WASHINGTON SERVICE CORPS
SERVE TODAY FOR A BETTER TOMORROW.
SELECTING YOUR WSC/WRC
AMERICORPS MEMBER
Selecting The Right
Member• Selecting a Washington Service Corps
(WSC) or Washington Reading Corps
(WRC) member who has a commitment
to service and understands and
supports both the AmeriCorps and your
site’s mission can result in having a
great member that does a lot of good for
your community.
• Selecting a WSC/WRC member who
does not understand the requirements
of AmeriCorps or fit well with your
service sites mission, can result in
misconduct issues, unfilled goals for
your organization and members who
leave positions early.
• As member placement fees are not
refundable sites also lose money and
time addressing misconduct.
• This training will help provide you the
tools you need to hire strong, successful
members for your site.
5 Steps of the Selection Process
1. Partner with Your HR Department if Possible
- Working with a professional can save your organization time and money an unsuccessful member can cost you.
- But either way, this training will help provide a solid foundation to successfully navigate selecting a member.
2. Screen Applications/Create Applicant Pool
- WSC does minimal screening. It is up to you.
- Refer to our Member Applications - 3 Common Red Flags Handout while you screen applications.
3. Ask Pertinent Interview Questions and Call References
-Please ask the questions on the Required Interview Question Form and Required Reference Question Form in addition to any questions you and your HR department require. Speak directly to references, who are not family members.
4. Inform Applicant What AmeriCorps Service is Like
- During the interview, in addition to explaining what service is like, hand out the Requirements and Benefits of Service Form/Questions to Consider Asking During Your AmeriCorps Interview. After the interview, email the AmeriCorps Candidate Readiness Checklist to applicants you are interested in selecting.
-Arrange your applicant to shadow and ask questions of a current member, if you have one. It not, take them on a tour of your organization and have them ask questions of employees, so they have a good understanding of your organization. Many members leave at the beginning of their service term, if they do not have a clear idea what their service entails.
5. Select Your Member if they appear to be a good fit. If in doubt, continue to interview.
- Electronic enrollment paperwork for your selected members will be available on our website by mid-June.
