Objectives

• To provide updates on the revision MS 930 to those

does involved in hydrocarbon gas related system

installation, particularly on low and medium pressure of

reticulation system (Natural Gas and Liquefied

Petroleum Gas) for domestic, commercial and industrial

sectors.

Target Groups

• Gas Company Engineer / Directors

• Managers/Supervisor/Technicians/Site Supervisor

• Gas Competent Persons and individuals who involved in

gas system and industry

• Consulting Engineers

• Government and State Engineers

The Department of Standards Malaysia, a government

agency under the Ministry of Science, Technology and

Innovation (MOSTI) has established the Working Group on

Low Pressure Pipeline Transportation.

Malaysia has about 84 trillion standard cubic feet of gas

reserves, placing the country world’s 14th largest

hydrocarbon gas reserve. Hydrocarbon gas transported via

pipelines and cylinder is a flammable gas. If released and

ignited it will cause mass explosion and disaster to the

surrounding property, community and environment, disrupt

the continuous supply and pose a bad reputation to gas

supplier and nation. Hence, safety of the hydrocarbon gas

pipelines and cylinders must be managed effectively to

minimise the possibilities of incidents and to be prepared in

the event of an incident. Because hydrocarbon gas is the

cleanest burning fossil fuel, it is playing an increasing role in

helping to attain national goals of a cleaner environment,

energy security and a more competitive economy.

Looking at the present increasing usage of natural gas in

Malaysia and gazette of the amended of Gas Supply Act, it is

best that the prevention or proactive measures are

implemented effectively at optimum level to prevent any

undesired consequences from occurring. Even though gas

industry in Malaysia is relatively new but it is reported that

over the last decade, the deaths and injuries for natural gas

piping and liquefied petroleum gas system is occurs.

This is due to many reasons such as improper installation,

wrong design, bad maintenances, etc. In line to that

Standards Malaysia has made a right move to make a

second review on the Malaysian Standard 930 (Installation of

fuel gas piping systems and appliances - Code of practice

(Second revision). The second revision has more cleared and

specific guidelines.

Major modifications in this revision are as follows:

a) All pressure units are given in gauge condition

(psig), unless otherwise specified

b) Schematic diagram of natural gas pipeline and

liquefied petroleum gas systems have been

amended to reflect current practice;

c) The allowable pressure drop has been

specified at the maximum allowable level

d) The pipe sizing tables have been developed based

on the right properties and maximum flow velocity

e) Requirements on clearance with electrical

services and other services, cover for

underground piping beyond boundary line

of private land, pipe marker, backfilling,

distance for above ground piping, identification of

piping, above ceiling locations, prohibited

locations, installation at non fire-fighting and non-

protected lift lobby and gas riser compartment with

accessories have been included

f) Requirements on protection against freezing have

been deleted

g) Requirements on purging have been amended

Who are we?

Governed by the Standards of Malaysia Act 1996 (Act 549), the Department of Standards

Malaysia (Standards Malaysia) is an agency established on 28 August 1996 under the purview

of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI). Standards Malaysia is the

National Standards and Accreditation Body of Malaysia providing confidence to various

stakeholders, through credible standardisation and accreditation services for global

competitiveness. Our aspiration is to create a culture of quality amongst Malaysians, to make

standards an accepted component of businesses locally and to achieve global recognition for

our products and services; thus improving the overall quality of life. As the National Standards

Body, Standards Malaysia is entrusted to develop national standards (Malaysian Standards –

MS). Standards Malaysia has appointed six Standards Development Agencies (SDAs) to

manage the development of MS and coordinate Malaysia’s participation at internationalstandardisation activities, i.e. ISO and IEC. The SDAs are:

SIRIM Berhad

Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB)

Institut Kimia Malaysia (IKM)

Malaysian Association of Standards Users (Standards Users)

Malaysian Plastics Manufacturers Association (MPMA)

Malaysian Rubber Board (Lembaga Getah Malaysia, LGM)

Where to get MS, ISO and IEC standards?

For more than 20 years, we have successfully developed more than 6,000 MS and actively

participated in ISO and IEC standards development activities. This has contributed to

Malaysia’s competitive edge by facilitating trade through international recognition of our

products and services that complied with MS or international standards. The MS can bepurchased online through www.msonline.gov.my.
