• BBC television broadcasts a number of programmes across the day starting with BBC Breakfast in the morning

• There are further bulletins at 1pm, 6pm and 10pm• BBC 1 broadcasts The One Show at 7pm – current affairs

programme with an entertainment remit• Newsnight – late in the evening (usually 10.30) on BBC 2 –

more detailed analysis of the day’s events• Politics Today and The Andrew Marr Show (9 am Sunday

BBC1) also offer debate and analysis on the events that have been part of the news cycle

• BBC4 has a regular 30 minute World News Today T 7.30 PM• BBC News Channel – rolling news programme; constantly

updated; uses ticker. 24 hour service on Freeview• CBBC broadcasts Newsround, child-friendly, largely soft news

at various points during the day (7.40 – 7.45; 8.15 – 8.25; 4.20 – 4.30)

BBC News at Ten (BBC 1)

• Main BBC news programme; broadcast weeknights on BBC 1

• Audience – mass mainstream• Content – hard news, soft news, human interest

stories and sport but most of the 30 minutes focuses on hard news.

• Broadcast after the watershed so able to present harsh disturbing images

• Dominated by moving images often fronted by a BBC correspondent at the scene

BBC News at Ten (BBC 1)

• Focus is usually personal and human interest aspects are highlighted

• Voice is given to victims and eyewitnesses, showing the impact of events on regular people

• Presenters sit and speak in front of a screen that will feature still images and animations to illustrate the stories

• Main story may be presented from more than one viewpoint with a secondary report giving more analysis and background to the story with a focus on authority figures involved

• Main story will often end with expert analysis provided by a BBC journalist. Main stories can take up to ten minutes –exceptional stories (9/11, for example) can take longer…

• Other stories may include national stories regarding crime, politics, economics or other hard news stories as well as international stories

• Often focus on the personal impact of events and are presented in an emotive way

• Twitter and other social networking are often used to support this more personal approach to stories

• News at Ten ends by giving time to regional newsrooms to broadcast their headlines

BBC Breakfast – BBC 1

• 6 – 9 am • Works on a cycle of news that can be seen in 30

minute chunks The half hour segment often ends with a video report, a location broadcast or studio interview/discussion and is followed by a regional news bulletin

• On the hour and half hour for 20 minutes, the main news items of the day are reported

• More human interest/soft news stories are integrated into the broadcast – possibly to retain viewers for the rest of the morning’s programmes

BBC News at Six – BBC 1

• 30 minute bulletin weeknights

• Slightly less formal than 10 pm broadcast

• Presenter stands in front of the desk rather than sits

• News selection and running order pretty much the same as 10 pm broadcast but less time is spent on the main story of the day – the more analytical reporting is omitted

• More time is given to soft news and sports

• Headlines are reported throughout the programme

Newsnight BBC 2

• Weeknight BBC news and analysis• Summarises news agenda of the day and uses interviews

features to offer a more detailed analysis rather than just report events

• Presenters like Evan Davie can take an adversarial approach • The show was criticised for its role in hushing up accusations

of abuse against Jimmy Savile

Newsround - CBBC

• Specifically targets children over seven

• Bulletins throughout the day and integrates national and international news stories with items specifically selected to appeal to young people

• Hard news stories are presented in a way that is sensitive in case any distress is caused

• Special reports are used to provide more context/detail

• Summary of recent events at Commonwealth Games focusing on UK success and an interview with Usain Bolt – item ended with input from audience members

• Background information about the forthcoming commemoration of the start of World War 1 with a focus on the role of dogs, pigeons, elephants and glow worms in the war

• A report on an owl café

• A report on fist-bumping – more hygienic than shaking hands – audience members sent in their videos to be broadcast
