Self Portrait
Introduction• Think about the expression, posture,
clothing, background, colours and style of the following pictures.
• Why do you think the artist chose to represent themselves like this?
Expression.• Smiling: Happy, confident etc• Frowning: Sad, depressed etc
Background• Things the artist is interested in.
Style• Realistic: Can see their expressions/
feeling clearly.• Unrealistic: Confused about their
personality?
Colours• Light colours: Happy?• Dark colours: Sad?• Contrasting colours: Confused? An-
gry?
• His expression is fo-cused and he is not smiling. He has no clothes on and his face looks very old/wrinkled. The colours are dark and shad-owy. All these things suggest he has lived through lots of hard times.
Activity Two• Draw a self portrait that represents
you.• Think about the, posture, clothing,
background and style of your portrait and how it represents you.
• Write a paragraph explaining how the portrait represents you.
Activity Three• I will put all the portraits on the wall.• Walk around and try to guess who
drew each self portrait.• Each group should choose a portrait
and write a few sentences about its expression, posture, clothing, back-ground, colours and style.
