In the News

The F.W. Webb Company is now a master supply distributor for Armstrong International products in the Northeast. Webb now has Armstrong steam, condensate, hot water and heat transfer products in inventory and ready for customers throughout the six New England states, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

“This new distribution agreement gives F.W. Webb the ability to provide customers in the Northeast a greater depth and breadth of both steam products and expertise. It further enhances our position as the steam system experts in the region,” said Jeff Pope, president of F.W. Webb. “Customers who rely on steam technology for their hospitals, manufacturing plants, campuses, and similar facilities will find effective, industry-best solutions from F.W. Webb, including operational cost and energy savings."

Propane fuel, also known as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), is a clean-burning, high-energy and lower-cost alternative fuel. It is increasingly in use as propane autogas to power fleets of vehicles, such as buses and delivery trucks. F.W. Webb recently sourced and supplied its first propane autogas filling station for longstanding customer, Columbus Energies. Featuring a pristine 2,900-gallon tank and a high-tech pump, the facility is up and running in East Providence, RI for the fuel requirements of a fleet of 35 brand-new propane-powered school buses. The propane autogas tank and pump were purchased through the F.W. Webb location in Warwick, RI. Interested customers throughout the Northeast can contact the F.W. Ashcroft® instrumentation products have joined the U.S. Navy aboard the newest and most technologically advanced submarine, the USS John Warner. Two products—a Weksler® pressure gauge and an Ashcroft® gas-actuated thermometer—are installed and operational in the recently-commissioned submarine to help the 135-man crew on their mission through the world’s major waterways. An authorized distributor of Ashcroft, F.W. Webb supplies products to General Dynamics for similar projects at its shipyards in Groton, CT and Bath, ME.

F.W. Webb congratulates, and was a proud sponsor of, Team Grodsky from Harry Grodsky & Co., which completed the annual Pan Mass Challenge bike-athon in early August. The team of 20 riders cycled 190 miles over two days to raise money for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Jimmy Fund. In business for almost a century, Harry Grodsky & Co. provides mechanical contracting, engineering, service and maintenance to clients throughout the Northeast.

Tim Vandenburgh has been promoted to Regional Manager of NY, NJ and PA. All General Managers in F.W. Webb locations throughout these three states are now reporting to him. Tim was most recently the General Manager of the F.W. Webb Bergen Division in Elmwood Park, NJ.

Joe Jauss is the new F.W. Webb Market Manager for Power and Energy. Joe is bringing products, solutions and expertise to Power and Energy professionals throughout the Northeast, including steam systems, valves and controls, and balance of plant equipment. Joe has 35+ years of experience in sales and management in Power Generation, Utilities, and Industrial Manufacturing. Todd Hodges is a new Inside Sales Representative for the F. W. Webb Process Controls Division. He has extensive experience in solids measurement, brix measurement, density measurement, flow measurement, and on-line sensors and controls. Todd was the owner and CEO of RL Instruments, which specialized in process measurement instrumentation for the food/

beverage, pulp/paper, chemical, plastics, medical, pharmaceutical and bio-pharmaceutical industries. Prior to owning RL Instruments, Todd was a Sales and Marketing Manager for Liquid Solid Control. The SNAP program evaluates and approve new alternative refrigerants. Recently it was used to de-authorize certain high global warming refrigerants.

For example on Jan 1, 2017, R-404A (HP-62), R-507 (AZ-50) & other lesser known refrigerants will no longer be able to be used for new supermarket installations. (July 20, 2016 for retrofits) The refrigerants will still be available for existing racks and systems. Other applications have different dates.

Proposed Section 608 Rule ChangesSection 608 of the Clean Air Act refers to refrigerant handling & usage. The EPA is in the process of updating the 1990’s era rules. Here are a few of the expected changes:

• HFC refrigerants will now be included• Leak rate triggers will be lowered • Periodic system leak inspections modeled on the California rule

(>50 pounds) • Consideration for use of leak detection systems• Electronic records will be acceptable• Potential maximum annual leak rate

New Refrigerants and TrendsThere are many new refrigerants being introduced and marketed. Some say that they can utilize the old mineral oils. Some say that they save energy and are true drop-ins. What is the truth? Here are some quick thoughts:• Oil changes are recommended for systems with receiver or

accumulators (racks, etc.) • R-407A is the most common and (currently) least expensive

alternative for R-22 in refrigeration • New lower GWP blends recently received EPA Snap approval• Partner with competent contractors that have modern leak

It is also convenient that the saw is adjustable and able to cut through various sizes of pipe. To meet a tight deadline, William F. Lynch Co., Inc. recommended Parker Hannifin’s Transair aluminum piping over copper piping, saving installation time, labor, and material costs. By using Transair, Lynch was able to install twice the piping specified in the initial design and still finish the job on time.

Quick Turnaround

With Parker’s extensive distributor network, the project’s supplier, F. W. Webb of Boston, was able to get Lynch materials quickly, sometimes with a one-day turnaround.

“Timing was everything for them,” said F. W. Webb Inside Sales Representative Mike Costa. “Webb has a good reputation of going out of our way to keep a customer happy. We paid the extra freight charges and did what we could do to get materials out to Lynch when they needed them.”

F. W. Webb pulled from nearby distribution centers that keep a large quantity of material in stock, helping the company meet same-day orders, Costa said. Webb’s intercompany trucking services helped get materials from one place to another quickly, sometimes with two orders in one day. “That’s a value-added thing for Webb that a lot of companies don’t do,” Costa pointed out.

The project was completed in October 2014, meeting the deadline. From planning to completion, the entire project took nine months, with design work continuing through part of the build-out.

“Transair was very helpful in walking us through their product and getting things off on the right foot,” said Mac Lynch, President of the Lynch Co. “As contractors, we don’t like surprises. For this project, Transair’s support eliminated surprises, making us and the owner very happy.”

Parker Hannifin’s Transair aluminum piping was so easy to install that Lynch was able to install twice as much as the initial design called for and still meet the project's six-month deadline.

Unlike traditional copper piping, Transair does not require any brazing or purge gases, eliminating the need for that added labor expense. “One man can install most of the pipe alone, and the fittings save quite a bit of labor,” said Mac Lynch.

This system was developed for a bottling plant to (1) disinfect components used as liquids are being added to bottles during packaging, and (2) keep the bottle line running smoothly in the line lubrication process. Components include an LMI Chemical metering pump that is proportionally flow paced by a water flow meter. A flow monitor on the metering pump senses if the pump stops adding disinfectant and activates a light and sound alarm as needed.
