead of giving up, Bellissimo got creative. She grabbed the wing-shaped parts of

chicken that she usually used for soup stock, tossed them in the fryer, and coated

them in hot sauce. Th ose hungry pals of Dominic’s became the very fi rst people on

Earth to enjoy Buff alo wings.

Where others would have seen an empty kitchen, Teressa

Bellissimo saw an opportunity. Th rough a combination of

Wright On! Frank Lloyd Wright’s Buffalo Legacy

BUFFALO ISN’T JUST A CITY OF MUSEUMS. The city itself is a museum. A haven for the

brightest and boldest architectural minds of the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Queen City is a preservation-minded place. We protect our breathtaking structures like they’re the last Italian sausage at a Bills game tailgate.

That spirit of preservation explains the wealth of Frank Lloyd Wright treasures you’ll find in our neighborhoods. When Buffalo executive Darwin D. Martin needed an architect for the new office building of his employer, the Larkin Soap Company, he hit the jackpot when he landed 36-year-old Wright. Buffalo’s landscape would never look the same. Wright designed a stunning office building for Martin – the

Larkin Administration Building, sadly demolished in 1950 – but he didn’t stop there. Buffalo is full of Wright-designed structures, including the Darwin Martin House (a triumph of Wright’s Prairie style) in North Buffalo, the Blue Sky Mausoleum at Forest Lawn Cemetery, the lakeside Graycliff home where the Martins spent their summers, and the Fontana Boathouse. Few places have as many beautifully preserved examples of Wright operating at the top of his game.

And in 2014, a filling station first designed by Wright in 1927 but never realized will finally come to fruition at the Buffalo Transportation Pierce-Arrow Museum.

Amazingly, that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Buffalo’s architecture scene.
